Initial Ideas For This Project
  1. Compilation (nursery rhymes + pov project) based on common subject matters from my past works : animals.

-rhymes (b&w works) transitioned to pov (colourful works)

2. Compilation with improvisations (nursery rhymes)

– adding in particular into the b&w works to evoke/represented a certain mood/feeling/atmosphere

3. New works (typographic portrait problem project)

-using the line work style of illustrations to create a zine on typography

4. Compilation with improvisations (pov project)

– using the content to make a zine focused on the interactivity of it

-inspired from feedback from previous critique

5. New works (pov project)

– using the same style (basic shapes/vectors) and context (singapore) to make a match-word-to-pictures-kind-of-book.

– focused on interactivity

*note:  ideas i choose to explore more on / develop.

Process

Before I started on the illustrations, I researched extensively on all the singlish words used commonly used here in Singapore, followed by narrowing it down the ones that I thought would be more appropriate for my project. (some examples: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B9SxP4EKVfKBV0hZb1BBYnJXc3c)

After that I first tried out making a few illustrations for idea 5( refer to above on initial ideas).

jelly

Tryout of a illustration for word (agar-agar: jelly / rough estimation).

swaku

tryout of illustration for word (swaku-mountain tortoise) with full background/ setting a context.

I tried out two ways of portrayal , one being just focusing on the subject matter itself and the other being set in a context where viewers can find clues/hints from the background/surroundings (perhaps a hint of narrative too).

However, I realised it was hard for me to bring life to this objects that are already representational in real life and from the tryouts, I was not fully pleased with the results. I scraped the idea. Hence, I decided to work on idea 4 instead as I’ve always been more drawn to having many narratives in my works.

Firstly, I reviewed my series of works for the pov assignment and selected the ones that I’d like to use while changing some others for new illustrations.

Untitled-1

For this idea, I was really inspired by this interactive book that Joy gave as feedback from the previous critique.04_SingaporelangBook_Stills_grande-1 05_SingaporelangBook_Stills_grande 08_SingaporelangBook_Stills_grande

Singapore Lang – What the Singlish! Book

I tried out various binding methods for the mock-ups, such as side stapling , saddle stitch with thread and Japanese binding. After consultation, many recommended for the book to be able to be fully-opened for easier user experience.

I decided to work on how my speech bubbles would appear and the meanings. Instead of stickers, which are only for one-time use, I thought of ways that the speech bubbles can be used several times. I thought of using velcro, however, i felt the thickness of the material would cause the zine to pop out constantly.

images

paper dolls with its unique flaps

Hence I decided to go with this idea of flaps.

Untitled-1

Initial

Then, for better user experience again, I decided to make it in such a way that the direction of the speech bubbles is interchangeable. The speech bubbles are also colour coded based on the negative or positive feeling or connotation it evokes. For example, green is highlighted in words like ‘bojio’ , ‘mugger’, ‘hao lian’ and so on which suggest hints of envy/jealousy.

TEXTTT TEXTT

I then proceeded to work on improving the visuals of the content itself with trying out changes of illustration styles while retaining the content itself. I also did some edits for the content to make it more appropriate and even more relatable to singapore (aim: with one glance, viewers should be able to tell its singapore context).

Illustration style 1: adding of obvious black outlines to make the subject matter stand out more

'''deer

left: with outline / middle: original / right: embossing

However, it was scraped as it did not make much obvious differences and did not fit the final outcome I was looking for.

Illustration style 2: adding of embossing / shadows to make it more 3-dimensional and also to make the work come more to life.

Illustration style 2: line work illustrations with limited colour palette (2-3colours used only)

I really loved the aesthetics however I was facing many problems with making it neater and hiding the overlapping shapes.

For this zine, I wanted the main focus to be on the interactivity. There are two sides (single life / married life) to this zine, where it can read from any direction and the narratives would still work. The reason for two sides is because there are the groups of people who are more career/single life orientated, the groups of people who are more family orientated and of course the group of people who overlap these two sides as well.

I titled the zine – ‘Adventures of the Kiasubuck’ because viewers can choose how the story flows, the personality of the characters. Generally, I invite viewers to set their own adventures based on the available choices of singlish words. This is to highlight how their choice of words and the way one speaks can change the impression they leave on others.

