Disclaimer: What you are about to see in this post are 90% sketches and rejected work. You may not be able to decipher what my thought process is my looking at the messy work ( messy happens to be one of the final 4 compositions, coincidence? ).

My normal routine for projects is that I dive straight into some rough sketches of the ideas i have in my mind, before they slip away. So, below is a showcase of some of the initial ideas i had.

1st Wave of ideas

So far these are the ideas I had in the early stages of developing some typography art works. My general approach at first was to draw illustrations that would have the fonts embedded into an image that depicts an actual scene or character… BAD CHOICE. I got so engrossed in creating these illustrations that my attention drifted away from the main focus which is the actual typeface it self!!!

2nd Wave of ideas

The second time i brainstormed for ideas came out like thrash (AGAIN! ). Apparently i couldn’t grasp the concept of typography portrait. What i envisioned seems to be too graphical and literal which is the complete opposite of the projects requirement.

image(3)

After consulting my tutor, i realized that the trick is to settle with the typefaces first and then slowly incorporate elements into the letters itself, giving it some sort of a character that would describe the desired meaning. OH I SEE… …

ITS LIKE A HUMAN PORTRAIT: DRESSING THE HUMAN UP WITH CLOTHES TO DESCRIBE THE OCCUPATION!!!

should be “TYPOGRAPHY’s PORTRAIT”

Drafts and rejected ideas

After I realized my mistake, i decided to take a different approach for my project. I decided not to do illustrations for this project even though it is very much my style to be drawing most of the time, as i feel that there is a lack of consistency and i tend to drift off from the objective. Also, I did not take on the Photoshop route either BECAUSE I SUCK AT IT. I tried though, and you will see some of the works i did thru Photoshop.

What I planned to do afterwards is to take actual photos of various materials that are manipulated to form the fonts.

AT THIS POINT, ANOTHER IDEA CAME INTO MY MIND>>> TO MOUNT THE FINAL 4 COMPOSITIONS INTO AN “INSTAGRAM FEED”.

since they were all going to be photographs, i thought it would be interesting to present my work as actual posts on social network, which is very much treatable to the majority today.

ANYWAYS, I will discuss more about the final outcome in the next post. For now, here are some of the work in progress and rejected ideas i had along this stressful journey…

  INSPIRATION

The last segment of my research is finding inspirations and artworks that are based off typography. I search up google, Pinterest, Instagram and Behance for typographic works that catches my attention for its aesthetics or the message  behind. My focus is to find examples of artworks that do not rely heavily on imagery.

Below are some works I really like.

It’s finally 2016!!! A brand new year, bringing a brand new semester which then brings a new project.Truth to be told,  the title of our first project got me PRETTY STOKED at first and gotten my hopes up. That was until i came to realize that it is not what I thought i it was.

TYPOGRAPHIC PORTRAITS…

Is this what we are supposed to do??

NOPE. Apparently not.

As misleading as it sounds, the project is not about creating portraiture with words ( damn it ) but rather, we were tasked to create font types, with little help of supporting imagery, to “portray” the intended meaning…

… SAY WHUUUT??!!

“MY NAME IS…”

We were supposed to decide on a name to be used in our composition and come up with any occupation or affirmation that we would like to work with.

” My name is (___NAME___) and i am ( ____OCCUPATION/AFFIRMATION_____) .”

So my first step to my research is deciding on the name(s) to be used. My full name is Ong Yi Teck but it has 3 syllabus which is a bit cumbersome to work with and i decided not to use it.

My initial plan was to use my initials, O-Y-T. But along the way, after working with a quite a few designs, I soon realized that the art doesn’t speak to me. It doesn’t capture the essence of my name and i doubt it will leave an impact on the viewers.

Instead, I went with my surname ‘ONG’. It is short and simple. Funny thing is that, during my time in National Service, most of my colleagues are Malays and they had trouble pronouncing my full name. Hence, they addressed me as ‘Ong’ and soon i got used to being called by that name!!!

