I AM A MOON

01

Scenario:

I am being represented by a moon. Moon gets thrown into a random beach. But because the moon adapts well, it turns into a coconut.

Real life:

I am comfortable in my own zone and one day, I am forced to live in a foreign land – NTU hall of residence. But because I, myself, can adapt to situations very well, I make new friends and I end up enjoying my time in hall life.

screen-shot-2016-11-14-at-12-59-48-pm

lonemoon

I first started with a pink moon because pink is my favourite colour as of right now. But because the moon was rather plain on its own, I decided to add in some more ideas.

As the moon affects the waves, I decided to add in some waves to represent the struggles in my life.

And of course the moon will never alone in the sky because they will be surrounded by stars! So I used some stars in my background to represent my friends.

I used complementary colours for this design because I wanted the design to blend together well yet not have all the same colour tones. I’m glad I found this colour scheme that also had some blues so I could make the waves their realistic colour. But overall, because the base colour is a warm baby pink colour, it shows the emotion of comfort juxtaposed with a cooler tone emotion of internal struggles.

screen-shot-2016-11-14-at-2-31-23-pm

mooncrash

Starting with the sandy beach and deep blue waters, I felt that using complementary colours best brought out all the natural colours one sees on the beach. The colour scheme even had a green colour I could use for the palm trees. However, after trying the khaki colour out on the trees, I thought it was a little bit off, and I wanted to accent it more to showcase the beach. So I decided to increase the saturation of the green colour, giving it a strong contrast against the pale yellow beach.

I used a dustier colour of blue for the sky because I wanted to showcase the looming negative feeling of gloomy skies because this depicted an unfortunate situation of the moon almost crashing on the beach.

screen-shot-2016-11-15-at-7-20-50-pm

screen-shot-2016-11-15-at-7-25-16-pm

mooncoconut

Starting off with the idea of the moon turning into a coconut, I wanted to match the moon to a coconut colour which is brown. So I used a triadic colour scheme for it at first. But I realised that I wanted to everything a lot warmer because it is as though the moon is enjoying itself under the sun, lazing on the beach in bliss (which is a warm comforting colour). So I searched for more monochromatic colour schemes.

So I used the cool colour and outstanding colours as little accents in the arm chair (red) and the cyan blue drink umbrella so that the design has a bit more interesting elements that pop out of the rather monochromatic theme.

I AM A FUR COAT

2oss

People know me for my obsession with furry things. From rugs, to bags, to slippers etc etc… I love them all furry!

So I decided to represent myself as a fur coat. This is a story of how I often get misunderstood for supporting the use of real fur. Which, I definitely DO NOT advocate.

Scenario:

So in this story, how I get misunderstood is getting chased by paint buckets full of angry red paint that want to ruin my white fur coat and I am running away from them. Because I am innocent!

That is represented in the third frame when I was a cute innocent puppy wearing a fur coat all along! And I really do love animals a lot. I personally have two dogs at home, which I love to death.

screen-shot-2016-11-15-at-7-41-14-pm

furcoat

For this I used triadic colours but only focused on 2 of those colours to bring out the fur coat. I used warmer colours to for the white fur of the coat contrast against a cool purple background to make the coat stand out. I wanted to use purple to represent the elegance and sophistication of how I feel when I wear a fur coat.

screen-shot-2016-11-15-at-7-47-51-pm

redpaintsplash

Using a warm monochromatic colour scheme to bring out the idea of panic and danger, that’s how I brought out this idea of the fur coat running away in panic for the fear of being splashed by red paint. This also represents the anger of those who think the fur is advocating animal cruelty.

And I muted the colours of the buckets, making them monochrome as well, to bring out the cold harsh emotion they are emulating while they are doing this horrible act.

cutepuppy

I wanted to use white for the puppy and the fur coat to emulate the idea of purity and innocence, as the fur coat was being misunderstood for being for animal cruelty. As the white colours used in the puppy and fur coat had some hint of cool tones, I decided to use an analogous blue background to bring about the emotion of peace and loyalty of the idea of the final reveal (of the puppy in the fur coat).

