Creative Industry Report: QimmyShimmy

QimmyShimmy is also known as Lim Qi Xuan, is a graduate from NTU ADM  (with a specialisation in Visual Communications). She professional graphic designer by day and a sculpture of polymer clay figurines by night. The latter is what she is most known for; she incorporates human body parts into everyday objects, creating an interesting juxtaposition between both elements.

Baby heads in calm and cockle shells
Baby heads as lollipops in a jar

For example, she is aware that baby heads garner a sense of vulnerability and cuteness. She is, however, willing to take this subject out of context and push it to a place of unfamiliarity, to the point where people might even be uncomfortable. She describes this as giving people a new and interesting encounter, through her artwork.

Her food series: Baby heads on an ice cream cone

Her works showcase great skill and talent. This is also evident in her works that have become solo art exhibitions, travelling to various places like New York and Prague. However, due to the nature of her sculptures, there are many who have used negative language to describe her work: “disgusting”, “horrid” and “freak show” are amongst some of the rude comments. Despite this, Qi Xuan is not discouraged. She instead enjoys reading the hate comments she receives, mentioning how it offers a different perspective and welcomes the criticism by saying I would rather make art that people can love or hate than make something that nobody ever talks about”.

This shows Qi Xuan’s open-mindedness that allows any opinion or perspective to help her improve as a creator. She wants to grow as an artist and welcomes any kind of feedback, even the negative ones that many artist might tend to shy away from. She is comfortable with letting people talk about her work so that she gains new perspectives and insights.

This is also evidently seen in how she does not give deep descriptions or diverge the public in personal meanings to her work when engaging in interviews. She says that she would rather give her audience the space to come up with their own interpretation, so that they are able to relate to her work on a more personal level. She does not want her own artistic opinion to cloud their own experience towards her work. This allows her audience to connect deeply with her work as well.

In my opinion, this shows the boldness and sureness that Qi Xuan has as an art creator. She is sure of her own artistry such that others’ opinions will not affect her. Through her willingness to grow, it also shows her passion towards her art; there are definitely many things to learn from Qi Xuan.

Task 3 Deliverable I: Activity Book

Final

High def PDF version:  Final activity book

Screenshots:

Translucent page that goes above the page above

Pictures

Process

This was an activity book designed to help ease those who struggle with anxiety. It relies heavily on using music to help soothe anxiety (research + my survey results shown that music is a widely used solution in effectively conquering anxiety). Participants can scan the QR code to the selected music pieces in the book whilst participating in various activities designed to calm themselves down and to allow for expression of thoughts to free their mind.

Here were some of the rejected pages:

Title Page:

First attempt: The rainbow lines are too messy, should lead better to the girl. The girl’s position doesn’t communicate freedom in inhaling
This looks a little too bottom heavy + could try alternative ways to communicate better freedom

End Page:

Girl’s position doesn’t convey exhale; could try changing her position like making her fly in the air

Intro page:

I decided that there needed to be instructions to tell people what to do when they scanned the QR code so I added a girl at one of the sides but this was the

House on a hill:

Draft 1: Text too much in the middle
Draft 2: Should change colour of the background/ add some markings to indicate what should be done in the activity

Middle page:

Doesn’t convey the idea of peace and looks very different from the other pages. The use of lines are too strong.

Stars:

Draft 1: Feedback was that the entire page should flow together because it looks too stagnant at the moment
Draft 2: Stars should be of different sizes to make composition more interesting

Northern Downpour:

I removed the igloo because it felt like it took up too much space in the activity book already. I also reduced the snow so the white boxes behind the text could be removed and the text can then be seen more easily

Steps of progress (last page)

Draft 1:

The feedback was that the fonts shouldn’t be in the middle as problems could arise during printing

Draft 2:

I played around with the orientation of the elements so I could incorporate the text at the side. However when I showed this to my friends, they said how the entire graphic was a little confusing and doesn’t really convey progress. When I printed this out for testing, the lines were also too big for the page and hence I scraped this idea

Process

This website was designed to compliment the activity book (my first deliverable) and to allow those struggling with anxiety to branch into self-expression. The medium that I chose to focus on was songwriting, since I focused a lot on the aspect of music in my activity book as well.