“… AND I AM …”

After deciding on my name, I then listed out some of my ambitions and hobbies and personalities. At this point, I am not very confident with the list i have because, as much as i want this project to be creative, i wanted it to be an extension of who i am and make it more of a personal work.

Below are some of my thought research in my sketchbook:

FONTS AND TYPEFACES

We all know that are hundreds and thousands of fonts in this world ( just look at the list available on Microsoft words ) and it can be quite daunting to start the project right away without prior knowledge about fonts. Therefore, to find the suitable typefaces for my works, i did some research about fonts.

Basically, fonts can be divided into 4 main groups or typefaces as we know ( Note that there are other typefaces as well) and they are Sans Serif, Serif, Scripts, and Decorative.

Sans Serif

What you are reading now, everything in this post, is typed in Sans Serif typeface. This typeface includes fonts like Helvetica, Avant Garde, Arial, and Geneva

sansserifwebsafe 5 momobo-an-elegant-sans-serif-typeface 2a4ca0f7c0d68fe39caadc1c4f734f6a

Serif

Serif font is basically Sans Serif font with small decorative line added to the characters. The ever so popular font Times New Roman is an example of a serif font.

Script

Script typefaces are based upon the varied and often fluid stroke created by handwriting. They are organized into highly regular formal types similar to cursive writing and looser, more casual scripts.

Decorative

Lastly, we have the decorative font, also known as Ornamental or Display fonts.  They became popular in the 19th century and were used extensively on posters and advertisements because they considered artistic and grabs your attention.1000wDickPape--USFDecorativeLetters-S-2012images (1)

After studying the typefaces available, I had a better understanding to how i should pick my fonts.

This piece of wasteland that you are in, this place that you have gradually accepted as your home, used to be an alluring city that was home for millions. What was once a modern and futuristic landscape,  filled with life and energy, with altitudinous skyscrapers that goes beyond the clouds above, has turned into an unrecognizable ruin with the remains of human creation.10088296_2ac2_1024x2000ruins-05

These mega structures that human have built for the past century have fallen into a state disrepair after the destruction of the war has consumed the entire city. Rubble and debris everywhere, none of the buildings were spared.

And now, survivors are left seeking shelter in any place they could possibly find that has a roof above; from an a old crumbling railway station to the back of an abandoned truck and down to the gaps between collapsed buildings that stacked on top of one another. Nothing is permanent and the survivors will have to make the most out of these architectures for survival.

Everything seems so surreal to you; it is the same place that you have known for the greater part of your life and yet it feels completely different. A place that evokes emotions and allow you to recall memories, the ones that were joyous as well as the ones that were tragic…

Authority within the clan follows a 3 tier hierarchy system with the chief and assistant chief at the top followed by the squad leaders of the respective sections ( i.e. the hunters, the mechanics, the medics, the guards and the educators) and down to the fellow members within each sections. Although, there is a set hierarchy in the community, everyone is considered of equal importance, like a family, and there is no separation of social status.

The system was pretty much set on the first day when the camp was established by the Chief, Johan and the assistant chief, Clifford. Alongside few other survivors, they were the pioneers of the scavengers.  When their hometown was eventually consumed by the the invaders, they had to abandon it and seek refuge elsewhere. That was when they discovered the wasteland.

Johan was appointed the Chief of the clan because he had great leadership in him and he put his life on the line during the war to rescue some of the survivors. Clifford, on other hand, had the intelligence to survival and warfare given his prior career in the military, and Johan wanted him to be his consultant.

As they recruited more survivors as members to their clan, the Chiefs decided that the clan could only function if there is system in place and thus, the 5 different sections were created and each member were assigned specialization.

The story begins in your village, a deserted wasteland filled with nothing but junk and scrap metals. What was once a flourishing metropolitan city with highly developed infrastructures, and a healthy population, is now a land so barren that it can hardly sustain a population of a hundred persons. The war has led you two, alongside the other survivors to the path of survival and together, you all have formed a community named the scavengers. Over the years, the survivors have learnt to work well with one another and developed a sense of trust and belonging in the community. The situation gradually stabilized and people eventually adapted to their new lives.photo

Like any other day, it started with the daily briefing by the clan leader, Johan where he would prepare the members on the mission for the day ( gathering food resources ) as well as providing the health status of the clan.sep0209b

He makes a point to reiterate the importance of unity within the Scavengers before dismissing the members for their work. You then went straight to the maintenance room and the armory to withdraw your weapons and equipment for the hunt.