The zine is printed one sided so as to prevent damage to the subsequent contents as I created slits for viewers to slot in their choice of speech bubbles. The available places for slotting in the speech bubbles are not just limited to the pre-made slits but I welcome viewers to make their own slits and they can choose to place the speech bubbles on anything they see fit , allowing for a more enriching experience. The white border around the content serves to maintain the neatness as well as an influence from the book I’m inspired from (Singapore Lang – What the Singlish! Book). The orientation of the book is in a horizontal format instead of vertical so viewers are allowed to immerse themselves in the narrative and see the details (the small details are important hence I avoided making the works too small). Choice of paper is thick for both the cover pages and inside pages, this is to firstly retain my inspiration from the kind of hard paper the creation of paper dolls  use. Secondly, it is to withstand the possible wear and tear in the future.

For the speech bubble page, I made them in a layout that all the individual speech bubbles follow the orientation of the respective pages. The pockets are made of tracing paper so to allow viewers to be able to see the words at one glance without having them to take each out to check which one it is. I also left part of speech bubbles out of the pockets so that viewers can easily take and put the speech bubbles back after use.

Difficulties/Reflection

The hardest part of the zine was actually the speech bubbles aspect as I had to think about how to store them properly without them falling out when the book is flipped from all directions and I had to cut them all out neatly without damaging them . Credits to Fiona who taught me how to make the secure pockets.

My topic for this project is on animals, particularly deers. There are already many illustrations being done on animals, ranging from realistic to being really simple. This led me to wonder how could i set myself apart from them and make my works that can be uniquely mine. In the end, I was inclined to base my concept in singapore’s context since I am a singaporean myself.  I hope to bring the experience of being one out as well as to make it relatable to the others as well  through my works.

The style I was going for  was to resemble that of comics relatively. Hence, I arranged my works in an order that can tell a story, such as, “a day in the life of a singaporean deer“.  Since i was basing all the POVs from the same deer, I decided to name it so that it becomes more personal. The name i decided to go with is KiasuBuck since the number trait I think of for Singaporeans is being Kiasu and my main character also takes the gender of a male deer, also known as Buck.

These are made from the basic shapes as well as some found vectors.

Phone from the point of view of KiasuBuck is

1.phone

                 Socialising.

KiasuBuck is having a lighthearted breakfast with his friend at the hawker centre. They also appear to be interacting with each other.

I felt that if deers were to have phones, how would it be? Instead of the literal phone that we humans use, i decided to make use of their long antennas as the source for their networking. Hence, in other words, the deers use their antennas as phones. In such a chaotic and noisy surrounding, we are easily distracted by many sounds around us, hence  i decided to place the blue radiating lines that resemble ‘signal’ in different directions and sizes. What you’ll notice here is i choose the word phone instead of talk as socialising. This is so because I felt this is a rather apparent phenomenon (people interacting behind the screens instead of face to face) happening right now with all the advanced technology. I also added many small details to enhance the flavour of living in Singapore such as the various signs one would always see, the tissue paper packet people would use to ‘chop’ their seats as well as the food that isn’t sometimes cleared away even with the implementation of self-clearing zones.

Food from the point of view of KiasuBuck is

2. food

                 Vegetarian.

Secondly, after Kiasu finished his breakfast, he fell hungry again soon after and wondered about what to eat. He decided to have Macs.

In this work, I aimed to portray it through those MacDonald coupons we always receive. Instead of burgers, I switched all the food to the diets of a deer and prices to where they are commonly being found.

Water from the point of view of KiasuBuck is

3. water

                   Bath Time.

After his meals, KiasuBuck thought it was too hot and decided to take a shower.

Here you’ll see an elephant spraying water for the deers to bath. I wanted set it up in a way that resembles the singapore zoo, where during the elephant show, there is always this segment where the elephant would spray water at the guests. Since deers are not really water creatures , i decided for the water to be just a few droplets instead of a full-blown water shower. Also, another common thing about Singaporeans is they tend to like to queue and queues have an indication of something being really good.

Holiday from the point of view of KiasuBuck is

4. celebration

                      Work.

After bathing, KiasuBuck was comfortable enough  now but has  to rush off for work.

The holiday i was inclined to portray was christmas. To get into the mood, Kiasu changed into his uniform (santa claus suit) and the dangling ornaments on his antennas are to resemble that of a christmas tree. On first look, it appears to be a joyous occasion. However, taking a closer look, one would notice the forced smile, the typical-work-suitcase and the list of schedules. In Singapore , I felt that people are always working even in the holidays.

KiasiDoe from the point of view of KiasuBuck is

5.love

                     Love.

On the way back, KiasuBuck found love when he had least expected it.

I wanted to play with the idea of finding love at unexpected places and thus my composition above. KiasiDoe, Kiasi because its the first trait i think of for Malaysians and Doe for female deer. In Singapore, its a common sight to see Singaporeans with Malaysians (Pr s). Personally, I also choose to portray it this way since that is what my parents are. 143 also have a meaning for I love you.