These were the initial weeks of process:

The above 3 images were before I decided to branch more into the direction of music. They were just general illustrations on anxiety for a general website to calm people down +make them feel less alone:

This was the first draft for the website:

Second draft:

The feedback was that the background colour runs down the webpage is a little messy; there should be some shape to them. The fonts used together are also distracting. It was in this consult where we also discussed adding additional pages to compliment the website.

Third draft:

I almost used this as my final but I felt like the background was a little messy and looked unfinished, so I decided to simply change it to lines instead.

In figuring out which platform to put this on, I initially wanted to use tumblr and created a website for it:

https://songwritingtherapy.tumblr.com/

However, the aspect coding was a bit of a problem and I could only upload the wireframe picture on the site. In the end, I just went with invision instead.

Applied Illustration Research + Initial Ideation

I was really excited to start on this project after hearing about the brief 😀

Here were some of my initial ideas:

  1. The dreamers party:

A party for one to share your dreams and what one sees in their dreams.

The idea I am going for more  is a child-like style that is at the same time catered for adults.

Illustrations would include more of magical animals/creatures that you will meet in your dream (Eg. unicorns with 5 horns dancing, dinosaurs with multiple heads, whales with a few eyes but all with a magical elemental touch like stars or clouds).

Collaterals:

  1. dreamer’s notebook/journal
  2. eye mask (sleeping do not disturb zzz)
  3. pyjamas (patterned illustration)
  4. wine bottle
  5. invitation card/drawstring bag
  6. character cards

2. Songwriter’s costume party:

Human musicians dressed in weird animal costumes whilst holding their instruments like in Taylor Swift’s we are never ever getting back together music video:

Collaterals:

  1. backstage pass card
  2. ticket to entry (mimics concert ticket)
  3. vinyl album cover
  4. guitar
  5. band tee shirt
  6. beer bottle
  7. food wrapper

This is basically a music event but combined together with food.

This was one of my main ideas that I was thinking of developing so here’s my Initial sketch:

However, this idea did not really work out in the end. Lisa also suggested that maybe there was too many things going on in one illustration so I decided to not go with this idea in the end.

3. The stay up til sunrise party:

-People who stay up late and are night owls, but also because they like to watch the sunrise

-Neon colour illustrations, whacky faces of the people due to being too drunk and wide-eyed

Owls that are people /half owls, half people

  1. Beer bottles
  2. Toothpicks packaging (to prick your eyes open)
  3. Paper bag for throwing up in
  4. Invitation card/ party access entry pass
  5. Poster

4. Underwater music festival:

I got this idea from randomly watching this video on youtube and thought it was funny HAHAHA.

-Draw weird instruments that look like a fish (etc) or corals and people wearing snorkelling outfits playing them (eg. mermaid tail; combining sea creatures into instruments)

-Combining the idea of a party with underwater theme + music

  1. Souvenir bottled water
  2. Snorkling mask
  3. Instruments with corals
  4. Coral headgear

5. Jumping off a plane whilst there are fireworks in the sky- event

-for people that are crazy dare devils

  1. Parachute
  2. Light stick
  3. Plane ticket
  4. Mini aeroplane

In the end, I decided to go with my very first idea! I started researching on some inspirations/ on artists who have a unique drawing style:

This is one example of her work and I like how she uses different and uniquely vibrant colours to craft her animal designs. They are also very stylised.

Patterned illustration. Useful for one of the pieces I intend to do

She is a freelance illustrator who too has a very distinct illustration style. She uses colour very well! Her style is a little cartoon-y yet it is not childish, and its something I really wish to incorporate for my own illustrations!

She is a graphic designer and she designed this card during one of the christmases for skull candy.  I really liked how the moose is so whacky in this illustration and really conveys a message of humour and fun! This is something I also wish to achieve in my illustrations.

  • More animal character examples:

These animals are drawn rather realistically and yet they have the mythical traits being incorporated as well. These are references I would like to take into account whilst designing my own characters.

Okay I guess its now time to begin designing! 😀

Applied Illustration Process (2/2)

COLLATERALS

The initial collaterals that I was going to do included:

  1. Dreamer’s notebook/journal
  2. Eye mask
  3. Pyjamas (patterned illustration)
  4. Wine bottle label
  5. Character cards

Here were some of my attempts:

Wine bottle label

The feedback for this was that the name of the wine firstly did not suit the overall feels of the

Attempted poster

Hahahah this was way too cluttered ;-; It was here where I realised it was going to be hard to combine all my characters into one poster and had to design them as separate collaterals.

