Figure Transformation (Updated!)

Character 1

The first character that I chose to create is a female nerd, as I was inspired by my sister, who games and reads a lot. I chose this pose as I felt that it was more reserved and withdrawn, which is how I wanted my character to be like. I was also inspired by a character called Diggie from Mobile Legends, as I felt he gave off the ‘nerd’ vibe as well, thus I adapted some of his clothing and accessories into my design. I also gave my character comfy and warm winter clothes, as I think it gives a very homely effect, and also because nerds tend to prefer being indoors. I think I might experiment with more poses later on too.

Character 2

When I look at this pose, I think of exercise and yoga because of the spread out action of the legs. Hence I decided to create a character doing yoga. Most of the pictures I found online of people doing yoga are pictures of slim and thin women. I wanted to break away from that and try to draw a slightly plumber woman doing yoga instead, as I thought it would be more interesting. I looked at references of plumb women online, but still found it challenging to draw her, as I was too used to drawing slim figures. I hoped I managed to capture her form well! But if I choose to feature her in my comic, I think I would try to refine the design further, to give her more personality.

UPDATE

Since sweaters had a lot of folds, I practiced drawing them before drawing my final character, as I was not very good at drawing clothing.

I decided to change her outfit to clothing that I could get more detailed references for, but still kept the feel of the character that I wanted.

I added a background of a classroom, as I wanted my short narrative to be about my character reminiscing about her past as a child. Since school is where most of my childhood memories were formed, and also because my character is a nerd who enjoys reading, I decided to base the location in an empty classroom.

I did not have much experience drawing plump people, hence I decided to do these drawings to learn more about the different body type that I was unfamiliar with drawing.

I searched online for pictures of plump people doing yoga and combined them together to form this pose, based on my initial sketch. I chose to feature her home in the background, as I imagine my character to be more comfortable in her home meditating at her own pace, as opposed to going out for yoga classes. For both characters, I tried my best to draw out their faces and fingers, as I acknowledged those areas as my weaknesses, and spent more time on them. Even though I am still not completely satisfied with them, I felt that I had improved a lot throughout the course of this sem. 🙂
