A visit to STPI

The recent visit to the Singapore Tyler Print Institute (STPI) marked the start of my experience to art exhibitions. Though short, the visit was truly insightful and meaningful. We were fortunate to be given a tour around the area where we were exposed to various printing techniques as well as the machinery involved. The tour was kicked off with the introduction of different printing methods such as lithography, intaglio and screen printing.

I in particular found Lithography to be really interesting as it is printing based on the immiscibility of oil and water. The image is first drawn with oil or fat onto a flat stone then treated with acid to etched parts not protected by the grease. An oil-based ink is then used which sticks to the original drawing, releasing the image when transferred to a paper.

After the tour, we were able to roam around to appreciate the display of Zao Wou-Ki’s works.

It was satisfying to be able to view what was ‘taught’ in the form of a final art piece. What I really appreciate was his choice of leaving his works untitled so as to allow his audiences to have their own interpretations.

All in all, my first visit to an art museum has been nothing short of amazing.
