Nightscape

This shot was taken at the bus stop where spotlights were placed at the roots of the trees, shining up onto the palm trees. I chose this image as it shows the apparent positions of the trees and lightings and furthermore, the different tones of shades interest me to try as my colour study. It allows me to picture how my paper-cut will be like as the closest subject to my point of view will stand out more than the background like the streetlights.

During my colour study, it was challenging for me to paint the texture and colour gradients of the leaves and trunks of the trees. The strokes of the each individual leaves from the palm tree are to be detailed and neat, showing its sharp edges. I tried using dark blue for the sky however, it did not turn out well as it cannot stand out through the large tree. Thus I added a little white to the blue to make it brighter. This consists of both warm and cool colours on the different parts of the image.

For paper-cut, the challenging part was the leaves! I cut the edges of the paper to create the leaves’ outlines. There are different layers of leaves on the top left so I tried cluttering and overlapping the leaves to create a 3D effect. For the sky, I chose a darker blue but it did not stand out among the large tree thus I chose a lighter blue instead. Pinning the pieces together and deciding which has to be the upper layer turns out to be fun and the result was cool as it popped up and became a 3D image!