Attempted pattern illustration

The feedback for this was that its too centralised and should be messed up a little for the overall design to be more interesting.

After some discussion with Lisa, she mentioned that maybe it was more fun to do x4 wine bottle labels instead. And after emailing her, we decided that the nature of my designs looked better on cider/juice bottles instead of wine (which had a more sophisticated feel to it).

So I decided to turn my wine labels into labels for a magic potion-like drink. Its basically a juice drink that has a magic potion vibe HAHA. Thought this added to the whimsical and fun feeling of my theme.

I initially wanted to use silver for all of the colours of the bottle but I decided it was too boring and decided to make the liquids colourful. So I used watercolour to mix around the colours a little:

Experimental testing of mixing colours

I wanted to find a good colour balance that would not take the attention away from the actual labels itself. Eventually I settled for these colours:

You can refer to my final post here to see the final outcome 😀

Applied Illustration Process (1/2) and Final

The final theme I decided to go with was a Dreamer’s Party .This theme focuses on the types of mythical-like animals that people tend to see in their dreams.

Here were some initial sketches and drawings:

Rough and messy ideations on what animals I would like to combine to form new mystical creatures

The main style that I was going for was child-like but not childish. I wanted to still be able to reach adult audiences despite the fact that the subject I was designing could possibly swing more towards children.

Here were some references I was inspired by:

Designing the characters

Initial character designs:

The feedback given was that they didn’t look like one set 🙁 I strongly agreed and the suggestion given was to try incorporate the same colours in every character. For instance, to have the same turquoise that I had in the whale to be incorporated into the other animals as well.

It was in this time of the assignment where it was announced that we only needed 4 items instead of 5, so I removed the owl guy because he was the hardest to fix in terms of making it more like a set (like the illustration style seemed a bit different also sobbles so yeah made my life easier and removed him).

Here was my finalised characters after improvement:

Label Designs

After some discussion (process for how I decided on designing 4 labels is in this process post), I decided to stick with designing 4 different labels for a magic-potion-like juice drink.

One of the feedback given was to give a more interesting name to the drinks instead of simply naming it like “dreamer’s wine”, for example.

Because of my concept, I wanted to make sure that my labels were not too
kiddish” looking as well. Thus, I went to look at some references on other cider/beer designs that incorporate animals with a fun+vibrant feel and yet could pull their designs off well:

This illustration example is for wine but I thought it was done very well too

Overall, the examples were designs that were colourful, vibrant and fun, and yet did not compromise on the overall aesthetic of branding the drink. This was something I was going for.

So here were my first round of label designs:

The feedback given for this was that the font choice was wrong and gave it a tom-and-jerry feel to it (HAHA oh no). I should also consider centralising the images on my labels so that when printed on the bottle, it won’t be slanted.

After editing the pattern designs + fonts, here are my final labels:

Final Labels

Magic potion juice bottles

After shaking the bottles (glitter effect)

I also made stickers to paste on the caps of the glass bottles, to complete the look:

Alcoholic Bottles

I know my labels are generally targetted at juices but I threw in the alcoholic bottle part because I still liked my initial idea of designing wine for people at the party so they could drink a lot of it and just crash to have a good night rest later on, yknow? HAHA.

Reflections

I think this project was a lot of fun, but it turned out to be a lot more challenging then I expected :/ HAHAHA because I really had to consider the overall branding of the event I was organising for. I didn’t really have a go-to illustration style that was easily recognisable and hence had to come up with one and make sure that I stuck to it (if not everything will just turn out very different).

Other challenges I faced were deciding on the colours for both the animal characters and the juice labels. I needed to make sure that they were contrasting yet did not contrast too much + each of the colours matched the overall set of the 4 labels.

Ideation stage was also a bit of a problem initially as I wasn’t very comfortable with drawing animals in general so I was a bit hesitant to do this topic. But I am glad I decided to step out of my comfort zone hehe because drawing animals can be a lot of fun!