Today is Kairo’s first day attached to a hunting squad. He was previously assigned as a mechanic and had spent most of his time repairing the hoverboards, the racers as well as maintaining the weapons in the armory. One of Alex’s squad member has reported sick and so, Kairo was sent in as a replacement for the day.

Alex assembles his hunting squad and then they take off in his racer, off they go to the forested area right outside the wasteland. Kairo is seating at the back seat, having mixed feelings about his first expedition out of camp site. The rest of the squad members inside the racer are engaged in their own conversations and it seems like no one noticed Kairo’s presence, except for Alex. He takes a glance at his rear view display to check on this kid that he has never met before, despite being in the community as long as Kairo did. At that moment, Kairo happens to make eye contact with Alex through the mirrors and … …

What are your first impressions you have for the opposite party ( i.e. suspicion, skepticism, etc. ) or what are some of the thoughts you have?

Note: This will affect the eventual gameplay so just play as the character that you have created 🙂

After years of research and studies, humans have finally found the answer to sustainable transportation; gone are the days of using fossil fuel powered cars, trucks and buses. Hover boards is now a reality and it has become the default mode of transport for humans.

hoverboard_model

Over the years, a breakthrough in battery technology has allowed scientists to contain large amount of energy into a spherical casing that fits palm size. This new form of battery were labelled as the Orbs. When it finally reached maturity, the technology was ready for mass production and distributed to consumers and it eventually replaced electricity as the main source of energy.

energy_ball_by_bunny177

With this new form of energy, humans had to rethink the concept of transportation. To take advantage of the portability of the orbs, a new kind of transport was invented: the Hover boards. The core concept behind this vehicles is inspired by the conventional skateboard that is fully automated and could travel across all terrains including water, snow and dirt.

When an orb is placed within the hover board itself, the transformer inside will extract the energy from the orb and power the thrusters, enabling the board to lift itself off the surface. The rider controls the board using his/her feet. There is an in-built control on the board that allows the rider to maneuver in whichever direction. The latest revision of these hover board is able to travel at maximum speed of 100km/h and could easily last an entire day of travel on a single orb.

Aside from these hover boards, alternate forms of transport include the racers ( the car equivalent ) and the vessels ( the train equivalent ). These modes of transportation utilizes the same source of energy, the orb to power and it has the benefit of carrying more than 1 passenger. That being said, The Hover boards have become the preferred choice of transport, for its portability and the speed.

In the year 2116, a great war broke out between man and machines…

There was a time when man and technology lived harmoniously, for one entity cannot do without the other; Humans needed technology for work while technology needed humans to operate and mature through its infancy. They were inseparable. In the search of Utopia,  scientists have spent the last hundred years building upon and perfecting technology, investing all the resources they had into it, hoping that one day it will be the solution to all the violence and inequality in this world, that one day it will be the key to bringing humanity.

World-Map-Hi-Tech-Wallpaper-for-Desktop

They were wrong. What we have created was something far beyond our imagination. Technology became so powerful, that it became destructive and humans could no longer control it. The first ever autonomous robot, The O.N.E  was a prototype created as a peacekeeper in warzones. That machine, however, gone rogue and annihilates everything around him. It was later known as THE DESTROYER.

motorola-droid-eye

The highly complex intelligence that was originally programmed in it has gave the destroyer cognitive abilities that surpass human beings. Soon after, was able to manipulate every aspect of the technology on earth and breathed life to the humanoids. These humanoids were a population of highly sophisticated  and intelligent robots tasked to eliminate mankind and conquer planet Earth. The war lasted decades, wiping out a huge part of the human population and  left us seeking refuge in the remote areas across the Earth, hiding from terror…

journalintroscn002

You are one of the remaining humans left in this world forced into refuge. You belong to this tribe named the Scavengers  and you guys have settled in a deserted wasteland. This community has a small population of 121 members. During the day, members of the tribe would set out in search of materials that were left behind from the war and also to hunt for food for survival. Children were trained to do basic combat in preparation for the fight against the humanoids, in case they ever get spotted while venturing in the deserted area. Right now, the wasteland is peaceful and quiet. It has been 3 years since the last sighting of a humanoid and life carries on as usual.

