The final project for the 1st semester was rather challenging because it made you think who you really are: what makes you, you and how you express it in a visual way. One of the difficulties i encountered during this assignment was my approach to the equation; what i wanted to show: qualities? appearance? habits? But at the end i manage to tackle the assignment using lots of symbolical elements and representations that really describe who i am.

My ideation process was very tedious and mind tiring because i could not get the right elements into the equation but ultimately it lead me to a solution which i am satisfied with. Below are my ideas and some parts of the equations might feel a bit off because i interpreted some of them abstractly.

The final draft is my final solution for this project. The incorporation of some of my initial ideas to the new ones really mixed and matched well into the equation, that is why decided to go for the last one.

 

I used a lot of double exposure in my work because i believe it can show 2 different aspects of a same ‘object’. My approach is primarily symbolical, whereby pictures/illustrations convey meanings which are already known to us.

How did i address the colour schemes in my composition?

I used different filters; overlays; gradients and played with the hues; vibrance; values to obtain a desired colour harmony.

1. Passion

Passion

I depicted passion using a heart double exposed with a burning flame because passion is this intense feeling of desire or drive that pushes you forward. And the most prominent colour that associates with passion is red symbolizes energy, ambition, passion.

2. Hardwork

Hardwork

 

In this composition, i used a symbolic figure, which is the titan Atlas from the Greek mythology because according to the myth he was the one to hold up the sky. Atlas being me and the sky being my workload. The colour brown is generally associated with support, responsibility and hence hardwork, that is why i implemented it into my artwork. The sky (milkyway) which is mostly seen to have a purple tint balances the Russet Brown to give this harmonised composition.

3. ME

Me

One definitive feature about me is my hairstyle. I portrayed a skull with a man bun on which i applied a reddish brown texture to show the mixture between the 2 colours used in the previous compositions

4. Creative thinking
Creative thinking

For me, creativity is the explosion of ideas and there is no boundary to limit that. This is why the explosion is going out of the brain showing that you cannot stop this energetic flow/explosion of ideas. Creativity for me can be related to any colours because of its infiniteness, that is why i used different colours.

5. Overthinking

Overthinking

This composition is rather straight forward because people who tend to overthink, feel that their head is exploding. The use of colours here is mainly to show unstability, disoriented and this flickering effect. The meaning behind the 2 colours are very contrasting because red which symbolizes passion, energy and even aggressivity and blue indicate calm, serenity and seriousness. This clash between colours really creates this blurry, unbalanced feeling to the composition.

6. A Better ME
A Better Me

A better me is whereby my mind is at peace and when your mind is at peace you feel like floating which is why the use of hot air balloon. This composition was achieved by adjusting the blending mode between the layers and the colours naturally blended to give this subtle harmonious transition of colour. The pastel effect smoothes out the composition and soothes the one viewing it.

7. Think Different

Think different

The technique used behind this composition is known as colour splash whereby your subject is separated by a colour, especially red, whilst everything else is black and white (monochromatic). I applied this technique to demarcate the focus subject from the background and to define the latter. Physical appearance does not show your way of thinking, it’s only by discovering the person you can have an idea about his thoughts and this is what i wanted to demonstrate here.

8. Ideas
Ideas

The portrayal of ‘ideas’ is always communicated by the illustrations of light bulbs. (Often used in cartoons). The colour used is yellow because it signifies clarity, intellect, optimism and enlightenment. The combination of colour and bulb illustration are very self-complimentary and in addition to this, the harmony of the creamy yellow is nicely balanced by the bluish background which also contains tints of orange and indigo.

 9. Ideal ME

An ideal me

My aspiration is to become someone  like Steve Jobs who was a visionary. The reason why i censored the eyes is because the eyes is the most definitive characteristic of an individual’s face and ideal me does not what to be exactly the same as Steve Jobs but someone similar and even better in the field of design (backed by the sketches in the background). Yellow (optimism)+ Red(passion)= Orange which signifies success.

