Typographic Portrait Process

Now that my stylistic research is done, i proceeded to look for inspiration from works themselves,

different artists who manage to utilise typography in their works.

From these inspirations, i can see a very acute use of space and iconography, some playing with positive and negative space,

and more interestingly, with the concept of depth in a two dimensional work.

As per the project, i started off by doing abit of soul searching, digging up terms and words

that resonated with myself.

As for a theme, i decided to do a social commentary about self advertising and exaggeration,

as this project reminded me of interviews and resumes. Thus i did some digging on how people creatively send their resumes.

In todays times where technology is accessible, people dont use traditional means of sending resumes, instead

take to online submissions or emails. Thus this makes sending resumes by snail mail “unique” and makes you stand out,

albeit in a pretentious manner.

most aesthetically pleasing look with my name, SONG

I decided to do an ironic work, where the text does the opposite of the portrayed, in order

to emphasize the effect of exaggeration. For Calm and Collected, i decided to try soot art,

which was wild and uncontrolled, the opposite.

For Neat and Tidy, I decided to use negative and positive space created from the trash in my room.

Inspired by Braille, for my work Honest and Open, i tried a more textural approach,

using methods like braille in order to hide a message, demonstrating the opposite of what was

written.

Using a needle, i poke the back of the card and create braille like touchable protrusions.

Finally, for Careful and Cautious, i decided to use the qualities of my inkjet printer, which

smudges in contact with water in order to make a “careless” work. The idea was to demonstrate

accidently spilling something, which in this case was ink.