So here we are! The final project for the semester ( it’s bitter sweet, I know ). I must say that it was quite an extraordinary journey since the very beginning; from learning the elements of designs to the principles of design, traditional drawing to digital art and finally from gray scale to colors. Throughout the semester, i have definitely learnt a lot about designs and it is time to put what i have learnt into practice with the final project. But most of all… we had fun 🙂

THE PROJECT

The theme for our third and final assignment is entitled ‘Ego’. The focus of this project is for us to express our personalities and character in the form of mathematical equations through the use of imagery and more importantly, colors. In the previous posts, we have explored the concept of colors and how each color and the various combinations of colors has a certain meaning or attribute associated to it. With the knowledge of the color schemes, we can then pitch our ideas visually.

There are 4 Equations, consisting of 12 images in total. The 4 equations should be describing ‘me’, ‘a better me’, ‘an ideal me’ and ‘me in 5 years’ respectively.

 MY APPROACHimage(2)

When I first received this assignment, I was pretty much lost because the project was opened to our own interpretation. Generating of ideas has always been a weakness for me as i feel that i lack imagination. A lot. The infinite possibilities of the type of styles that we can use made the project much more challenging.

I had to find a way to incorporate some kind of colors and symbolism into my usual working style ( realistic gray scale drawings ) so that the equations would make sense. Fortunately, the first approach that struck me happened to be the final concept for my end product. However, there were a lot of changes to the execution along the way.

I started thinking about the term ego and what ego actually it means. From my research, Ego is defined as the consciousness of your own identity, knowing exactly who you are as a person. And looking back at the equations given… THE ANSWERS WERE RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME!!!

ME

A better ME

An ideal ME

ME in 5 years

Get the point?

All the equations has a ‘ME‘ in it, which made so much sense since the project is on Ego and what better way to present yourself than A SELF PORTRAIT!

Therefore, my approach is to generate 4 equations that terminates in a quarter of my face and eventually showing the entire face when thee 4 equations are pieced together… confuse? go ahead and see the images below.

Rough 1st sketch of the final layout

STAGE 1: KNOWING WHO YOU ARE

SUCCESS is not possible without PLANNING. So, let us start by having a clear idea of what we are working with. Firstly, i identified some of the traits that defines me and have them arranged into possible equations. For example, for the equation of me, i felt that i am an observer than a participant. Also, due to my calm and reserved nature, i prefer to listen than to speak ( You can confide in me. Just saying ). Hence, my first sentence would be ‘Observe’ + ‘Listen’ = ‘Me’.

I repeated this process of analysis and the generation of equations to ensure that i came up with the personalities that best describe me and i feel confident in executing.

image(1)

STAGE 2: VISUALS

From there, after i have picked the equations ( not finalized at that point ), i came up with some drawings/sketches to visualize my concept. I chose to vary my subject matter and not have a common theme because it seems to fit my style better. Also i did some sketching of what i might include into the mosaic of my self portrait so that the equations link up better.

image

As you can see from the right side of the page of my journal, the idea of a combined portrait was derived when i was exploring all the various aspects of myself.  I imagined a completed portrait that is a collective outcome of the 4 equations. Furthermore, i looked into the possibility of having it drawn thru the use of combining typography with stippling technique, which is a style that i am accustomed to.

Sketch26121734

Initial idea of an ideal me: Drawing X Time

Sketch261213457(1)

Initial Idea of Me in 5 years: The one X Dog

As seen above, my initial sketches had very different subject matter. It is not entirely abstract in terms of shape and form but i was going for an aesthetic where the subject conveys the meaning of my personality in an indirect way.