Forest from the point of view of KiasuBuck is

6. home

                       Home.

Lastly, KiasuBuck settled into his new home with his family.

Instead of using the human furnitures, i made them with the leaves, trees, berries and acorns. Again, i wanted to play with the idea of how Singaporeans are always busy with work. I added some small details of what some typical Singaporean family would have in their homes, such as the yellow pages, the traditional chinese calendar and the pile newspaper, such as the straits times. In front of the bookshelf, I placed one baby doe who has fell asleep from studying, a common thing that happens to Singaporean students. However in the front, baby buck has this exclamation mark to indicate he saw something but was in his own world since the others are too busy to entertain him/ the person who always gets ignored because they’re on different pages.

-The End-

How it looks without the speech bubbles.

-1.phone -2. food -3. water -4. celebration -5.love -6. home

Since i was dealing with the subject matter of deers. I first decided to explore more on the forms of the deer itself and also to try out some of the styles from my artist reference.

I also tried out some compositions through digital manipulation. I wanted to show a juxtaposition of either a fake animal in real environment or vice versa. Hence, i started by taking a few pictures of my own toy figurines and found an image of forest.IMG_7488IMG_7489IMG_7490IMG_7491forest roads 1600x1200 wallpaper_www.wallpaperfo.com_19

This are some tryouts:

After the first consultation with Joy, I decided to changed my approach and emailed her about the concept I’ve decided to focus on. This are some compositions that I’ve thought of:

3 4 5

Initially I was planning on producing it traditionally but Joy suggested for me to try something that would be related to my major, interactive media (IM). Hence, I decided to move to digital style of illustrations in terms of execution. Before I did it digitally, I explored more on my composition and also to finalise how it would more or less appear in the end.

6 7 8 9 10

When I finally to actually doing it digitally, I faced many difficulties as  I’ve never done digital illustrations before. Hence, I decided to illustrate my concept through the most basic shapes and some found vectors. This is an example of my tryout for the characterisation of Mr KiasuBuck.

Overall concept: Subtle defect/flaws & Consumerism (refer to process II for more details)

MY NAME IS
IMG_7484
AND I WORK ON AN ASSEMBLY LINE

In this work, the subject matter is made up of rolled-up stripes of black and white paper on cardboard as background. The colour choice is to indicate a dull, boring and burdensome life of an assembly line worker. Additionally, they also represent others things too.The use of cardboard is because usually the packaging are all packed into the cardboard before it is sent off. The black colour papers represents or resembles the conveyor belt that can be found in factories while the white ones represent the products being manufactured. The swirly black paper surrounding the alphabets are to represent or indicate that this is just part of the huge factory. I choose to use just ‘SH’ because to resemble like company or brand names where they tend to just use acronyms. The process of making this was rather repetitive, simple yet tedious and I felt all these fit very well with how this industry is in reality too.

Many people tend to overlook or they choose to ignore the flaws or defects, thinking that everything was good, perfect. However, on closer look, one would see that not all the whites (products) are the same. Two of them actually have black stains that represent their defects. Also, if one looked over at the ‘conveyor belt’, the ‘wheels’ are not all evenly made. This is to suggest even the machines break down sometimes so both human and machine error occurs here.

I presented this work through photography and i choose a close up shot because i wanted to focus in on the details which people tend to overlook when they take in the whole picture at first glance. Secondly, it is taken from an angle instead of frontal because i wanted it to show from my perspective of how i view this job and for it to mean “I’m showing this from an angle and this is the angle I want you to view this job as.” Hence, viewers would unconsciously take notice of the often overlooked flaws. I also wanted for the light and shadow to represent day and night.

MY NAME IS
My name is ... And I'm a video game player.
AND I 'M A VIDEO GAME PLAYER

In this work, I chose to do pixel art simply because video games are made of pixels and my thoughts were more towards the more older generation of such games where people around my age would have widely engaged with it when they were much younger instead of the modern ones. The characters i choose include those from mario, pokemon and pacman. Why these particular characters is because I feel they are the ones that most people can identify with.

I choose to do this on graph paper instead of digitally because i feel it encapsulates many factors of my concept. Firstly, I view such games to be played in the childhood years and not many people play such games now. Some may not even remember. Hence, I wanted for it to have some nostalgic feel. The graph paper was a great choice because many of us now don’t have a need for graph paper anymore and when they view it in this current time, they may have thoughts like, ” is that graph paper? reminds me of…” So similar, in terms of such games it would be, ” I remember this games, i used to play them or see them!” Secondly, it would be the process of making this work with this paper. To do this piece of work, i had to count and colour in at the correct boxes which resembles how video games are (systematic, orderly).

