Puddle Vision in one night [Final pt.2] Digital Photography

Good day,

for the final approach of final pt2, I continued along the concept on “puddle vision” where I seek around Singapore streets during rainy time for puddle that give interesting perspective of building, streets, translating them into a surreal different world.

As a recap, I will approaching towards  street/architecture photography with the concept theme around ” utopia” through staging technique

Background/Concept

I love to picture our world into something imaginative. Whether is  sci fi, doom day or a dreamland, it excites me. Back then as conceptual architect student, I would always wanted to create a world that is dreamy and mysterious from a different dimension of the existing environment.  As such, I would like to use this final assignment to capture the many possible ways that i could imagine our reality co-exist with the imaginative world that I could think off.

The catalyst for this exploration first started when I was exploring Singapore city street, where I was fascinated by the many reflective surfaces that reflect interesting visions of architecture and human we never though of.   I would imagine that the surfaces could be the gateway to the other dimension of our reality, where it could be surreal, mysterious and up to us to imagine

Artist Statement(final

My photography work explores on turning Singapore streetscape into many possible mysterious surreal world through water puddle formed from rain.

Inspired by street photographer Michael Kistler who merge environment with reflection to create imaginative conceptual streetscape, my work explores more on finding interesting  perspective angle  of reflected streetscape and transform it into imaginative scene  in comparison with the existing environment.

In this series of work titled ” Puddle vision” ,  audience would get to see my exploration onto Singapore streetscape and my personal take on how I would I imagine Singapore streetscape to be in a mysterious surreal form

“Puddle Vision in one night”

As mention from previous As my concept revolve around the idea of  imaginative world with mysterious theme, my approach on capturing the my images at night have to produce out low key images . As such, my camera technical decision at a ISO of 200 with  aperture stay within 4.6 to 5.6.  The reason is to avoid digital noise and average of depth of field respectively.  As such,  I experiment between different of shutter speed  ranging 2 to 5 sec  with the assistant of a tripod. without further a do, let me have the chance to introduce my photo series puddle Vision, which consist of  5 pictures at the moment  and will be still be add on in the future

Picture  1 ( imaginative surreal world 1)
ISO 200, 3s, 55mm, F4.6 (before)

For this image, I was aiming to find angle that the water could reflect the beautiful structure of the building at he background, such that it give an illusion that there is a building in the water. This image  was taken with a 3s duration with F4.6  at ISO 200 to give a slight digital grain and a low key image exposure.

For post , to  show surreal ideation of the reflected building, I approach on making the building cooler by  increasing Blue  and Green highlights in the Red channel HL layers, to give a surreal white glow to the building. Motion Blur is also add composite to add on to the surreal water reflection, making the reflect surface space more depth and more mysterious.

Picture  2 ( imaginative surreal world 2)
ISO 200, 2s 20mm,F5.6 (before)

For this image, I was aiming to find angle that the water could  give an illusion of surreal depth. Fortunately, I was able to find this water puddle in the street after a rain and the  angle have allow me to capture a infinity depth feel. I set my camera aperture to  F5.6 with an ISO of 200 to open up the aperture as it was extremely underexposed.  2 S is need to get the surreal lowkey shot of this where the highlight of the image is the building in the water puddle.

For Post I give the area in the water puddle a same treatment where I introduce Blue highlight in the blue channel. As the picture I took, the building in a greyish tone, to give a prominent  and surreal effect,  colour balance and blue soft light is added. lastly, to add surreal effect, motion blur is added as well as part of the series

PSD layer ( imaginative surreal world 2)

Picture  3 ( imaginative surreal world 3)
ISO 200, 1/25s, 50mm, F5.6

for this image, I aim to go straight into a low angle shot. I spotted this water uniquely situated near street that is light only a 7 eleven store. The reflection give me a feel of how the street would like. I went took on the shot with a limited battery life as much as possible as I wouldn’t want to miss amazing water puddle formed in such a rare occasion. I shot the image at 1/25s to capture in the ambience lighting in to the image.

For post, I try my best to make drastic distinct between the reality and reflected world. I was unable to make a colour change due to the many different lighting reflect by the water. changing the colour will result in a very weird colour patch on it. Instead, I introduce more pixel into motion blue to the scene to give the surreal effect. Grains  are  added to emphasize  effect.

