Project 2: Process & Final

Quote #1: “Lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off.”

lying-is-the-most-fun-a-girl-can-have-without-taking-her-clothes-off

Final design: 1closer

So first of all, I decided to break the quote up into key words to focus the visuals on. So the keys words/phrases are:

Lying, fun, girl and taking her clothes off

After I’ve determined these, I went on to list down visuals I could use to represent those key words.

LYING: Snake, snake tongue hissing, lips

GIRL: Physical body of a woman, woman’s lips, wig

TAKING HER CLOTHES OFF: Lingerie, pile of clothes on the floor

I actually wanted to focus my image on a lady’s wig to represent the girl such as this image:

fccc284c83cbde143ed3b0b249b597db

But I realise that it was tough to incorporate the snake prints into it.

So I decided upon using these images: cdesignvisuals

That’s how I first put together my first design:

c1

But I felt that the mouth was too centralised and dominant, making it very boring and it still lacked an element of ‘fun’.

So I added this visual:

Using the snake’s head and tongue to represent a lady’s tongue sticking out of her mouth to signify the fun. (think Miley Cyrus haha)

miley8

I also used it to de-centralise the mouth so it made it more dynamic. This also shifted the visual weight (which was the mouth) to the right and the tongue towards the right-hand direction makes your eyes move from the left to right on the overall design, creating a direction for the line of sight.

Hence, the final result!

This is also the design I chose to have printed on my totebag:

Proud mama.

Yay that’s the end of quote #1!

Quote #2: “I don’t kiss strange men”

closer01

Final Design:

strangemen

I broke up the quote up into key words once again to determine the visuals I wanted to incorporate.

Key words: Kiss, strange, men

KISS: Lips, mistletoe, night, moon, lipstick, heart

STRANGE: animal, con-man (fox? wolf? snake?)

MEN: Suits, figure, wine

I found these following images that I thought could work:

quote2

This was the result of my first draft:

strangemen1

It just kinda looked off?

I think it is because the elements are not linked very well visually, they look very separated and standalone. The circle that the moon shape produces a circle frame that is too much symmetry for the image – hence it was a little boring and doesn’t create visual interest.

So I incorporated 2 new images and removed the visuals that were very standalone such as the heart, wine glass and the mistletoe branch.

Using a wreath of mistletoe, I added a bit more texture around the surrounding of the moon shape, making it less symmetrical as the flowers are not the same throughout. And I used the lips as a visual link for the moon face to the fox’s face. The dots also provided a more textured background to fill in the negative space of the circle.

And hence the final design!

strangemen

Doesn’t the fox so accurately represent ‘strange men‘ though? I love it.

Quote #3: “You think you know someone, and you realise that it’s all been a big lie.”

tumblr_m2li3ghtfw1qmt5mvo1_500

Final design:

shestheman

Once again, breaking down the quote, here are my key words:

Know someone, realise, big lie

KNOW SOMEONE: exposed – almost naked lady, revealing – unzipping

REALISE: Brain, lightbulb, snapping of fingers

BIG LIE: Snake, tongue, fox

Visuals I used:

quote3

I wanted to do an unzipping of the brain to symbolise the ‘realisation’ and the girl who is wearing very little (like just underwear) to symbolise the revealing of the person.

So I came up with something like this:

shestheman

The leading lines that makes your eyes look from the top left (where the lady is) down to the bottom right (where the end of the zip is).

It’s as though it was a realisation to the brain that the girl turned out to be a snake (big lie). – link to quote!

But the negative space at the top left corner that I felt drew too much attention away from the line of sight that starts from the lady and down to the snake and to the unzipping of the brain.

So I decided to add a bit of gradient to add towards the visual of the leading lines. And I feel that this helped the entire design to meld together better as well.

shestheman

And hence this final design!

Quote #4: “Every opportunity has a shelf life.”

burlesque2-copy

Final design:

opportunity

The key words in this quote are:

Opportunity, shelf life

OPPORTUNITY: grabbing hands, doors, pyramids

SHELF LIFE: milk, decomposing, weeds, mould

Visuals used:

burlesque

This was what I came up with. I played with the scale as well by making the milk carton my main visual so I made it the largest, the dominant element in this design.

opportunity1

But I felt that the visual was too centralised once again and the milk carton did not blend well with the background. So I changed up the dynamics of the visuals to create the final design:

opportunity

I added a melted texture to the milk carton to simulate the decomposing feeling of the carton. And shifted the image to the side so that it will seem like its growing outwards to the top left side of the image. This gives it the visual weight that will make the design more interesting.

Hence this is the final design!

Overall I feel that this assignment is very eye-opening. It caused me to widen my scope of design by incorporating elements I never thought to use as well. This definitely challenged me to think of objects to relate back to my quote which is not very easy. But I feel that this is essential to my designs and ideas as well. Hence I really am very happy to have embarked on this journey for Project 2 as it expanded my design skills and perspective.

Project 2 Research: Quotes

QUOTE #1:

lying-is-the-most-fun-a-girl-can-have-without-taking-her-clothes-off“Lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off…”     – Closer

One of my favourite quotes from one of my favourite movies of all time. The moment the project was announced, this was the quote that kept ringing in my head. I wanted to challenge myself to work on this quote because I think that it doesn’t visually allow for much elements to show for.

QUOTE #2:

closer01

2. “I don’t kiss strange men.” – Closer

I like this quote (also from the same movie) because of the fact that it was at a very ironic moment. And I thought that it was a quote that could allow for very interesting visual elements.

QUOTE #3:

tumblr_m2li3ghtfw1qmt5mvo1_500

“You think you know someone and you realise it’s all been a big lie.”        – She’s The Man

Another quote that resonated very much with me. I love this romantic comedy because it was hilarious and heartwarming as well. This was one of the heartwarming parts before it turned into a hilarious moment again. And the quote really rings true!

QUOTE #4:

burlesque2-copy

“Every opportunity has a shelf life.” – Burlesque

Another quote from another one of my favourite movies. This is one of those quotes that really made one ponder. And I love that. So I decided to create it into a visual for this project assignment.

Stay tuned for the later posts on how it all came out!