The characters are part of the alphabets and help form it. This is to suggest that how when we play these games,  these characters are a part of us or we were a part of them, be it we were controlling them in games or be it we liked them so much we imagine ourselves to be them. The black lines that help form the alphabets are actually illustrations of the wire of consolers.

The composition is wavy, in a up and down way to suggest that when we play games sometimes we feel happy and excited but other times we feel sad, angry or down.

The defects/glitches are shown through the faded or wrong pixels as well as the wires that are thinning out or already broken. This is to suggest even though games can be systematic, there can be break downs or system glitches from time to time.

MY NAME IS
My name is ... And I'm a fashion/textile designer.
AND I'M A FASHION / TEXTILE DESIGNER

In this work, I illustrated the letters through many various patterns. Each letter have some similarities to indicate the same style of the same designer but yet they also has their own unique feature, just like how the designs of fashion/textile designers are.

It is also visible in my work how each letter is placed at the same distance apart from one another. This is to give views time to admire each letter by itself before admiring it as a whole, resembling how the designs alike that of those in this industry need their ‘own limelight’ and space. The equal spacing is also to indicate that the designs are usually carefully calculated or arranged and not just some random choice of placement.

I did away with the colours and kept it relatively in black but highlighted in shiny gold and silver. This is to keep it sophisticated, elegant and glamourous.

However, upon a closer inspections, one would start to take notice of the ugly pencil lines and some would have thoughts of “why is this there? Shouldn’t this be hidden from public?”. They are not because i forgot to erase them or anything along that line but actually an deliberate act to push my message across. The straight lines that look like measurements or alignments guide are to indicate the initial steps for designers before they can come up with their wonderful designs. These designs do not come easily but are only achieved through numerous failed attempts, hence it is rather tedious and requires much hard work. The more wavy lines or to resemble those of loose strands of tread from clothes/textiles, because even though the final product may look totally perfect from afar, their is still some not so visible defeat somewhere.

My choice of paper is solely for the purpose of aesthetics where i feel black on white would look rather empty or incomplete while off-white paper is more pleasant on the eye and would enhance the aesthetic quality too.

MY NAME IS
My name is ... And I'm a gardener.
AND I'M A GARDENER

In this work, it is first done digitally where i cut out the individually flowers on photoshop to form letters of my name. After printing them out, i illustrated with both black marker and pencil.

I choose for the top part of the background to be a light-blue that sort of resembles the sky as well as to portray the quality of calmness and serenity. On the other hand, the shade of red is to indicate that not everything was that ‘peaceful’ and their is actually handwork, pain and even blood(some flowers have thorns and all) involved. Hence, in a way the blue is the beautiful part while red is the negative part.

The plants that form the alphabets of my name look pretty and elegant at first glance or from afar but upon near inspection, one will see that there is actually some withering or spoiled(holes) ones inside as well. This is to suggest the idea of not everything that seems perfect is perfect, and the flaws are only noticeable if one cares or have the interest enough to go see it at a closer level.

The insects represented by a lady bug and a bee is to not only suggest that they are part of what makes up a garden but also to bring up the idea of how they are often discredited or overlooked when they actually aid in healthy and beautiful garden growth. Just like the gardener, who is often overlooked or disregard.

To play up this idea of having both positives and negatives, I illustrated the upper half to be positive, where flowers are blooming, leaves are healthy and there is even animals(bird). On the bottom half, there are ugly vines and menacing, prickly thorns. I also illustrated in such a way that they are connected in a way and it is almost circular to suggest that this is alike that of a cycle that goes on repeatedly.

1. Assembly Line Worker

After doing up the piece itself, I planned to present it to viewers through photography instead of the actual one (also taking in mind how Joy suggested to deviate from 3D stuff). Hence, I wanted to explore a lot with the shots and take from various different views and ways so that I can get the best shot that best depicts my idea.

This is not a layout/composition exploration but while i was taking the shots of my work, i chanced upon this casted shadow of an ‘S’ and thought that it was rather beautiful yet interesting and it definitely has room for future further developments.

Presentation explorations:

Since Joy suggested during the first consultation to do away with 3-dimensional works, I decided to stick to presenting it by photography. Instead of just using it as a medium to capture the work, I wanted to fully utilise this medium by making edits, filters and adjustments to enhance both the aesthetics and also conceptually as well.

A. Filter – Tom (Pixlr ; default)

As many of the negativity of such factories/industries are make known to the world nowadays is by newspaper report, hence black and white is to resemble that of a newspaper clipping. One can argue that technology is so advanced nowadays that pictures can be printed in colour now. However, i felt that assembly line workers are more prominent in the older times where technology was not as advanced.