Picture  4 ( imaginative surreal world 4)
ISO 200 1/15s, 35mm F5.6

For this image is taken at a rainy situation. I found this water puddle form is unique and as it have a longitudinal form that reflect a near by train station.  I shot this image at ISO 200 to maintain grain consistency and surreal effect

PSD layer

For post, I am aiming to create a surreal effect to the shot. I increase the blue highlights in channel masking to bring back the building form from low exposure.  Lastly, motion blur is added in for surreal effect

Final process photo

Picture  5 ( imaginative surreal world 5)
ISO 200 1/30sec 35mm F4.5

This image is shot the intention of the great reflected perspective. The angle and the water effect is nicely place.  I shot this image at 1/30 sec  with F4.5 to a balance low key image.

For post, I try to highlight back some of the building form from the reflected surface by a lifting the Blue channel  HL to achieve a cyan white tone for the building form in the water. The intention is give contrast with the real world yellowish building. I  slightly darken the image to create a sense a “mystery” to the image environment while still maintaining the yellow red tonality (which run across my photo series). Lastly, motion blur is composite in to  make surreal blur effect

Spatial layout of picture series

below is my proposed  series arrangement. the arrangement are plan with the intention to show my exploration of water puddle in a chronological order. I choose to have my starter photo to be large, in order to get my audience attention quickly before they move on to see other part of the photo of what I trying to show about my concept of puddle vision. Furthermore, I personally felt that the left most picture is a good image to illustrate my series concept.

Puddle Vision [Final pt.1] Digital Photography

For the final assignment Pt.1 of Digital Photography, I will approaching towards  street/architecture photography with the concept theme around ” utopia” through staging technique

“Puddle Vision”

As my concept revolve around the idea of  imaginative world with mysterious theme, my approach on capturing the my images at night have to produce out low key images . As such here  images shots that I have taken in raw (non processed)

As images turn up as according to the low images that i would like to have to set the mood base on my concept of ” mysterious utopia. I move on to  process the images.

In digital processes objectives is to subtly bring back up the exposure of the ambience lighting while still maintaining the level of darkness in the photo. For all  images, I introduced a  purple(colour code 6c24bd) soft light to give a mysterious feel as purple signified mysterious and imaginative to the area in the water reflection mask. To give contrast against the environment mask, I put (orange colour code bd9b24) colour soft light to slight brighten the photo space. (see image process sample below)

My digital photo process

In addition,  I experimented on  the water masking area to be slightly brighten up by  lifting highlights curves from channel in highlight channel and lifting the  crushing the shadow curves in shadow channel. ( can be shown in the psd layers screen shot)

With that, i present to you my three processed photo…

Siren Singapore [Exercise 2 The Landscape] Digital Photography

For this landscape exercise, I aim create a imaginative scene of Singapore city to be part of the Movie/video game called “forbidden siren”.

Photo taken

Landscape captured by Nikon D3400, ISO 100, f/60, 1/60sec. 18mm with no mount flash fired
1. Subject:

Location : Merlion Park , Facing Marina Bay Sand

Subject: the Sky above the cityscape of Singapore

The subject is the sky above the city of Singapore (Marina bay Sand hotel). I choose to have this photo taken in such a way for the signifier to set in context for the photo composition. (Showing Merlion, MBS depict Singapore in general)

2. What is the significance of this image? Why did you choose to create your image the way it is?

The image is set in a way where by 75% of  it is fill by sky. The reason is to highlight my sky as the subject, why help me in the digital process is setting the mood. Also, I have my camera perspective that aim such that the Merlion facing skyward  help to divert my audience eyes to focus towards the sky.

3.What are your intentions in your digital workflow? And why?

As my main goal is to depict the video game “forbidden siren” where the apocalypse scenarios with red sky engulf the atmosphere, my digital workflow started off by masking and changing the mood/tonal of the sky to doomsday red . The reason is because the sky is my key subject. Furthermore, it covered 75% of my image. Once I achieved the right red, I move to tone and darken my cityscape accordingly to match against the sky doomsday red to get the tonality and mood. lastly, adding some lightning graphic to enhance the mood and scene of the image

Artist Statement

Ever since . When I was 12 years old, I was introduced to the video game called “forbidden siren”, a horror genre game that talk about an island surround by sea was cursed by mythical mermaid from the past due to sea pollution by human. When there is a siren sound, the sky surround the island turn into deep crimson red and and electrifying thunder start to round in, making the island look like in a doomsday scenarios. I would always like to imagine that situation in Singapore in context, where water turn red and and electrifying  dark cloud pour in. huge thunders strike the iconic landmark of Singapore. For this case is the Merlion. The curse spell have come to Singapore!

