A little curiosity merely scratches the cat

This branding exercise will enable me to choose which direction I will be heading in for the final project. For this project , I did two brand explorations that revolve around initiatives that have two distinct target audience.
CYPHERING
Here are some logo exploration I did for this brand.
MAI PAISEH
Part of my documentary required me to film for Lion City Throwdown. An international dance event that is organized by Flair Brothers , one of Singapore’s most well known dance crew. This is the 6th and the last LCT and by far the biggest of it series. I had the privilege of filming alongside RP productions for this and am very thankful that the organizers have allowed me to film this event, given that the camera I was using [SONY PMW-200] was bulky and that it could have been dangerous for the dancers there. Fortunately , there were no injures to my film crew nor to any dancers and some of the shots I took were really nice!
I’ve compiled some of the shots together for your viewing pleasure. But I’ve still got much data to sort through! Can’t wait to show the final product!
Ps. The only sad thing during the event for me was that I could not dance. 🙁
A dance cypher is a cyclical freestyle and usually involves a ring of people taking turns to dance in the center. Basically during the event, there will be many cyphers ongoing and the judges will walk around and give scores, from there, they tally the scores and choose the top 16 dancers for each categories , out of more than 200 dancers.
But as seen in the video , it looked more like a party than a competition. Which is amazing, but now my challenge then is setting up the context of how this event works and what exactly are the rules to abide by. I will be interviewing Daniel and Jeremy from Flair Brothers [ the organizers] , so hopefully their interview can establish some from of context on LCT!
Recently interviewed Xiao Mei who has street dance experience of about 9 years. I ended up not only interviewing her but taking shots for two of her classes and joined her kakis for supper later on! Total of 4 hours spent! This are some of the raw clips I took of her [ Interview , dance segment and supper conversations excluded!]
Love how her music kept changing but still flowed into each other. This will make the editing easier! Some of the visual noise I shall need to edit over premier cc!~ Feedback on angles and shots will be great. Did a hasty job placing this together cause I just wanted something that flowed in some sense.
A short documentary I put together for practise. Stories are everywhere,so I might as well kill 2 birds with one stone. I’m still in the midst of setting it up the context and subtitle for this film!
In Singapore , it is common for the locals to have “maids” and unlike a term overseas , being labelled a maid is not an offensive term here. Usually , we call them by their names. But in my case , I called my maid “Kakak” as in ‘older sister’ in Malay. Calling her so meant that I respected her because it is in chinese culture to not call someone older by name.
Maids in Singapore usually stay long years caring and helping out with the household , mostly because both parents are working. Here’s the story of one maid in particular whom I love dearly.
I guess the main reason I want to do this is to tribute something to her. Here’s hoping she may lead a great life ahead.
Kakak Siti came when she was 23, and left our household when I was 23.
I will continue to edit this film after , so feedback will be great!
In all the bustle of FYP and school, I am also struggling with working part time as a designer for Fleawhere, on a part time basis. I’ve been handling quite abit of the BTS for the design however this event [ Tai Fantastic] is one of the biggest and most tedious projects I have taken so far.
Here’s abit of an insight!
Happening at Tanjong Pagar Railway Station on the 12th of September. The project brief requires that I create visuals for the event day, editorials, press kits and goodie bag contents. Overall, prepping for this event has been fun! Though I must say that it is not as strict and as organized as what is done in school and the craft required is quite extensive. This post will show more of the processes and the mistakes I’ve made.
Part 1: Logo Process
Tested out both icons and typographic logos but I did not feel it would have conveyed the message well.
Part 2: Handcrafted Press Kit Process
The press kits are to be sent to media partners to invite them as a VIP.
The Cover
Given that it was a Thai theme event, I decided to make the press kit resemble a take away bowl of Tom Yum Soup! Initially it was to be presented in a coconut but due to the inability to find empty ones in bulk, I had to resort to using things more modular and available. To add to the vintage feel, I bought the everyday takeaway bowls from SKP and covered them with strips of Basa wood. Overall crafting each individual bowl was not a pleasant experience as it was very time consuming.
Mistakes were made but I’ll still smile for the camera.
Because the bowls were tapered, it was hard to make a sleeve for the bowls. Initially I tried using triangle cuts [ See above] so that the wood may bend and wrap around it. That failed terribly as baas wood is soft and easily broken when there are sharp points.
In the end , I resorted to the simple Straight cuts and glued them down in groups of three. Adjusting slightly where the bowl curved more such that not all the planks of wood are had parallel lengths.
The Content
Before I could proceed with what was inside the press kit, I had to understand the point of view as a media partner and the purpose of sending this Press Kits to them .
So, A media partner would like to know
That being said , I had to organize and do the write ups for the prints. It did not help that there were still sponsors and attraction that were not confirmed.
So after discussing with the team, it was concluded that the press kit would contain four things.
Here are the contents are stated!
Above is a booklet about the event. This one was very tricky as it had to be vetted by my boss and also vetted by the sponsors and other organizers. I learnt that the processing time for approval is quite long as in the corporate world, this has to be checked through by many company heads. So it is best to send the draft a early as possible.
As seen above , even after the print was produced , there were still changes to be made. But it is still somehow acceptable here due to the fitting cover up! [Thanks boss.]
When you print , check for typo first. Don’t make my rookie mistake. Ps. also the dates were printed wrong.Thankfully this was only a two piece print!
I guess another though thing is the measurements . I had to measure the diameter of the top and bottom of the bowl and the fact that it was tapered downwards meant that as I added more and more layers below , I had to reduce the size of my prints according to their sequence!
It was risky that I did not use any test prints, however I used paper cuts as a mock up measurement!
lastly , the image above shows a single page for the booklet about the organizing company. Ultimately, this was the most fun as I could craft out each pop up design! I didn’t really think too much about it and so was rather pleased at the way it has turned out!