IMG_7454(b&w) IMG_7456(b&w) IMG_7465(b&w) IMG_7464(b&w) IMG_7459(b&w) IMG_7474(b&w)

B. Filter – Sanna (Pixlr ; subtle)

Adding on to the point above, to current date there are still some assembly line workers still doing the work manually and are not yet being replaced by machines. Hence, with this point in mind, the factories would tend to try and cover up their negatives/faults to maintain their reputation. Similarly to how the companies work, this filter sort of beautifies the image, in a way covering up for the bad parts but the critical flaws can still be seen.

IMG_7454(brown) IMG_7456(brown) IMG_7459(brown) IMG_7474(brown) IMG_7471(brown) IMG_7465(brown) IMG_7464(brown)

C. Filter – Ingrid (Pixlr ; subtle)

The idea for this filter is totally opposite from the first two mentioned above. Instead, in this filter, it sort of sharpens and makes the image rather grainy/coarse-looking which sort of portrays effectively how tough and hard it actually is for the people working in this industry. In a way it can depict the working environment/conditions realistically.

Since my overarching concept is about subtle glitches & consumerism, I decided to not colour every square (pixel) fully. Some appear faded while some appears the proper fully coloured square.

3. Fashion Designer / Textile Designer

After looking over where my progress was currently at for this work, I felt that something was still not right because of the spacing between each letter. I felt that they were too cluttered together which does not fit in with what i think of the job. I feel that in this industry, every piece of cloth they create is meaningful and each hold their own importances. They’re all unique pieces and they are each given adequate time limits for the audience to admire.

Therefore, i wanted to capture all those in my typography work and this is what i came up with:

textile1

Off-white/ beige paper with spaced out letterings

I decided to do away with the various colours schemes to make it look more sophisticated and glamorous, just like how the fashion/textile designers tend to work towards. Instead I tried out with black pen and the shiny/slightly glittery colour pencils .

For the backgrounds I planned to use individually or combination of  maybe blues, greens, reds & greys, blacks and white. Why those colours?

  1. Blue: calmness, serenity
  2. Green: nature, envy,
  3. Red: blood, pain, passion
  4. Grey, black, white :hidden negatives/flaws, unknowns, overlooked

Here are some tryouts with background exploration:

I decided to also tryout without the backgrounds i initially tried out with as it would also be hard for me to put in my illustration on it if i wanted to do mixed medium since it will be too cluttered. Therefore, i decided to leave it simple and plain but i explored on the various colours that are suitable for my idea.

Basically what i did from my previous update on OSS was to develop the ideas further and to finalise the respective designs. (I won’t be writing on the concept/idea/story behind the works in this post, but just the physical process developments). Here is briefly, my current progress:

1. Assembly Line Worker

I decided to work with a dull colours (black , white, brown) for this design.

assembly9

Cartridge paper (white) & black paper (black)

cardboard-paper-250x250

The colour brown actually  comes from the colour of the cardboard.

assembly2

Style one : Loose curls (Initial)

assembly5

Style 2: Controlled/Tight curls (Chosen)

I felt that the second style would be more appropriate and suitable for my concept instead of my initial style hence i decided to work with the tighter and more controller curls.

Process:

assembly8

1. Roll up the strips of paper.

assembly10

2. Double side tape the ends together.

assembly6

3. Fold a alphabet ‘skeleton’ then place the rolled-up strips in.

*Note: Final design still unconfirmed, may do more explorations.

2. Video Game Player

A problem arise while i was about to do the actual piece. The problem was there was insufficient space (A5) for me to execute my initial idea (using the many pixelated characters, stacking/connecting them to form the alphabet). For example, one alphabet would have taken up almost half the paper and for this design i wanted it to be a total of seven alphabets (Siew Hua).

Therefore, this led me to kind of tweak my ideas to satisfy the assignment’s requirements.

game3

Alphabet ‘S’ & ‘e’

I decided to keep one character for one alphabet but it still retains the concept of how the character is a part of the letter (as seen in the above picture.)

3. Fashion Designer / Textile Designer

For this design i explored further with the choice of medium and choice of background before finalising it.

textile3

colour pencil (left) , pen (right)

I felt that even though it can still bring my message across, it was not pleasant to the eyes in terms of how it look aesthetically. Additionally, aesthetics is a strong factor in this fashion/textile industry.

textile 5

white pen on black paper

I always believed and thought that illustrating white on black has this attractive quality to it hence i decided to explore in this area as well.

