Lino Cut – Love at First Sight

For my lino cut story, it is a story about “Love At First Sight”. I had this inspiration after taking a short vacation trip to Bangkok during the recess week and decided to portray my story using lino cutting.

It was during the recess week of the semester that my friends and I decided to have a short trip to Bangkok. I travelled by air and hence the aeroplane in the lino cut. It shows the aeroplane flying towards the globe which is indicated by the implied lines behind the plane.

As for the flag sticking out of the globe, it represents the country I was heading to, which was Thailand.

During the trip, I went to many different shopping malls and markets. Most of them were selling food, clothes, toys and souvenirs. But there was one night market called Roi Fat night market, that I chanced upon a booth selling baby rabbits while I was strolling through the market. I can’t help but smile to myself seeing how cute those rabbits were. But on the other hand, it was saddening to see all the rabbits being locked up in very small confined cages.

But there was this one particular rabbit that caught my attention from the very beginning and I fell in love with it. Without hesitation, I immediately bought it.  And now it has became my very own pet rabbit. Her name is called Snuggles.

Nightscape Painting and Papercut

After taking multiple night shots, I’ve decided to use this picture because of the nice colours that are in the picture. As we can see, the sky is slowly turning dark and the road is wet, enhancing the reflection of the light by the lamp post as well as the light from the walkway.

In this painting, most of the colours are filled with green and blue which are cool colours.  And to balance out the cool colours, warm colours such as orange and yellow are used which are the security post and the reflections of the light from the lamp posts.

The toughest part of this painting is the painting of the trees to make it look as realistic as possible.

For this paper cut, I tried to follow the colours of the painting as much as I could. Firstly, I drew the whole painting onto the paper with pencil. After which, I planned what colours to be used for which specific part of the picture and proceeded with the cutting and sticking. And lastly, was to pin up the few paper cut which I feel will bring out the whole picture to make it come alive!

The toughest part of this paper cutting will be to follow the lines and proportion of all the different things in the picture.

#1 Social Realism

“Persecution”

Write-Up: This painting made me think about how lucky I am to be borned in an era where I don’t get to face war and tortures. And yes I do empathize them for having to go through such painful days in the past.

“Here they come!”

Write-Up: For this painting, it’s titled “Here they come!”. So I’m assuming that they are selling stuff without a legal certificate to do so and police are coming and they have to pack their things and run. It made me feel how much they have to go through just to earn that little bit of money to support their families. I empathize them for having to support their families in such a scary way whereby they might be caught one day.

#2 Wood/Lino Cuts
IMG_1957
Write Up: Yes, the texture of the marks creates a different feeling. For the paintings of social realism, they have colors, therefore it is easy to tell what the artist is trying to paint. But as for the lino cut, it only has black and white. The artist has to make it very clear with the texture of the strokes of the cuts in the wood to fully portray what exactly the artist wants to show.

On a bright sunny day at a park, a little boy was happily eating his ice cream to cool himself from the hot weather. An ant spotted the boy and was sad that it could not find anything to eat. As the ant was staring at every action of the boy eating the ice cream, it heard a sound “Piak!!”. It was the sound of a piece of ice cream hitting the ground. As it’s eye started to glow, it rushed back to informed it’s colony. The colony of ants started to attack the fallen ice cream on the floor. And they slowly brought it back for the Queen ant to eat.
