After I try several ways of composing the images, I decided to apply ‘negative space’ and ‘depth of field’ to my works.

For negative space, I researched for the works done by Shigeo Fukuda.

Shigeo Fukuda (福田 繁雄 Fukuda Shigeo?, February 4, 1932 – January 11, 2009) was a sculptor, graphic artist and poster designer who created optical illusions. His art pieces usually portray deception, such as Lunch With a Helmet On, a sculpture created entirely from forks, knives, and spoons, that casts a detailed shadow of a motorcycle.

From Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shigeo_Fukuda

I also researched for other works about the negative space.

At the same time, I searched for Tao Shiren’s work. He is good at illustrating 3-dimensional like graphic works by using different values.

…and also, street artist 1010.

So, for my final product, I combined the two principles together: first, I use negative space to make a frame for my work:

Then, inside the ‘frame’, I use color halftone to create the depth of field for my work, to make it looks more interesting.

Also, I tried to make all my designs symmetrical.

Reflection:

After doing this project, I realized that it is important for a designer to understand the design principles and make good use of them. At first, I did a lot of random work, but I realized that they were not uniform in styles and could not tell the story well. Also, I realize that it is important to choose the right symbols. At first, I chose a horse to represent the fair lady. But a horse could not represent the lady in common sense, So it could not tell the story well. After learning about that, I decided to use sheep instead of horses to represent the man’s dream as it is commonly believed that ‘sheep’ have something to do with ‘sleep’.