However, after trying the various mediums, i still felt my original choice of medium and colour for it was still better. (black pen)

textile 6

Colour choice: using what i learn from colour theory last sem (complementary shown in pic above) Background: done on shiny silver paper

I encountered many problems such as smudging and how the medium and/or colours and/or background do not blend well together.

textile2

Combination of black pen with colour pencils on white cartridge paper.

textile 4

*Note: Final design relatively confirmed but might have some changes.

4. Gardener

I researched on the exact plants that i was going to work with. Since my overall concept was going to be about consumerism, I searched up on the most expensive flowers and these were the results:

Ranunculus 425 (1024x683)

Ranunculus

Value: $3 Per Stem

This is an expensive flower and is a very popular option when it comes to special occasions. On the other hand, they are great alternatives to peonies and roses too. They come in multiple colors and few of its colors are there year round while other color variations are limited to early summer and spring.

Stephanotis

Stephanotis

Value: $3 to $8 Each

Stephanotis flowers are otherwise called Madagascar Jasmine. These tiny, sweet scented, star shaped white flowers are commonly seen on wedding occasions. The best thing about this flower is that they are easily available. However, they are pretty expensive on peak seasons.

Peony

Peony

Value: $12 to $15 Per Stem

Peonies are certainly beautiful and this is the reason why they are expensive too. Their price varies though. The peak season is April, May & June. During these months, the cost of this flower goes really high (up to $15 to $20 each). Peonies usually cost twice than roses and are bigger too.

Gardenia

Gardenia

Value: $20 Per Bloom

Gardenias are obtainable all year. This richly perfumed flower is classically cut by the grower just to have its stem less than 1-inch long. You will see florists using them in corsages and bouquets with little wire & tape. Gardenias do not come cheap for the reason that they are unique and give off a great scent. Gardenias are magnificent when you see them float in glass bowls. Moreover, if they are kept this way, they last for 1 week but you require changing the water every day or at least once in 2 days.

Lisianthks

Lisianthus

Value: $ 10 – $35 Per Bundle

These lavender colored delicate flowers are greatly admired for its looks. People often buy them to decorate their garden. However, they require great attention and 100% care, else it easily withers away. This expensive flower blooms annually & is 5-cm in diameter. Lisianthus can easily grow from 15cm – 60cm in height. It has delicate, ruffled and wide oval petals. Lisianthus flowers come in multiple colors like pale purple, lavender, blue violet and white. The reason as to why they are been sold for high price is that they are long lasting — it can survive for 2 to 3 weeks even after it is cut from the stem. Since these are extremely fragile, they earn the name — “Paper Flowers”.

Lily Of The Valley

Lily Of The Valley

Value: $15 to $50 Per Bundle

Nicknamed as “Lady’s Tears” because of the way they appear. They are harvested once in a year and they bloom during May month. They have an amazing smell and even have the ability to survive few weeks after its been plucked. It is well liked for its dainty and delicate appearance. They have bell-shaped blooms. Its stalk goes up to 15-30 cm tall and are surrounded by 2 long leaves whereas the flowers reach about 5mm – 10 mm in diameter. They are expensive for the reason that they require high maintenance.

Hydrangea

Hydrangea

Value: $6.5 Per Stem

This is another most expensive flower in the world. They are grown at Eastern Asia, Southern America & few parts of Asia. This flower is admired for its matchless circular bunch of small flowers in every stem. Shrubs basically grow around 1 – 3 meters tall — right from their early spring until late autumn. You can see these flowers mostly in white blooms, blue, light purple, violet and even pink. Hydrangeas easily droop & wilt. These flowers are commonly used during occasions, especially on weddings. The reason that they are expensive is that it takes huge effort to produce & cultivate.

Gloria

Gloria

Value: $ 7 to $10 Per Flower

This beautiful flower is expensive as well. It is native only to Asia and South Africa. Apart from being expensive, this cute little flower is rare and distinctive too. It has extended tendrils, which support bloom’s weight. The leaves are about 3-meters long and are admired for ostentatious flowers with flexed petals. These come in oranges, yellows, deep reds & yellow-green.

17th Century Tulip Bulb

17th Century Tulip Bulb

Value: $600 to $1000 Per Bud

Even in the year 1673, this flower was sold for 10000 gilders. Can you believe that? Now, this explains why this flower is so expensive even today. Since it is considered historic, every bud will cost you between $600 and $1000. Not only is this flower exceptional but also rare.

Instead of my initial illustrative idea, I wanted to change the technique and push the idea further by doing it with mixed mediums or digitally.

Some problems i faced while making these designs digitally was the colour adjustments, trying to piece them to form how i want my alphabet to look and also it took me quite some time to crop out the images individually.

(For mixed media idea): Tryout with different pen/markers/pencil on the paper I’ll be printing on (probably matt paper)

Similarly i also faced problems with some medium smudging  and unsuitable to use with my choice of paper.