STAGE 3: COLOURS

For a person who does most, if not all his works in gray scale/achromatic color scheme, managing colours for the final project is pretty daunting. Even after researching about the types of colours, the types of colour schemes, i do not feel confident in handling colours still. Hence, i chose to stick with a complementary colour schemes for the thumbnails. The furthest i would go is to try a triad color scheme.

One of the greatest change in terms of decision of colours is the exclusion of colors in the final portrait. At first, I had an intention of incorporating colours that i like as well as colours that suits my personality into the background (shown below)

Sketch250121042

Sketch25011560 Testing colours for the background

IMG_20151025_120203

That being said, I DITCHED THAT IDEA. I felt that the use of colors in this fashion looks rather distracting and is not something that i am comfortable working with. I made a conscious decision to make the bulk of my project (the portrait) gray scale so that it compliments my style of work and i will leave the colors to the rest of the thumbnails.

STAGE 4: FINAL IDEAS

After much struggles with the generation of ideas and the mixing of colors, i have came up with the finalized designs that i am satisfied with and chose the appropriate colors. Everything has a meaning behind it and in this segment of my journal, i will be sharing some of the thoughts and short stories that these images were derived from.

image(5)

The first equation: ME

A mentioned earlier, personally, i am a reserved, calm and peace-loving person. I am not aggressive nor am i spontaneous: i simply blend into my surroundings and avoid change as much as possible. When i am in a big group of people, i tend to speak less and just hear what others have to say. Therefore, to sum up my personality into the equation of ME, i am an observer and a listener.

To express the idea of an observer, i drew a man in a classy suit with an owl’s head as a way to symbolize my reserved self and the glowing eyes would imply observation. I did a complementary color scheme for this. I retained the natural brown color of the owl and have a teal colored background. The cool color matches my calm character.

I drew an elephant with a  pair of headphones on to represent my listening self as i thought that these two objects really complemented each other to convey the meaning directly. Furthermore, headphones do play an important role in my life on a daily basis. I never leave my room without my audio equipment, just in case i need it in a noisy environment or when i feel like escaping from reality for a brief moment. I used green for the background because it represents the peaceful character in me. The red headphones compliments the green to make it stand out better.

The second equation: AN IDEAL ME

For the ideal me, i would like to let the viewers know my passion for art and my aspirations to be an influential animator, if possible. I feel that i can draw decent but i lack the creative juices because i am so accustomed to drawing off references.  Therefore, an ideal me would be me being skillful in my crafts multiplied by the endless ideas that exist in the world. I will then be able to come up with really unforgettable animated characters like the people in Disney and Dreamworks. That will be so cool… isn’t it?

For skillfulness, i got inspired by the comic character, the wolverine. He had this claws that grew out of his hands which were originally bones but eventually became metal claws which made his far stronger than he was. Therefore, i want to be like that:  started unrefined, weak and end up stronger than who i was. I replaced the claws with the tools that i would normally use for my art so that people could relate it with my passion for art. This drawing was done in a basic triad color scheme. I like how to red shows that eagerness and passion in me.

Ironically, i had no idea on how to generate an imagery for the thumbnail that represents idea. Silly but true. I went with a more direct approach for it by fusing a light bulb and a human brain together placed inside a human’s head. Brains and bulbs are often associated with ideas and thinking so it is quite easy to identify the message behind it. Again, i used the complimentary colors of pink and yellow to create a contrasting look.

image(3)

The third equation: A BETTER ME

To achieve a better me is quite simple: staying focus and cut down on my distractions. I feel that i am a person who lacks motivation easily and have short attention span. I feel this strong attachment to the social networks even though i am not a highly sociable person in the real world. Hence, I spent a chunk of my time scrolling through feeds even when there is nothing that concerns me. How weird!

To depict focus as an image, i went with a drawing of a human eye with a dart board as the pupils. It follows a similar design philosophy with the one i did for ‘Listen’, by combining two different elements that share a commonality to enhance the meaning. In this case, an eye would suggests sight and the dart board would suggests a target/ goal. By combining the two objects together, it shows that i am setting sight on what i want to achieve and stay focused on it. I did not apply a particular color scheme to this as the natural color scheme of a dart board is red and green which already compliments one another.