I AM A PAIR OF GLASSES

untitled-2

Scenario:

Started off a pair of boring old tinted glasses but because of the features on billboard advertisements for sunglasses, it shot up to fame. However, fame definitely has its consequences. The final frame shows the sunglasses’ glass cracking under the pressure of fame.

screen-shot-2016-11-15-at-8-15-13-pm

glasses

The most boring colour is arguably brown according to some online sources. Using complementary tones of brown to bring out the dark and plain glasses on an old yellowed page of a book with coffee stains gives the image a very down to earth vibe. It also feels really cozy because of the warm tones used. This is to showcase me as a warm hearted person albeit a little bit plain and boring.

This contrasts greatly to the next frame which is:

screen-shot-2016-11-15-at-8-38-27-pm

sunglassadvertisement

This slightly neon coloured frame! I used the triadic colour harmony to bring out the colours of the sunglasses, which now became pink and yellow (both of which are attention-grabbing colours). The background of towering buildings were a more muted green to cause the pink and yellow to stand out more. This was due to the idea of advertisements as they are supposed to be loud and attention grabbing.

I made the girl in the advertisement and the hands pointing at it monochromatic because I didn’t want them to distract from the accented sunglasses in the frame. They are simply elements to help the narrative a little more.

screen-shot-2016-11-15-at-8-55-58-pm

cracked

I used the analogous colour harmony revolving around yellow (attention-grabbing) to get this idea of the red carpet and its flashlights.

I made the background black as well to give the ominous feeling because this was supposed to represent a negative feeling of the glasses cracking under pressure.

I AM A LIPSTICK

04

Scenario:

I am a lipstick that undergoes a lot of scrutiny from people who want to find out what’s underneath my layers, picking at my flaws. I am initially scared of what people will think of me when they find out I am not really what I portray. However in the last frame, I transform into a thorny dangerous cactus because I get vicious when people push me too far.

Real life:

People like to pick at my biggest insecurity, which is me without makeup. Hence, I used a lipstick to define me.

I am fine with those who acknowledge I look different with and without makeup but I do not appreciate when people use it against me as it is after all my biggest insecurity. I will still get scared when people force their opinions or their actions on me too hard. I guess I get defensive of the things I choose to and not to reveal to others and I do not like it when people actively force it out of me.

screen-shot-2016-11-15-at-7-47-51-pm

lipstick

I used monochromatic colour harmony to bring forth the idea of a lovable me who likes to spread love to everyone around me. As I am, at this stage, at a very neutral emotion, I depicted myself as a nude lipstick. The kiss stains around me is to represent the love I like to spread to those around me.

screen-shot-2016-11-15-at-9-17-21-pm

peelinglipstick

I changed the colour of the lipstick to purple to represent timidness. The blue background is also used to signify coldness of those who pick at my insecurity. I used a flower and its petals as the layers one will “peel” off to reveal my inner insecurities.

screen-shot-2016-11-15-at-9-17-21-pm

cactusbitch

Using the same analogous colour harmony as before, I just changed up the head of the lipstick to a thorny cactus that has the same monochromatic colour as the leaves of the flower. Finally, I wanted a fierce colour that was also pastel (to match the theme) to showcase the idea of aggressiveness. I was quite pleased to find out that orange could be used as aggressive (maybe the association with the tiger?) because it really blended well with the rest of the frame’s colours but still stands out nonetheless.

Difficulties & Takeaways

I think that the introduction of colour in this project really sent me into a frenzy.

First of all, getting the right colour to represent the emotions compared to the realistically appropriate colour for the object is drastically different. I find that it was easier for me to stick to the conventional colour schemes of the realistic world. However, I did challenge myself by incorporating different colours to represent the emotions even though they may not be totally accurate in real life.

Also, deciding on the different colour harmonies is also quite difficult. It actually helps a lot to already have an idea of what colours you want to use in your head first before selecting the different harmonies.