Exploration for gardener design

random1

Exploration for fashion/textile design

Our workload has been reduced from six pieces to four pieces therefore i decided to work with these professions : Gardener, Video Game Player, Fashion Designer/Textile Designer and Assembly Line.

Currently, this is what I’m planning on working towards:

Overall Concept:

  • Consumerism

According to Abraham Maslow (1954)’s “Hierarchy of Needs”,  we who are living in the first world environment, we desire more just our basic needs which leads to consumerism such as beauty, entertainment and fashion.

  • Subtle decay/glitches

Behind all these chase for consumerism, beneath of the glamour and fun, there are  actually many hidden flaws or negativities that we overlook or don’t pay attention to.

Developments:

Gardener

Idea: bittersweet job, every beautiful thing has its flaws/bad

” I’m one of these people ; Everybody has good and bad days. Nobody is perfect and they may  have hidden flaws but its because of all these that makes one into who they are now. “

  • usage of pastel colours for letterings
  • blue background
  • gradation of decay to full bloomed flowers (subtle)
  • use of actual flower/flower petals?
Video Game Player

Idea: rigid, orderly way of playing, fun yet boring, probably forgotten, nostalgia (usually people will go “oh yea i remember this!”)

” I’m someone who prefers routine to constant changes/uncertainty. The feelings towards is dependable in a way to who is the one interacting with me and how their personalities are. Hence, I’m can be seen as someone who can be fun to some people while boring to some others. Its also probably because I may be ‘boring’ to some people  that they will start to forget about my existence and only remember later after years when I’m mentioned to them by chance. “

  • glitches in pixels (subtle)
  • repetitive characters instead of many varying characters
  • lettering appear to be systematic, rigid and not explosive or fun-looking
Fashion Designer/ Textile Designer

Idea: Beautiful but actually complex, tiring and tedious process

” Beneath the surface and also to develop to what i am today, there is actually  a lot of work and the phrase- blood, sweat and tears, literally. “

  • colours used instead of black and white
  • some design flaws/blemishes (subtle)
  • use of actual textiles?
Assembly Line

Idea: Not always perfect but has flaws/ defects when looked closer

” I may seem like I’m doing perfectly fine but if you took the effort and time to take a closer look into me, you’ll find that actually things are not always perfect like how they seem on the surface. “

  • black and white overall but defect highlighted in colour or missing parts? (for illustration works)

or

  • play of shadows through photography to highlight hidden flaws (for the rolled strips work)

The next step after researching on artist references that had really gave me many ideas and inspiration, i felt that the illustrative ones are the ones that reached out to me more. I proceeded to trying them out myself in my own style infused with it.

Firstly, i started by looking back at the brief closely and started my ideation with these given professions : Librarian, Parasite, Assembly Line, Crime Scene Investigator, Video Gamer Player, Insomniac. My first steps are to listed down what i thought and felt about those professions. It is only till later then i realised i could choose to do my own choice of six professions or attributes after talking to my friends.

Therefore i decided further my exploration with the ones i already had many ideas for (Librarian, Assembly Line, Video Gamer Player and Insomniac) and switched out the ones which i don’t for others of my own choice (Fashion Designer/Textile Designer , Fruit Seller,  Gardener and someone who drills holes for houses ; house driller? ).

My plan was to try out the ones which work best and choose the best six out of all.

Librarian

What i view/feel:

  • quiet , glasses , books,  shelves of books, loan receipts in books, many notices/signs asking visitors to remain quiet.
  • “shhhh!”

librarian

In the work above,  I wanted to have a cutout of the alphabets ‘S’ & ‘H’ in block lettering from a page of a book/story/novel (since its just a tryout i did a cutout on my magazine instead of the real book) to represent how in the library they always emphasise for us to remain quiet by constantly “shhh” us. Since my initials are TSH, i decided to just use SH instead of my full initials or full name to embed the idea of “shhh” in it.

Insomniac

What i view/feel:

  • “counting sheeps”, restless , tired eyes
  • when you close your eyes, its not exactly black but actually reddish

insomanic

In this i decided to try out a piece digitally and i choose to use block lettering as well to make it more impactful. The repetition of my name is to represent how people tend to try counting sheep to fall asleep (even though it never works LOL?). I made only the last four ones start to blur out in increasing order while six remains completely clear. This is to play with the idea of how insomniac remains awake for a longer amount of time then he/she spends sleeping.

