Assignment 2A – Weave (Task 2)

From this project i’ve learnt that weaving is indeed not at all easy. When I first got the material i was still wondering how it was possible to manipulate it into a proper weaving pattern. Then I learnt that soaking it was important to help it bend.

I first tried the octagonal shaped pattern but it was too difficult to hold the sticks in place or create close weaving patterns because the sticks were of a certain thickness. So after trying a few times, I turned to the hexagonal pattern instead.

The good thing about this pattern is that it was better spaced between each stick which made it relatively easier than the octagonal pattern. However, what I didn’t foresee was the need to be every exact in measurements in terms of where I place the sticks as the diagonally placed sticks have to be lined up properly, so that when the horizontal one came in, it fits well.

Another thing I wasn’t too sure was a mistake was forming my diagonally placed sticks first, before slotting in the horizontal stick. Though the tutorial video showed that, the sticks they used were a lot flatter and easier to work with.

While the area in the middle is pretty firm just because of the overlapping sticks, the sticks at the side seem to fall off easily

  1. – Good try with the weave , perhaps better if the ends were held in place by a frame.
    – Good observations on the limitations of the raw material.