And of course, as everyone has whined and complained, thinking of the scenarios was also rather tough. I wanted some of my scenarios to incorporate some personal experiences I face in real life and I’m glad I managed to highlight it.

I am also glad that the chart I made prior to starting this project on the possible items that can represent me and the scenarios I wanted to portray came into handy. (See previous post!) It was easier to match the items and the scenarios in that sense and of course, knowing the nature of the items (e.g. Lipstick to represent bare face insecurity) made the narrative a lot simpler.

I am quite impressed that colour theory did come into extreme use here and the emotions that one wants to portray can be brought forth extremely accurately with the introduction of colour. That was my main takeaway of this project. I also realised that I preferred pastel colour schemes more so than strong bold colours. But I am also happy that I did try to push beyond that for some of my frames because I thought it was necessary for my story and emotions as well.

End Project 3.

Project 3 Process

moodboard

First of all, I had to find out what can represent me.

Here was my list of ideas that I wanted to use to represent myself and these are all items that I like the most or are things that I wear very often.

MOON      FUR COAT     CACTUS

WHALE          BOOTS       FLOWERS

MERMAID       LIPSTICK       SEASHELL

GEODES         DRESS        LACE BRA

SCENARIOS

Here are some scenarios that I came up with to match a few of the items I had to represent me. From there, I started matching up the items and the scenarios that I want represented in this project.

1. Insecurity (Makeup being stripped away?) – Lipstick?

2. Lost in Travel – Moon?

3. Being in love – Bra? Whale?

4. Being betrayed to/lied to – Cactus?

5. Surprise party – Geodes?

6. Becoming famous – Fur coat? Sunglasses?

Project 2: Process & Final

Quote #1: “Lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off.”

lying-is-the-most-fun-a-girl-can-have-without-taking-her-clothes-off

Final design: 1closer

So first of all, I decided to break the quote up into key words to focus the visuals on. So the keys words/phrases are:

Lying, fun, girl and taking her clothes off

After I’ve determined these, I went on to list down visuals I could use to represent those key words.

LYING: Snake, snake tongue hissing, lips

GIRL: Physical body of a woman, woman’s lips, wig

TAKING HER CLOTHES OFF: Lingerie, pile of clothes on the floor

I actually wanted to focus my image on a lady’s wig to represent the girl such as this image:

fccc284c83cbde143ed3b0b249b597db

But I realise that it was tough to incorporate the snake prints into it.

So I decided upon using these images: cdesignvisuals

That’s how I first put together my first design:

c1

But I felt that the mouth was too centralised and dominant, making it very boring and it still lacked an element of ‘fun’.

So I added this visual:

tumblr_m4uh69szdh1qz9v0to1_1280

Using the snake’s head and tongue to represent a lady’s tongue sticking out of her mouth to signify the fun. (think Miley Cyrus haha)

miley8

I also used it to de-centralise the mouth so it made it more dynamic. This also shifted the visual weight (which was the mouth) to the right and the tongue towards the right-hand direction makes your eyes move from the left to right on the overall design, creating a direction for the line of sight.

Hence, the final result!

1closer

This is also the design I chose to have printed on my totebag:

img_4267 img_4271 img_4274 img_4275 img_4276img_4289img_4317fullsizerender

Proud mama.

Yay that’s the end of quote #1!

Quote #2: “I don’t kiss strange men”

closer01

Final Design:

strangemen

I broke up the quote up into key words once again to determine the visuals I wanted to incorporate.

Key words: Kiss, strange, men

KISS: Lips, mistletoe, night, moon, lipstick, heart

STRANGE: animal, con-man (fox? wolf? snake?)

MEN: Suits, figure, wine

I found these following images that I thought could work:

quote2

This was the result of my first draft:

strangemen1

It just kinda looked off?

I think it is because the elements are not linked very well visually, they look very separated and standalone. The circle that the moon shape produces a circle frame that is too much symmetry for the image – hence it was a little boring and doesn’t create visual interest.