House Driller

What i view/feel:

  • holes , systematic, calculated
  • noisy

driller

Initially, i wanted to really make a hole in the paper by punching a hole through it with the hole puncher. However, it was difficult to get them in the right points therefore i resorted to just using dots with my marker. I had a conflict whether i should use pointillism where i cluster the dots or just a simple-one-dot kind of thing. I decided on the latter because because the actual profession drills holes only at points that are needed hence its actually quite minimal. The dots are also calculated carefully before i made the mark because house drillers cannot make mistakes (wrong holes) because it will make the house ugly.

Fruit Seller (market ones)

What i view/feel:

  • Bubbly, loud, large mixture & diversity of fruits
  • Their constant ongoing promoting is the one that sometimes attracts me to look & buy from them

fruit seller

With inspiration from my artist reference, i illustrated my name in side of the fruits. The words are bubbly-looking because thats how the sellers’ personalities are or at least that is how they appear when they are trying to sell their products. Another meaning for having the words as part of the fruits to represent how without the loud and constant promoting of the sellers people might not even notice the fruits or even want to purchase them. Another thing to note is that when people choose fruits they also choose base on the how good the skin looks. Hence, the fruits sellers are in a way the skin of the fruits, they help attract customers.

^Artist reference: David J. Short (refer to research post)

Fashion Designer / Textile Designer

What i view/feel:

  • diverse patterns , flowy , beautiful, slight flaws sometimes

designer

First of all, why fashion designer? There’s actually a funny reason behind it because back in Junior College one of my friends used to like nicknaming me ‘sew flower’ (siew 花 was how she perceived my name). Hence, i had the idea for this particular profession. This tryout is done with black pen. I drew many various patterns where it is constant at times but irregular at times. I also tried to incorporate the idea of flown-ness.

^ Artist reference: Teagan White (refer to research post)

Gardener

What i view/feel:

  • serene , elegant, beautiful, slight flaws, nature
  • bittersweet job
  • impression of how gardens are gated because gardeners don’t want you destroying their hard work (see but no touching)

gardener 2

In this tryout, the swan represent ‘S’, ‘i’ and ‘e’ are the flowers, ‘w’ is the gates and ‘Hua’ is the water. Swans embody the idea of elegance as well as nature hence it is my choice of animal.

gardener

In this tryout, it is illustrating my name with vines, flowers and leafs. Also, the end of ‘a’ is extended to be look like a overarching tree. The small bird represents life, presence of animals and nature.

^Artist reference: Aleph Corporation (refer to research post)

Video Game Player

What i view/feel:

  • really old (even ancient to children of a younger gen)
  • games like pacman, mario, pokemon, etc
  • pixelated, mathematical

video gamer

I  tried this on the graph paper that we used to use for drawing graphs when we were younger hence in a way it has the idea of being  mathematical. Also, as i mentioned earlier, most of this video games are forgotten or unknown because of the more advanced games that are constantly being produced hence i wanted to stick with a traditional method. As seen in the illustration above, i did not finish the letter ‘H’ because it is actually really tedious and tiring to just draw one character out.

(Joy did suggest trying it out digitally, i did but i did not like the outcome and i also felt that it did not really click with my ideas.)

Assembly Line

What i view/feel:

  • systematic , order , identical, mass-production objects, complex, busy, conveyer belts, repetition, dull, boring

assembly line

Referencing from one of my artist reference, i tried to make the fonts more 3-dimentional (3D). Also like how 3D is related to product design/ industrial design therefore this choice for the style  of font. The varying directions of lines is also to represent how it is rather complex and busy in the factory.

^Artist reference: Viplov Singh & Svabhu Kohli (refer to research post)

assembly line 2

For this tryout, i wanted to make use of the basic shapes and symbols to communicate my idea of mass-production.

^Artist reference: Maribor Maricar (refer to research post)

assembly line 3

Lastly, in this, i sliced and rolled strips of paper to form the word itself. In the process of doing this i realised it is rather repetitive and in a way it reminded me of how a manufacturing factory works. Additionally, the rolled up strips also reminded me of the conveyor belts. (Joy advised to deviate from actual 3D but to focus more on developing in a 2D-2D way). While i was taking the picture to document this process i also realised how i could actually can play with the light and shadow to enhance my idea.

^Artist reference: Lavanya Naidoo (refer to research post)

After the first and second consultation with Joy one week ago, I realised that i did not have a strong  overarching concept/ idea that hold all of the works together. Also, how is this professions are related to me and how could i make my works conceptually stronger with deeper meanings.

To start off the first project for foundation 2D II, I delved into researching artists for inspirations and ideas. Personally, the artists i decided to reference from are because of their works that i find rather interesting i would like try it out for myself. The works range from focusing on the typeface to being decorative/ illustrative to photography/gifs and lastly to the usage of unconventional mediums.