10. Knowledge

Knowledge

The following montage adds the elements learnt from assignment 1 (lines) to the current one. Knowledge is represented by dark blue of different shades. Another good allegorical depiction of knowledge is a tree whereby when you grow up you acquire more knowledge and more wisdom. This concept of growth is also backed by the use of a harlequin green on the tree. Nonetheless wavy lines in the background can be interpreted as radiating from the brain but can also be interpreted as lines directed towards the brain which means that knowledge is a 2 way process.

11. Experience

Experience

When we all grow older, we physically and mentally mature and that’s what experience is about. The main elements that conveys this ideology in the composition is the double exposed tree and beard. Similarly to above, trees are significance of growth but also of maturity whereby the trees’ leaves turn yellow. (ripening)

12. ME in 5 years

Me in 5 years

Me in 5 years. It’s hard to tell what you are going to be in 5 years, but i envision myself working full-time as a product designer whereby my skills matches my desire to excel in this domain. Last but not least, in the composition i used a blue filter to show the seriouness but also the serenity,stability to do the things i like to and also the use of a light orange circular gradient (on the hands) to show that in some way i succeeded to become who i want to be. (orange-success)

Through out this semester i have learnt many ways to express oneself visually and project 3 was the epitome among the 3 projects because it made me discover more about myself and at the same time depict the invisible onto the visible using different medium.

What is Colour Harmony?

Harmony is nature’s way of saying that two or more things together make sense. Colour harmony represents a satisfying balance or unity of colours. Combinations of colours that exist in harmony are pleasing to the eye. The human brain distinguishes the visual interest and the sense of order created by the harmony and forms a dynamic equilibrium.

Colour Harmonies

Monochromatic harmony uses various values (tints, tones, and shades) within the same colour family.

Analogous harmonies are based on three or more colours that sit side-by-side on the color wheel.

Complementary colours (or Direct Complementary) are those that appear opposite each other on the colour wheel.16

 

A split-complementary colour arrangement results from one colour paired with two colours on either side of the original colour’s direct complement creating a scheme containing three colours.

Double complement harmonies include two sets of complementary colours that sit next to and across from each other on the colour wheel forming an X.

Tetrad combinations are made up of four hues equal distance from one another, forming a square or rectangle on the colour wheel.

Colour greatly affect the psychology of an individual. People react differently to different colour palettes and by associating different colours one can create and set a mood.

Colours and Emotions

Colours is a form of non-verbal communication. Our perception of colours greatly influence our mood as an individual as it can add vividness to an environment or subject but also dullness and monotony.

There’s an infinite number of tints and tones for a colour, but the most relatable and basic ones are the primary and secondary colours which form part of the colour wheel.

These are the colors I would generally identify:

Red, Yellow, Blue (primary)
Orange, Green, Purple (secondary)

N.B: In the visible spectrum, white reflects light and is a presence of all colours, but black absorbs light and is an absence of colour. (Physicists have proven it, as per the diffraction ecand your argument is invalid!)

The Meaning of Colours

Red is the color of energy, passion, action, ambition and determination. It is also the color of anger and sexual passion.

With the meaning of colors, in color psychology, yellow is the color of the mind and the intellect. It is optimistic and cheerful. However it can also suggest impatience, criticism and cowardice.

Blue is the color of trust and peace. It can suggest loyalty and integrity as well as conservatism and frigidity.

Orange is the color of social communication and optimism. From a negative color meaning it is also a sign of pessimism and superficiality.

Green is the color of balance and growth. It can mean both self-reliance as a positive and possessiveness as a negative, among many other meanings. 

Purple is the color of the imagination. It can be creative and individual or immature and impractical.

 

Project 2

I explored all the 12 rhythms whereby every rhyme is part of my development process. At the beginning of my exploration, i felt that some of the rhymes were a bit flat and offbeat in terms of composition and were not strong enough to be an artwork. But once i got the hold of it and efficiently made use of the design principles i managed to create some interesting composition.

The Principles of D E S I G N

What is ‘principles of design’?

From my point of view, the principles of design is the use of the elements of design in such a way that an artwork feels coherent and convey the information its supposed to give.  I believe that the proper application of the principles of design  determines how successful we are at creating a work of art and how good or bad it is.

What are the principles of design?

