4D – Installation on Press Freedom in Singapore

The idea of this project was to highlight how government-controlled the media in Singapore is, this is backed up by the fact that Reporters Without Borders has ranked our country at the 151th position on their Press Freedom Index, behind countries like India, Pakistan and Mexico.

There have been debates about Singapore’s press taking on the role of a fourth estate, which is seen as media that scrutinises the government and keeps them in check; as well as support liberty in press.

  1. I really like how you are tackling this issue and I really like how you utilise an interactive element to bring across the idea. The amount of research you did for this project is also impressive. The touch of adding photos of the boy is brilliant too. It makes everything more real.

My only comment or suggestion is that maybe you could have spend more effort in the choice of materials. For example, the yellow envelop with marker text is a lost opportunity to bring across the atmosphere of how serious this matter is. The print out might also have been better if its printed on newsprint? While you did a good job in carving out the SPH NEWS words, the choice of shiny blue paper for the buttons might not have been the best choice. In my opinion, the overall look and feel of your artwork did not do justice to the research you did, the message you wish to bring across, and the seriousness of this issue.

Nonetheless, I understand that to execute it is also very difficult within the amount of time given. So not to worry too much. Just want you to take note of the usage of material in the future.