So I incorporated 2 new images and removed the visuals that were very standalone such as the heart, wine glass and the mistletoe branch.

countrystylewreath2523784752f53a508cab232fb86fa4241

Using a wreath of mistletoe, I added a bit more texture around the surrounding of the moon shape, making it less symmetrical as the flowers are not the same throughout. And I used the lips as a visual link for the moon face to the fox’s face. The dots also provided a more textured background to fill in the negative space of the circle.

And hence the final design!

strangemen

Doesn’t the fox so accurately represent ‘strange men‘ though? I love it.

Quote #3: “You think you know someone, and you realise that it’s all been a big lie.”

tumblr_m2li3ghtfw1qmt5mvo1_500

Final design:

shestheman

Once again, breaking down the quote, here are my key words:

Know someone, realise, big lie

KNOW SOMEONE: exposed – almost naked lady, revealing – unzipping

REALISE: Brain, lightbulb, snapping of fingers

BIG LIE: Snake, tongue, fox

Visuals I used:

quote3

I wanted to do an unzipping of the brain to symbolise the ‘realisation’ and the girl who is wearing very little (like just underwear) to symbolise the revealing of the person.

So I came up with something like this:

shestheman

The leading lines that makes your eyes look from the top left (where the lady is) down to the bottom right (where the end of the zip is).

It’s as though it was a realisation to the brain that the girl turned out to be a snake (big lie). – link to quote!

But the negative space at the top left corner that I felt drew too much attention away from the line of sight that starts from the lady and down to the snake and to the unzipping of the brain.

So I decided to add a bit of gradient to add towards the visual of the leading lines. And I feel that this helped the entire design to meld together better as well.

shestheman

And hence this final design!

Quote #4: “Every opportunity has a shelf life.”

burlesque2-copy

Final design:

opportunity

The key words in this quote are:

Opportunity, shelf life

OPPORTUNITY: grabbing hands, doors, pyramids

SHELF LIFE: milk, decomposing, weeds, mould

Visuals used:

burlesque

This was what I came up with. I played with the scale as well by making the milk carton my main visual so I made it the largest, the dominant element in this design.

opportunity1

But I felt that the visual was too centralised once again and the milk carton did not blend well with the background. So I changed up the dynamics of the visuals to create the final design:

opportunity

I added a melted texture to the milk carton to simulate the decomposing feeling of the carton. And shifted the image to the side so that it will seem like its growing outwards to the top left side of the image. This gives it the visual weight that will make the design more interesting.

Hence this is the final design!

Overall I feel that this assignment is very eye-opening. It caused me to widen my scope of design by incorporating elements I never thought to use as well. This definitely challenged me to think of objects to relate back to my quote which is not very easy. But I feel that this is essential to my designs and ideas as well. Hence I really am very happy to have embarked on this journey for Project 2 as it expanded my design skills and perspective.

Project 2 Research: Quotes

QUOTE #1:

lying-is-the-most-fun-a-girl-can-have-without-taking-her-clothes-off“Lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off…”     – Closer

One of my favourite quotes from one of my favourite movies of all time. The moment the project was announced, this was the quote that kept ringing in my head. I wanted to challenge myself to work on this quote because I think that it doesn’t visually allow for much elements to show for.

QUOTE #2:

closer01

2. “I don’t kiss strange men.” – Closer

I like this quote (also from the same movie) because of the fact that it was at a very ironic moment. And I thought that it was a quote that could allow for very interesting visual elements.

QUOTE #3:

tumblr_m2li3ghtfw1qmt5mvo1_500

“You think you know someone and you realise it’s all been a big lie.”        – She’s The Man

Another quote that resonated very much with me. I love this romantic comedy because it was hilarious and heartwarming as well. This was one of the heartwarming parts before it turned into a hilarious moment again. And the quote really rings true!

QUOTE #4:

burlesque2-copy

“Every opportunity has a shelf life.” – Burlesque

Another quote from another one of my favourite movies. This is one of those quotes that really made one ponder. And I love that. So I decided to create it into a visual for this project assignment.