I was also glad I decided to step out of my comfort zone in terms of choosing which platform to illustrate this project on. Previously, I did all my illustrations on ipad procreate because I always had this fear with using photoshop to draw. I just had some impression that it was hard. However, for this project, I decided to try unmarked territory and did digital painting in photoshop for the first time! Turns out it wasn’t so bad HAHAHA yay I can use it for my future projects too.

Overall, I learnt the importance of consistency in branding. Trying to form a series of illustrations into a set was one thing I struggled with the most because I always tend to do very diverse styles. However, I am glad I got to learn how to better understand this and can say that I am slowly getting better at this woohoo :’)

Well, I guess this marks the end of the module (and the semester as well woohoo). I have indeed learnt a lot about illustration in the aspect of design and communicating my ideas. Even though stepping out of my comfort zone was hard at first (this is the first time I did so much digital painting hahaha), I am glad I got to learn the skills I learnt from this module.

My family of all 4 bottles! :> Casual picture I took for my friend and thought it looked nice so I decided to put it in here as well
The end woohoohoo~

Assignment 2: VAROOM process and final

Here is the process for my empathy illustration titled The King who lost his Kingdom and his people all turned into Slaves (hahaha okay there was no need for a title but I decided why not)

The concept for this piece was just to illustrate on a king who lost his kingdom. He was sad as he had lost everything he had + all his beloved people had turned into slaves. I was hoping that this would allow the audience to think deeper about the prospect of losing something and what that truly feels like, linking to my theme of empathy as well.

The initial idea for this was to have the king look down from his castle and for him to be able to watch his people become slaves (looking from above and watching them crawl with shackles on their ankles, for instance).

These were some of my initial thumbnail sketches:

King turned into a snake because he was the one who caused his kingdom to fall; so maybe he was secretly evil
the king who couldnt reach his castle anymore because he lost it; it is now locked up in a jar
the king thinking about his kingdom he once had
the king who was sad and wanted to fight for his kingdom again
the king watching his people turn into slaves

This was one of the pencil comp sketches that I was initially working on as well:

However, as I was drawing this and having a conversation with my friend on the phone, I started sharing about this assignment that I was doing and she suggested that maybe I could try take this from a more interesting perspective by drawing it from the king’s hands instead of approaching it as an overall scene.

I thought that was quite genius so I drew this thumbnail sketch:

and further developed the idea:

What I submitted for in-class critique

The concept for this was for the king to be holding his kingdom as it melts in his hands onto his people that are now slaves. In order to show that the person holding the castle was a king, I intended to add jewellery/royal colours

The feedback for this was that the castle looked like a sandcastle and that maybe I could have the castle melt like sand slipping through the king’s fingers.

So I started designing:

Mood board

Design inspirations:

Juan Esteban Rodríguez:

I was hugely inspired by a markering-like style and wanted to try replicate it for the cover.

Draft 1
I was following the mood board colour scheme but I didn’t really like it so I changed it
Draft Two/Three
2: A less subtle slave background
3: A more obvious slave outline

The feedback I got from group critique was that the transition from the colours to the dark portion looked incoherent. Lisa also suggested to try adding more brown tones to the sandcastle and to only start transitioning the colour about 3/4 the page. For further improvement, it was also suggested for the overall sandcastle to be bigger and for the slaves to be more subtle + to try shading them with more brown tones instead of black tones (like in my reference photos above).

Draft four

I emailed this to Lisa and she suggested to add more detailing to the sandcastle+ add jewels to the rings + change the barcode to a darker colour so it could be scanned.

Final Outcome

Photoshop Mockup

Reflections

This was a fun assignment to do! It did have its challenges though. One of my biggest challenges was balancing the contrasts between the lighter and darker shades, as well as the transition from the castle to the slaves. I was constantly wondering how much detail is too much detail (also in other details like the rings or the shading of the hands, etc) and had to try my best to strike a good balance between detail and omitting detail.

However, I did learn a lot about editorial illustrations! I realised that a good illustration isn’t just a pretty drawing, but it is one that is able to convey a strong concept, allowing the audience to think deeper and take home a message that can meaningfully connect to each of them.

Overall, I enjoyed this assignment and am looking forward to the final assignment for this module! 🙂

Assignment 2: VAROOM Ideation and Research

What is Varoom?

