My Favourite Still Life

Pedro Pedro, Table In Studio With Lotion And Denatured Alcohol, 2020.

My favourite still life painting is this painting by Pedro Pedro, which shows a table filled with pots of paint, stationery, paintbrushes and daily objects like a pair of sunglasses and a bottle of lotion.

I found the range of objects very amusing, as one would not usually find things like keys and sunglasses, amongst a table in a studio, which might contain things related to painting only. They drew my attention around the table, as they stood out as being ‘out of place’ in an art studio.

I also liked the way Pedro stylised the table, painting it in a slanted position, not often seen in still life paintings. I think this made the painting more surreal and whimsical. His bright use of colours and minimal shadows reminded me of a children book’s illustration too.

Pedro’s use of black on the caps of the paint bottles also directed my attention, from the paint bottles on the left, and slowly moved towards the right of the table. It made me look at all the other objects in between more closely, making me appreciate the effort he put into painting them.

I also really liked the small detail of the white sock on the table leg, which stood out amongst the negative space around it, as it made me look more towards the bottom of the table, rather than focusing on just the wide array of objects on the table. The white sock also formed a triangle shape together with the white cloth under the paintbrushes, and the white cloth under the paint bottles, catching my attention.

I think overall, I find it really interesting how Pedro was able to establish some form of structure in his composition of objects and use of colour, even though the painting, at first glance, looked really chaotic and overwhelming.