Stay tuned for the later posts on how it all came out!

  1. Attraction

attraction

Definition:

The action or power of evoking interest in or liking for someone or something.”

img_8147

As they say – opposite attracts. To me, attraction is when two opposite individuals find a connection between them.

I wanted to do something that stipulates two seemingly opposite individuals that converge to a middle point. I used thick rounded brush stokes for the line on the left, and smaller squiggly brush strokes for the line on the right. They meet together at a physical point (I cut the both strips to have a tip that meets). For me, the feeling of attraction is kind of a electric buzz that feels comfortable – hence I glued black sand onto both tips to simulate that feeling.

2. Arousal

arousal

Definition:

“To cause (someone) to be active, attentive, or excited, to stimulate sexual desire in.”

img_8174

There’s no doubt that the curves of a woman can ultimately cause some arousal. I once read in a book about a man describing how he felt aroused by the moonlight illuminating the curves and crevasses of a lady’s body and that was my inspiration for expressing this emotion. Using marker lines, I highlighted the contours of the lady’s body such that it leads ones’ eyes down her body, exploring it as you would in real life.

3. Fondness

fondness

Definition:

“affection or liking for someone or something.”

img_8158

I feel very bubbly inside when I am fond of something. When I experimented with mark making with sponges, I really liked the results of swirling the sponge with ink on paper. The print came out to be swishy and enclosed, which is how I would imagine warm waves to feel like. That to me feels the most similar to fondness. (See process below)

4. Content

content

Definition:

“perfect happiness; great contentment.”

I associate contentment with water, and that’s because people tend to feel life’s contentment when they are surrounded with water (e.g. on a beach vacation, floating in a swimming pool). I used a can with ink to create these symmetrical circular shapes that all links together in a semi-uniformed manner, which I think represents contentment the most.

5. Enthrallment

enthrallment

Definition:

“a feeling of great liking for something wonderful and unusual.”

img_8178

I imagine enthrallment to be an emotion that a child would feel when they discover something new. The innocence of a child will probably see the new item as something magical, somewhat like a dandelion that sparkles. That’s why I wanted to create a twinkly dandelion print with sun-like rays that sparkles. I used sand and ink to create dotted textures and swirling motions to get the circular spirals. I used sand and acrylic paint to get texturised sun rays and then sprinkled glitter all around to get the print to shimmer.

6. Optimism

optimism

Definition:

“a disposition or tendency to look on the more favourable side of events or conditions and to expect the most favourable outcome.”

img_8154

I believe that being optimistic means to look on the bright side even in the worst situations.

I created this mark using water, white paint and black paper. Firstly, I filled a container with minimal water (so that it makes a base for the paint) and I dripped the white paint in to create organic flowy textures. Finally I dunked the black paper in to grab the white paint and this made it mix with the water as well. The results were really organic and it looks like light bursting forth from the black background. That to me is optimism.

I also like how that towards the right side of the mark there’s a gathering of white paint. This is the light bursting forth from the darkness and the other white splotches are the manifestation of the light, that continues to seep through the black until it will finally overtake all the darkness.

7. Surprise

surprise

Definition:

“an unexpected or astonishing event, fact, etc.”

img_8185

I imagine the emotion of surprise in the concept of a surprise party, where one is kept in the dark (the background). The white splatters represents the emotion of shock and the feeling of  joy, and it reminds me of the pop of a champagne bottle, which comes with a sudden jut (the bold straight line on the bottom right corner) followed by splashes of the liquid. The splatters are located on the right corner of the piece to also represent that perpetrators of the surprise often hide in the corner of the room. I did this strip using black foam paper (to get the splatter effect) and then splashing diluted white acrylic paint in the corner.

8. Astonishment

astonishment

Definition:

“overpowering wonder or surprise; amazement.”

img_8164

Using splatters and splashes to represent jolts of surprise, I filled the entire paper with it because I wanted it to be overwhelming – much like how I view the emotion of astonishment to be like. To me, astonishment is getting surprised so much so that it triggers all the nerves in one’s body to become jumpy, much like the lines I created using ink and blowing it throughout the paper with a straw.