Through out my research i came across these:

  1. BALANCE
  2. DOMINANCE/EMPHASIS/CONTRAST
  3. UNITY
  4. SCALE/PROPORTION

1. BALANCE

It is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space. If the design was a scale, these elements should be balanced to make a design feel stable. In symmetrical balance, the elements used on one side of the design are similar to those on the other side; in asymmetrical balance, the sides are different but still look balanced. In radial balance, the elements are arranged around a central point and may be similar.

2. DOMINANCE/EMPHASIS/CONTRAST

It is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention. Usually the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area could be different in size, color, texture, shape, etc.

3. UNITY

It is the feeling of harmony between all parts of the work of art, which creates a sense of completeness.

4. SCALE/PROPORTION

Using the relative size of elements against each other can attract attention to a focal point. When elements are designed larger than life, scale is being used to show drama.

Project 1

“A line is a dot that went for a walk.”

18 emotions expressed using lines. My main sources of inspiration for this project are: cartoons which portrays this kind of emotions in an exaggerated manner; personal interpretation/perception of these emotions.

  1. Anxious– When i’m anxious i usually feel like i’m suffocating or drowning. Here i tried to depict bubbles, as if i’m being drag into the abyss of the ocean.
  2. Embarrassed– This one is inspired from cartoons. Whenever you feel embarrassed you feel sweaty and want to hide from the rest of the world. So i tried to make sweat droplets in a cartoon way with black droplets hiding behind the white droplets. By contrasting those two, i wanted to show that the black droplets are hiding behind the white droplets.
  3. Bizarre– Also inspired from cartoons. Whenever i see something bizarre i immediately think about the cartoon cliche, eyes watching you from every direction and wavy random lines.
  4. Exhausted(presentation)- This one is interesting because, when i feel exhausted, my body and my mind feels like falling apart. In the panel, i used lines in such a way that it looks like loose threads hanging,dripping,falling,crumbling down. The contrast here is that the lines is less dense at the top showing that energy is being sapped out.
  5. Fragile– To me fragile feels like cracked glass. The medium used to demonstrate this emotion is collage.( give a sense of contrast )
  6. Systematic– To me it feels like statistics,graphs being plotted.
  7. Lyrical– Lyrical is melodious and everything having a melody must have nice rhythm. So here i used alternate black and white regions to try and create a sense of rhythm but rhythm alone is not enough lyrical, therefore i incorporated circles going in and out of space (creating some depth) flowing around.
  8. Turbulent– Inspired from nature. i.e crashing waves. Medium used is charcoal. I think that charcoal is a really good medium to capture the swirls of the crashing waves and to emphasize the this turbulent feeling (smudging).
  9. Nonsensical– Meaningless, it is defined using lines to make shapes which does not have any or any sense at all! For instance i included a circle to make the pattern out of context.
  10. Psychotic– Through experimentation using chinese ink and blowing through a straw, i came with this random, bold pattern with curvy spikes and immediately saw it as psychotic.
  11. Ambiguous– For me ambiguous is vague, unclear and blurry. So for this emotion i tried to make it like out of focus circles which is called as ‘bokeh’ balls in photography.
  12. Distracted– Whenever i feel distracted my thoughts diverge away and for me to focus back (converge) takes a lot of time. This is what i wanted to demonstrate using the lines here.
  13. Sensual– To me sensual is related to curvy shapes and forms which arouses the senses. Inspiration: female figure; flowers.
  14. Sloven– Disorder, untidy, careless. When approaching this emotion, i tried to be messy like scribbling around, smudging paint everywhere…
  15. Spontaneous– I found this one quite interesting because to me spontaneous feel sudden, brusque like an explosion.
  16. Aggressive– Aggressive feels bold and spiky to me. Spikes going all directions.
  17. Awkward– Through experimentation i came through this idea. Awkwardness is  rather a deep feeling but yet it feels like flowing away after sometimes. By using dots i wanted to show this deep feeling and by shaping/grouping them into a wave form suggested the way it flows.
  18. Indecisive– Left or right? Up or down? I do not know where to go. To me this is how it feels.