Michael Kistler [Photographer Research pt. II] Digital Photography

Good day everyone,

In this photographer research, I would like to share Michael Kistler (@mdkistler or MK photography), an American Street photographer based in Hong Kong, with a passion to create fine art  photography with Human and buildings .

Michael Kistler style of photography involve experimenting movement, blur and other abstract elements while drawing inspiration from street master  like Daido Mariyama and Saul Leiter .

Subway Window, 1950s, Chromogenic print; 14 x 11 inches (Source: Saul Leiter’s Street Photography)

Compare with the masters, one  signature  hallmark of Michael Kistler’s photographic work is  often consist of abstract human element and its  connection to urban landscape at the very present, while people come and go  in different time frame, creating a dynamic environment of fleeting moments. He is constantly searching for and exploring unconventional perspectives and unique moments where people and the urban landscape collide, merge and co-exist.

For me, I have an interest towards Street/Architecture photography, especially towards doing capturing the essence of urban feel through candid shots. I would say my exploration on street photography includes, point and shoot, motion blur and and long exposure. I would be exciting to incorporate Michael Kistler’s style of capture abstract human urban landscape co-exist into my Final project. In addition, I would also like to incorporate his style of exploration on street photography at low light condition (night or low light condition etc.) using urban neon light or nature light. Since in Singapore urban landscape is almost similar to Hong Kong, it would be a good opportunity to work out his style.

“Fight your Fear” [Exercise 1. The Portrait] Digital Photography

Good day everybody,

My image depicts a friend of mine who is a Muay Thai fighter ,reflecting herself. It was taken during her training break in her personal space(locker room).

I decided to photograph her in such a way to capture her anger and frustration that she has towards herself. This can be seen through her facial expression and the way she stared herself directly into her own eyes. Such attitude presence is a huge hindrance especially in this context as it will avoid her from moving forward. As such, I wanted to capture a Muay Thai fighter at her most vulnerable stage. The image portray a different side of a fighter where the subject is not in her fighting element, and instead inviting her audience to get more personal to her true self.

For “post production” process, I decided to highlight her face as it is the focal point of the entire image. This is to emphasize her facial expression in order to send my message across. The after treatment that I did to the image also exude my model’s raging mood that she has with herself. As the image was capture at her personal room where is light exposure at its minimal, higher ISO with faster shutter speed were deployed to compensate  but result with some natural digital grains and sharp facial texture.

Larry Fink [Photographer Research pt. I] Digital Photography

Larry Fink’s ways of photography approach and style inspire me in my approach to taking candid photo with a sense of capturing people emotions. A well respected contemporary leftist photographer well known for his photo works that embraces the “feels” of all people, regardless of their background to find the comparison of people perspective towards a certain situation. his work sometimes challenges people to think deeply and investigate. One example is the photo series “Social Grace”, which were  candid pictures illustrating people behaviour from different social status attending  social events. His  images capture people expression at their unguard moment, which embody the richness of human social behaviour at its true moment. through this, he investigate and question is there a different between the rich and the “not so rich” ?  Larry Fink’s candid photo approach is definitely unique as he was able to capture the soul and mind of his subject, which I  would like to acquire and explore more in my  photo works.

Interesting typeface found : Geometric Maze typeface

Hi everyone, I happen to stubble upon a geometric typeface that I find it quite unique. It is a typeface that uses purely the idea of  vertical and horizontal line to illustrate the individual alphabets and number. In addition, this typeface have influence onto other languages typeface.

Taking on one example from the typeface I found online on the letter  “K”,  “Y” and “Q”  put on strong right angle stroke.

Maze Typeface characteristic Source: Google

Another characteristic that I find unique is that the typeface uses gestalt technique to create imaginary accent line to some letters. some examples include capital letter “A”, “B” and “D”. among all the letter form, I personally the shape and form of  cap size “S” and “R”.

I can’t find the proper name for the typeface, so I would called it  “Maze typeface”.  I believe this maze typeface got it influence from the Arabic geometric calligraphy.

I hope in the future,  I will be able to use the idea to implement the geometric typeface to create a unique textile design like the picture below.