9. Astound

astound

Definition:

“stun, shock or greatly surprise.”
img_8193
Astound to me has a negative connotation. The thick straight line symbolises the monotone of time before the shocking event. The outburst of the lines represents the shock that one experiences when he/she hears of the information. This was done with a palette knife and acrylic paint. The effect was not enough for it to be astounding so I decided to burn the middle of the explosion. The burnt hole represents the seemingly long pause of one’s brain to process the information (because it is so much to digest).

10. Outrage

outrage

Definition:

“an extremely strong reaction of anger, shock, or indignation.”

img_8181

I personally depict an outage by stabbing and slashing motions. For that, I used acrylic paint and a palette knife.

Using ink and water, I wanted to make a organic drippy background because I often get so angry that tears will emerge. That’s how extreme the reaction would be for an outrage to occur. The darkness kind of abruptly stops towards the end because once an outrage has been dealt with, the feeling of wanting to express it will stop as well.

11. Vengeance

vengeance

Definition:

“seeking to harm someone in return for a perceived injury.”

img_3303

Vengeance is a violent way of seeking revenge and I perceive it to be angry aggressive stabbing stroke marks. By using large aggressive marks of a palette knife, the marks seems the violence was committed confidently. There’s no hesitation or any chance to turn back and undo these marks because the indentation is stained on the paper (due to the forcefulness of the actions). – See process below.

12. Envy

envy

Definition:

“a feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else’s possessions, qualities, or luck.”

img_8172

img_8168

I view envy with the concept of ‘The grass is always greener on the other side’. That is why I chose some leaves to depict that idea. Placing one whole leaf on one side pointing to the other side with a bunch of leaves pointing back, I hope it stipulates that the lone leaf envies the group dynamic and the bunch of leaves long for wholeness. Hence, the idea of the grass is always greener on the other side. Also, the leaves are coated in black paint (that can be peeled off) to represent that envy is beyond surface deep. Usually no one really voices out that they are envious of another, it is rather kept to themselves. But when the layer of black is peeled off, you can see the “green” with envy that’s underneath.

13. Guilt

guilt

Definition:

“the state of ill-will and bad feeling.”

img_8161

The emotion of guilt to me is a feeling of a constant shroud of darkness following you. It never fully goes away even though it does fade sometimes. Your heart feels heavy and it creeps up on you on some moments more than others. This mark I made using sponges replicates that feeling with some constant shades and some purposefully heavily inked on places.

melancholy

Definition:

“a feeling of pensive sadness, typically with no obvious cause.

A constant lull of sad buzzing lines was what I envision melancholy to be. I drew thicker lines with a marker at the bottom to present a visual weight so that the feeling is viewed to be heavy and weighed down. Even so, the lines were a little too clean for the idea of melancholy to be conveyed. Hence, I used ink and water to shroud the lines with blurry splotches that to me symbolises the lack of cause to the pensive sadness.

img_8199
Using faded ink, I experimented many times before I got something that I felt makes a lot of sense to the emotion of grief. As we read the strip from left to right, there are some black splotches inked. This area to me symbolises the news of death has started inching it’s way to the build up of the actual news sinking in – which hits like a black wave. This intense black wave area seems to swallow the paper before finally starting to fade off. What we have left at the end of the strip is the coping of the devastation. Faded, but it’s still always there. The drip marks at the bottom of this area shows that there are still moments of breakdown but things will clear up in the end.

I think for some people, the fear of the darkness can result in chilling images created out of fearfulness. One of those images that comes to mind is the fear of the unknown shadows and perhaps the idea of something grabbing you out of nowhere. I used brush strokes to simulate this grabbing motions and also emphasized the black in certain areas to depict the shadows we often see in the dark.

(Done in my mark making session #2)

Very simply put, I wanted the idea of dripping blood. I used a syringe to drop the ink on to the paper and quickly tilting the paper to get organic drip marks. The results were way too clean so I decided to smudge and blend it out with black ink with water. The results was very fulfilling because of the blurriness of the drips and it shows the horror spreading itself deeper into the paper.