For distractions, it would be about my love-hate relationship with my smartphone and the social networks. I drew the display of an iPhone and on the screen there are icons of the commonly used social apps with an uninstall badge on it, indicating that i want to get rid of it to achieve a better me. Pretty straightforward actually.  To bring forth the impression that the social networks are actually a distraction, i chose the color purple for the background, a color associated with negativity and fear.

The last equation: ME IN 5 YEARS

I am not a person with is farsighted, adventurous nor a risk taker. I like to do things at my own pace and observe gradual progress. 5 years is a relatively short time and i do not see myself as a complete different person that went through drastic change. Me in 5 years would, realistically, be a person who is down to earth, leading a normal life, in pursuit of my career. Therefore, the equation that would best describe how i see myself in half a decade is: Career + Partner = Me in 5 years.

A career to me represents the longest phase of any man. A man lives and dies by his career, be it for money or for passion. And to me, it is like an opening of a new chapter. Hence, i chose the evolution of a cocoon to a butterfly to represent it. The cocoon reflects my transition from university life to work life and the butterfly is a new me ready to face the challenges ahead. The blue and orange complimentary color scheme fits the before and after of myself.

Lastly, I would really hope to bump into ‘the one’ in 5 years time ( the sooner the better, of course). What is success when you have no one to share it with. Furthermore, i am a family-loving guy and my greatest hope is to have a family of my own. That, to me, is the greatest blessing in life. I represented myself and ‘her’ as shoes; me being a blue male sneakers and ‘her’ being the pink shoe. I added yellow to the background to form a triad color scheme, which adds hope and joy to the happy moment, which i hope to see it someday 🙂

image(4)

So this is it. Ego.

A person who observes than participates, listens than speaks.

A person who needs to focus more and be distracted less.

A person who aspires to be an astounding artist one day.

and last of all…

A person who stays true to himself, stay humble and finds that happiness he yearns for.

BASIC COLOR SCHEMES

Essentially, color schemes are the ways we manipulate various colors by means of adjusting the tint, shade and saturation to achieve a certain aesthetic. It could also be done by the means of ‘match-making’ the colors based on its characteristics.

There are 7 types of basic color schemes (“Relationships”) to choose from:
  • Achromatic: No color—just blacks, whites and greys
  • Monochromatic: Different shades and depths of a single color
  • Secondary: Green, purple and orange used together
  • Complementary: Complementary or opposite colors from the color wheel
  • Split Complimentary: Three colors—the main color and colors from either side of its complement
  • Triad: Three colors from equidistant points on the color wheel
  • Analogous: The main color and the colors from either side of it on the color wheel

Achromatic

Achromatic basically means without colors. It deals with tonal values that range from Black (darkest) to Grey (middle) to White (lightest). Achromatic or gray-scale images often introduce a somber, emotional vibe.

DCF 1.0

Monochromatic

Mono means single, Chroma means color. Monochromatic color scheme deals with a single color/ hue across various shades. It adds contrast as well as rhythm/ flow to  a picture.

law_purplesky_2013-3-15

Secondary

Well, self-explanatory. Secondary colors of purple, green and orange are used in a Secondary color scheme. However, it is ideal that the shades of the 3 colors match evenly.

download (1)

Complementary

This color scheme involves matching a primary color with the secondary color opposite to it on the color wheel. E.g. Blue with Orange ( my favorite pair of complimentary colors)

6849852-serene-backgrounds

Split Complimentary

What do you get when you introduce a third-party in to a relationship? … Never mind!

Split complimentary color scheme introduces a color and two other colors that are directly adjacent to the first color’s complement on the color wheel. E.g. Red, Yellow-Green and Blue-Green

ab0113-2

Triad

The three musketeers. This color scheme makes use of three colors that are equally spaced from each other on the color wheel, forming a equilateral triangle in the color wheel.

35e15__triadic-kids-room

Analogous

Happy neighbors indeed.

An analogous color scheme is created by pairing colors that appear side by side on the color wheel. E.g.purple, blue and green
