Ideation

Idea 01:

The featured image of this post was a project i did on my own during the holidays where I attempted system art through photos.

So, for idea 1, it’ll be a simple narrative encompassing a subtle meaning.

The story revolves around one main character, the guy in the mask.

At the start of the film, he explores the world without his mask on and  realizes that no one notices him, everyone ignore’s his presence. He tries to attract attention by wearing extravagant and loud clothes but that doesn’t work either.

He then puts on the mask and immediately notices people turning heads to notice him on the streets. He then slowly notices that regardless of what he wears, the mask makes people notice him. so gradually he wears more and more simple clothes.

This idea isn’t complete but its a play on how people tend to put on a mask that isn’t really themselves to attract attention.  Or also stereotypes that people try to conform to by fitting into a mask that society tells you to conform to.

I haven’t decided on the ending of the film, but it might end with him removing his mask, opening his eyes and realizes that everyone else is wearing  a mask too.

Idea 02:

This story is also a narrative. For this story it would revolve around the main character that gets infected by a virus that only he can see. Some geometric or alien-like pattern that spreads across his arm.

He goes to doctors specialists and surgeons but no one believes him, and they try to fix him by fixing his mental state rather than the actual virus.

This film would play on the fact on how sometimes depression or mental illnesses cannot be seen by people on the outside, and only the victim can truly feel and understand whats going on. so that’s why only he can see the virus spreading through his body as a pattern on his skin.

Idea 03:

The third idea I had was just a wild thought that i came up with.

Again it revolves around a main character. He wakes up one day and he realizes that he has lost his voice and no one can hear him anymore.

He freaks out. But then he meets a girl that can hear him, but the twist is that this girl is mute and even though she can hear him, she cant speak.

The film then explores the relationship of these two individuals, how they work around this communication breakdown and how they get closer as they spend more time together.

  1. I find all three ideas very interesting, but I like the second idea the most. I think it would be interesting to see how the patient and the people around sees an illness differently, interested to see how you portray their perspective differently.
The third idea is also pretty interesting but it sounds more like a telepathy thing? So can the two main character communicate through any other way such as writing or texting or hand gestures?

    1. I like the second Idea as well. The idea that the patient and the doctor has different perspective of the situation is interesting. For example the patient could be trying his best to describe the alien markings on his arms and we see the markings through his perspective but when we swap to the doctor’s perspective, there is nothing on his arm and he obviously thinks that the patient is being ridiculous.

  2. I feel like all three of your ideas are pretty high concept and because of that they’re very interesting to read right off the bat, but I would be concerned that when you go into development you might realize that it’ll be hard to write scenes to illustrate the struggle of the respective protagonists and to fill out the middle of your stories? Like if you boil it down (based off what you wrote here),
    1. will be just a lot of clips of someone walking and getting stared at. Maybe a VO for protagonist voice.
    2. Other than freaking out about his “disease”, does this affect the character life in other ways? If not it’ll be clips of it growing and him simply freaking out. Also, the art direction to make convincing medical scenes is super hard haha.
    3. After the initial novelty of their communication, how does their relationship progress. Romantically? Comedically? Both? How do they use their “powers”, and how does it affect them individually.

Maybe if you try to flesh out each of your ideas a bit more and really nail down what kind of film it’s gonna look like, it’ll be easier for you to choose based off practicality or interest. Still interesting concepts though! I never think of these kinds hahaha.

P.S. Maybe the first one could be an experimental film/a filmed social experiment where like your photography project, someone stands in the middle of somewhere with a mask for a decently long period of time, and record the reactions of the crowd. Or you could make characters interact live in the crowd and attach some meaning to all of that. Just a random thought! 🙂