Using layers of different techniques to bring out tense, I started off with a base of grey paint in short abrupt strokes. This shows the hesitant jolts that one feels when they are tense. This also creates a gloomy background. Next, using charcoal and my fingertips, I repeatedly tapped my fingers all over – to depict the idea of tenseness of rapidly tapping nervous fingers. Finally a controlled scribble was introduces to represent possibly the rapid movements of one’s muscle, heartbeat or nerves that one might have when they are tense.

PROCESS
Mark Making Session #2
I used this second session to really explore more mark making tools and the different marks they could create. As you can see, some of these experimentations actually went on to be some of my final works for this Project Emo.

Using the syringe, I dripped some drops onto the paper and made it flow down. This create a very sinister vibe which reminded me of the emotion ‘horror’. This is what inspired me to create my final piece for submission for ‘horror’ (see above).
I really like the messy dark effect of using the stiff brush with paint. The different intensities I used the brush in made it such that there were some darker marks as compared to the others. This reminded me of a description of my friend’s phobia of the dark. I remembered her telling me she was afraid of the shadows in the night and the feeling of someone grabbing her when she slept, which made me feel that it was very relevant.

img_3304I continued my experimentations once again and I also managed to secure another emotion. That is ‘Vengeance’ done with a palette knife. Using it to spear the paint in a very sharp and abrupt motion, it created some jarring stripes. Then I used the tip of it to slash the paper in a very angry manner (pretty sure I was angry with myself at this point for I was running out of ideas). This created a very angry emotion which I knew immediately would showcase Vengeance.
page3
fondnessI experimented more with circular happy mark making techniques on this piece. Which I am very pleased with because I could see more happy emotions secured. For example, the milo can created some very distinguished warm circular shapes which reminded me of the feeling of contentment. Using the sponge in different ways (such as twisting it on paper) also gave me the inspiration for the soft spiral circles to represent fondness.
Overall, I am very satisfied with how productive my mark making session 2 was. It not only gave me inspiration for future marks to get my emotions for this project, but also allowed me to experiment with the different ways of using the different mark making tools to create the lines. This was definitely beneficial for my process for this project.

End of Project Emo.

Mark Making Session #1

Last Tuesday in 2D class, we experimented with mark making tools. I decided to bring some dried plants (leaves & flowers) as well as sand. Here are the results of it!

Using a dried bunch of leaves, I dipped it into black paint and tried various methods of mark making by dragging it over the paper as well as just directly splotching it at a straight angle downwards.

I really like the print of using the dried Chrysanthemum because of the way the petals look flared out. It looks a little like paw prints or fireworks.

I tried using sand next to create some marks. I tried sprinkling it on the paper after dipping it into the ink but that barely created any marks. So using my hand in swift motions against the paper, I made some marks that resembled mini meteor showers.

This is one of my favourite pieces from that day because of how unexpected the print turned out. I placed my bunch of leaves in the middle and sprinkled sand all over. It came out to have a splattered effect around the stalk of leaves.

I tried using the softer dried flowers like a brush and did very long aggressive strokes along the paper and allowed for the excess ink to drip.

I wanted to monoprint this particular arrangement of flowers but it did not turn out very well.

I loved the silhouettes of the flower petals when I monoprint them. It feels like an X-ray print.

IMG_3017

I used the petals once again (not monoprinting this time) to create this flower print and I love how the details of the petals were captured.

I stole a straw from Jerome (hehe thanks man!) to create this piece which I LOVE because it reminds me of a coral landscape under the sea with a slightly bewitching vibe.

Here’s a curation of all of my favourite pieces from the mark making session that day.

Finally, I ended off my session with some Lino Cuts. I wanted to attempt making one of my favourite whales, which is the Narwhal. It has a really unique spiral horn which I wanted to capture but I feel I can continue to improve on my lino cuts in the next session to make the shape more defined.