After doing some research, I found Varoom to be a magazine that greatly supports illustrators and their illustrations. Content wise, Varoom conducts interviews with various illustrators, designers and image-makers as well as having various articles on various contemporary issues.  However, what I find most unique about Varoom is how it allows illustrators to express their unique style and voice without restriction. What I find inspiring is how they allow illustrators the creative freedom to explore what are they passionate in, and do not follow the status quo of the usual magazine content.

VAROOM: inside the magazine

As seen from the inner content of VAROOM, the designs vary from black and white to the use of bright expressive colours. It really made me realise that the sky is the limit for designs in this magazine. It is the kind of magazine that is open to expressing a variety of options, making it fun and interesting. The most important factor about designing for VAROOM is therefore simply having a good concept/idea and developing my illustrations from there.

Henceforth, I realised that their cover goes beyond the surface of simply just being an illustration but adds meaning and depth to the topic they are currently discussing. That is what makes a good editorial design as well.

Target audience

Varoom targets designers, as well as those who are interested in thinking deeper about various design issues, problems and taboos. Its quirky and free content attracts different variety of creatives.

Audience Persona:
Someone who would be interested in VAROOM
Someone who would totally have no interest in VAROOM

After coming up with the audience persona, I realised that because VAROOM targets more mature audiences (not children or young kids, for instance) that enjoys design. My illustration style hence has to be more engaging and less child-like (it was the initial style I wanted to go for.

Design inspirations:
  • James Fenner designed an illustrative piece for Poland State Magazine on the subject of new possibilities for teen foster kids:

I really liked the use of different textures and line weights that really brought the entire illustration to life. Her style of softer lines really suited the theme of foster care as well and I thought this was a good example of using the right illustration style to suit the right theme.

  • Meel Tamphanon designed this illustrative piece of a magazine. She titled her work as “30 year old folks and they behave like adolescents”.

I like how each character is specifically designed to convey a unique personality that brings forth a message to the audience.

Her work also has a distinct style and really leads the audience to think beyond the surface of her illustrations to the real message she is trying to convey.

Ideation stage

Empathy:

  1. play with the idea of loneliness; image of a girl feeling dull on the inside ( black soul, lacking life) but outside, she puts on a mask to act cheery (draw flowers, crown) and being surrounded others who look the same.
  2. play with the idea of how society focuses so much on the exterior and the superficial. And how these things are actually not as important as one’s true inner beauty. as a result of this wrong focus, society becomes dysfunctional. illustrate this with clowns running around with ruined makeup on their faces and tattered clothes in a whimsical landscape (funfair) that is broken down. Can have the clowns be attached to puppet on strings. Have dim lighting and almost seems bleak. can illustrate things that society cares too much about. in the middle is a girl that shines her truest inner self and shines the brightest in the middle but she looks confused as to what is going on, almost asking as if “why is society like this?” and her world is shattered.
a random draft I did

Obsession:

  1. Kinda linked to the above idea except this one is playing more on the obsession side. Play with the idea of having too much fun that it ruins you; using clowns as a central idea and having them have overly big faces in a broken funfair kind of setting; making it whimsical yet its an uncomfortable kind of whimsical. Clowns can be so concerned about having fun it kind of breaks them

Style:

  1. Fashion on the moon; an alien who lives alone but because he is bored, finds inspiration from the rocks/planets to create a fashion runway for himself. This plays with the idea of how when you get lonely and bored, you get creative and maybe that is when you find your own sense of style
  2. How a person styles a room, according to their personality; have the room be interesting and creative

To aid with my inspirations, I came up with more thumbnail sketches in classes (also using more word associations that Lisa had us spin on a website that was really helpful hehe).

Thumbnail sketches:

After consultation, I decided to settle for the idea of empathy as I had some stronger concepts that I could play around with (eg. my clown idea).

Pencil Comp Sketches:
  1. Sad clown:

This first idea idea was centered around a sad clown who had just gone through a breakup and was sitting outside his room crying as he looked out the window to reflect what he had done wrong. I also added a guitar to reference Taylor Swift’s song- Teardrops on my Guitar

2. Clowns invade the city

This second idea was centered around the idea of how society only looks at the surface matter of things and the things that truly matter (like inner beauty) are overlooked. I hence wanted to draw a whimsically dysfunctional city mimicking a broken funfair that has many sad clowns roaming around (in a sort of creepy way hahahah). I would then add a girl who would represent purity and innocence to be in the middle of this city. As she looks out into the city, she feels lost and wonders why has the city become so broken.

