#nohomo : what is bromance?

Got money out the ass, no homo but I’m rich.

Without a doubt, the phrase “no homo” has made its way into mainstream culture, even as the Guardian explores how acknowledging one’s love for a bro is an act of courage and vulnerability, just like the act of coming out.

As men become more comfortable with expressing themselves to other men, the development of the term ‘bromance’ has brought about interesting insight into masculinity and the emotions of mankind.

  • Urban Dictionary defines bromance as “the complicated love and affection shared by two straight males.”
  • Wikipedia defines bromance as “a close, emotionally intense, platonic bond between two men. … an exceptionally tight affectional, homosocial male bonding relationship exceeding that of usual friendship… distinguished by a particularly high level of emotional intimacy.”
  • dictionary.com defines bromance as “a relationship or friendship between two men that is extremely close but does not involve sex”

Looking beyond the obvious complications of defining a ‘romance’ relating to sex or love, fascinating articles from Men’s Health, WikiHow and even the Telegraph claim to teach you “How to build a Bromance as strong as your marriage.”, with some even stating how “men are more satisfied by Bromances than their relationships”

In an excerpt from the aptly titled article, “Is bromance gay?”, the author explores the relationship between Steve, who identifies as ‘completely gay’, and his best friend Paul, who claims to be ‘completely straight’.

He and Paul often lay next to each other in bed or the couch and watch movies in their underpants

Paul often seems to ‘show off’ his body and has many times ‘accidentally’ flashed him his bits

On many occasions after the gym they attend together, Paul is keen to get to the showers with him, then spends a long time drying while naked in front of Steve which actually makes Steve uncomfortable

When Steve and Paul are drunk and texting each other, Paul will often flirt with him and allude to sexual acts without actually saying the words. If Steve gets a little too suggestive, Paul stops responding

Once, Steve made the mistake of suggesting they try something together and Paul got angry and informed Steve that he’s not gay and stormed off.
