All the King’s horses and all the King’s men

Deriving from the RHYME: All the King’s horses and all the King’s men

I decided to chose this RHYME: All the King’s horses and all the King’s men specifically as it gives me the power of strength and power of full details… I DECIDED TO GO AROUND THIS RHYME WITH DIFFERENT COMPOSITION.

This concept showcases the transition of the Western and Asian culture. What if Humpty Dumpty was converted into Chinese context? I ask myself this question as a starting ground for this project. I don’t really have a specific theme that i want to portray to my concept ,as a whole I want to portray a story about the power and intricacy of the Chinese culture without missing the western culture in it. The use of balance, contrast, composition, rhythm,… which the hand out Professor Ina gave us, I played with the different format, giving all my layout a different feel, look and also different intricacy surrounding it.

“Haute Couture”, I love the way they composite the fine details in the fashion world, so in the details of all the composition, I took into consideration for my planning, dressing each composition differently, giving it a luxury feel towards the end.

*All my works are THRESHOLD as I was so obsessed with the MONOPRINTING technique, making my work very hands on**

This marks the end of Assignment 2. It was a learning experience for me. Composition, balance, contrast… it gave me an idea on playing around with shapes and moving images around to create a composition that tells a story. I enjoy this assignment as a whole, giving me the opportunity to go all out with details and also showcasing my personality in the technique i use. YAY to the end of the project. ALL KING’S HORSES AND ALL KING’S MEN MADE IT TO THE END

Process Post 1

The overdue post for assignment 2 RHYMES is up.

Design is a discipline shaped by a varied and eclectic set of influences from both the past and present. Art has always influenced design. Exploring the western and asian art in different ways, creates a contrasting complex to the design.

The RHYME that i decided to go for:

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the king’s horses and all the king’s men
Couldn’t put Humpty together again.

Narrowing down, All the king’s horses and all the king’s men ,gives me a powerful yet intricate feeling when I got the assignment brief. And therefore, I decided to go for it as this line gave me a lot of inspirational thoughts. Below are my processes and breakdown of designs.

The technique helps me identify my personality. I am the kind of person who likes details and intricate textures. Exploring from the selected sentence “All king horses and all king mens” the definition portrayed a fusion of western and asian culture.

“Horror Vacui”

[fear of empty space]

In visual art, horror vacui (/ˈhɔrər ˈvɑːkjuːaɪ/; from Latin “fear of empty space”), also kenophobia, from Greek “fear of the empty”), is the filling of the entire surface of a space or an artwork with detail.

Origins

The term is associated with the Italian art critic and scholar Mario Praz, who used it to describe the suffocating atmosphere and clutter of interior design in the Victorian age.[2] Older, and more artistically esteemed examples can be seen on Migration period art objects like the carpet pages of Insular illuminated manuscripts such as the Book of Kells. This feeling of meticulously filling empty spaces also permeates Arabesque Islamic art from ancient times to the present. Another example comes from ancient Greece during the Geometric Age (1100 – 900 BCE), when horror vacui was considered a stylistic element of all art. The mature work of the French Renaissance engraver Jean Duvet consistently exhibits horror vacui.

Vacui’s printed wallpaper instillation of repetitive hands invokes the experience of haptic technology through virtual environments that Vacui describes as ‘the obsessive search for the tactile’.

“Chinese”

[The strong subtle threshold]

The strong element that the Chinese portray, I decided to infuse the western and Chinese context. Below are the selected thresholds that i will be exploring further.

The line that i decided to focus on will be ” All king horses and all king mens” Just the sentence itself, it creates a strong vibe and element. Giving it a powerful feeling that is rich in texture and details.

“Nursery Days”

[Bringing back the childhood memories]

Bringing back the childhood memories, step into a world filled with beloved characters such as Mary had a little lamb, the old women who lived in her shoes, and Humpty Dumpty.

Brainstorming on which rhyme to take, i decided to explore various images to come out with the most favourable theme that suits my theme.

Here are some of the images that i choose.... countless photos to edit~~~

During the research, the strong powerful element that the Chinese portray, i decided to focus on the Chinese context. It would be interesting to explore the western and asian context.
