“desktop is your window to the digital world
desktop is your first step into virtual reality
desktop is a reflection of your individuality
desktop is your everyday visual environment
desktop is an extension of your organs
desktop is the face of your computerdesktop is a question
desktop is the answer”
–Alexei Shulgin, Desktop Is, 1997
So many description about desktop ,that’s Alexei want to present ; he pointed out the trivial detail everyone usually skip it . With the passage of time , technology becomes more and more important for human being , and we use computer oftentimes ,but is there anyone who pay attention to your desktop? What’s the meaning of your desktop? That’s the question artist mention and want everyone to reflect on .
As with much virtual engagement anonymity and distance from each other can foster an environment seemingly unmoored from ethics and human compassion.– Adrienne Jenik, So Far and Yet So Close: Lessons Drawn from Telematic Improvisation, Cyposium the Book, Link Editions, 2014
Indeed, telematics can give us a kind of intimacy, maybe from anonymity or maybe it just a kinfd of feeling that you can sense and virtual things seem palpable. In stark comparison , Alexei tries to expose personal detail, especially their desktop!! for me , it’s a challenge for virtual world ; besides ,because work made by artists are contingent , it sometimes meet their needs to present virtual world (half truth half fault )