3. The king lost his kingdom and his people all turned into slaves

The idea for this was just to illustrate a king who lost his kingdom. He was sad as he had lost everything he had + all his beloved people had turned into slaves.

This was another alternative sketch for the same idea:

After in-class critique, feedback was given that the third illustration was better in terms of conveying my idea as the second one on the clowns that I was initially more inclined to could possibly be a little tricky to illustrate. Hence it was no clowns (awww hahhaha) and I chose this idea!

Check out my next post for the actual process of my cover 😀

Stylised self-portrait

As we embark on assignment 1, we were told to come up with a list of things that represented us. Here were some of the things I came up with:

Music, guitar, introverted that doesn’t like crowds, overthinking, fairy lights, space, travelling, exploring

I also had some initial ideas:

Wrote down some initial ideas

and drew up some rough sketches:

However, after further consideration, I decided I wanted to let the portrait have an overall sense of wonder and dreaminess since my mind always tends to daydream about ridiculous things, as if floating in space. I hence decided to stick with a space theme,  adding elements of music (like a guitar or music notes) since music has been and always will be a big part of my life.

Before starting, I wanted to look to a few references:

  • Fluorescent portraits by Georgia Theologou:

I loved the colour palette in all of these and loved the visual exploration that she did to each piece.  She didn’t use normal colours associated with the human body (Eg. the skin isn’t beige and the hair varied in colours). I admired her bold experimentation and the results are absolutely stunning. For me, they really do give off the space-and-dreamy-wonderland kind of vibe, which was one of the themes I was hoping to pull off in my portrait.

I really liked the artist’s use of different lines weights and textures that really helped to give depth to the illustration. This was something I decided to incorporate and explore in my portrait. Andregaa liked drawing portraits that were imaginative and his good use of colours helped to convey the theme of dreaminess as well. This was something that greatly inspired me.

I really like her bold use of line and colour! It inspires me to be bold as well. I really admire how she can use such different colours but because she knows how to use them well, they are not overpowering and compliment each other.

It was time to start! I decided to go digital as I had never really explored digital painting before. I decided to execute it on my ipad and on the software procreate; what a good time to start using my ipad (had it for 6 months but never really drew on it).

My idea was to draw myself using galaxy-space colours from skin to hair. I wanted my eyes to be looking up, as if daydreaming and for the colour of my eyes to be rainbow to represent wonder. I also had the intention of adding a guitar + a space helmet to complement the entire portrait. Hence, as I was contemplating the composition of my portrait, I  eventually decided that I wanted to do one that focused on my face so that the sense of wonder I hope to achieve on my face can be seen.

I initially used this selfie I took with my friend:

with the intent of making a funny expression for my portrait. However, after about 10 minutes of drafting and sketching:

I decided I didn’t like my facial expression and went to retook another selfie +drew a new draft:

lol I took this right after I got out of bed
Rough sketch

After readjusting the composition, I started on my work and this was the initial draft I brought to class:

Some feedback given:

-Could try using different line weights

-Incorporate guitar better + make it more proportionate to size

-Make face brighter

-Astronaut helmet is not obvious, could try making it see through

-background is too cluttered.

After making some changes and referencing to some astronaut helmet illustration pictures:

Tadaaa this was my final:

I expanded the size of the guitar to make it more proportional, added a space helmet that reflects colours related to my overall theme and incorporated a hand so that the guitar wouldn’t look like it was “simply slapped on”; a feedback I got during the group critique session.

My full process video can be found here:

Reflections:

This was a rather fun yet challenging piece to do. This was relatively my first time exploring digital painting so it was fun to explore the various brushes that were available on procreate. However, I had some difficulty using different line weights for the portrait as I was generally used to just painting (in traditional medium at least) and not combining tools to create art. In terms of colour, I also had to make sure it was not too overwhelming and that the background would not be too overpowering. However, it was overall a very rewarding experience and though I definitely felt I could have done better, I enjoyed coming up with different interesting concepts for this self-portrait. What a good way to start the module 🙂
