Media Art Nexus: Mood board and Concept

Concept:  Galatic Fantasia

I was inspired by a photo I took when I was experimenting with trailing light photography and decided if I can create a similar effect but convert it into a video abstract effect.

Instead of taking the blue approach, I wanted to make it evoke a feeling of a cosmic spectrum instead.

Colour Mood board:

After creating my mood board, I realised that I would need another for effects that I am inspired by and want to use them to create the results I visualized.

Effect Mood board:

However, I realised that just having space effects is not rhythmic nor is it abstract, thus I wanted to experiment with other effects and elements to see if I can re-create an abstract galaxy while using the colour mood board.

Tutorials and Inspirational videos:

1. Galactic effect tutorials

2.  The video teaches me how to create smoke digitally. Although I do not have Houdini, this gave me some insight on how to apply this on Maya to perhaps create something similar.

3. These three videos will help me create the effect I want to achieve in my concept by combining the things that were thaught inside.

5. Lastly, I would like to add some moving bokeh to enhance the concept.

Project 4. The “Breathing” Self-Portrait

1)Artist Statement/Concept

Concept:
First person perspective to third person perspective
Cut into close up to show details while zooming out to show the whole world

In order to give a more immersive feel to the audience. by making the world more lively and moving. Bringing them into whole new space and giving them an invincible taste of how the weather, temperature and sound might be in this environment.

I wanted the work to be subtle however moving at the same time in order not to make it seem too overwhelming till its distracting. Thus I did not animate the characters and I took away the brightly lit dragons, replacing them with black instead. So that the animation of the environment can be the focus.

2)Technical Decisions and issues

Some technical decisions I made during the edit was deciding how to move each layer. Such as the camera movement, the character position and the midgrounds slight movement.

During the process, I learnt a new method of importing photoshops timeline into after effect. By converting the saved individual png frame and putting them into a file. Afterwards converting the file into an image sequence by dragging it into AE and looping the sequence to 200.  This gave me the effect I wanted, an example in the video was the waterfall and the water ripples.

Some issues I had were the rendering time for this piece.

5) Artist Reference:

Witcher 3 – Introduction ( Camera movement reference )

Trying to understand and get inspired by camera movement composition, I decided to use this video as an example of how to capture the moment in a more dynamic way.

Photoshop 3d – Artist WLOP ( Layer study )

This artist also showed something similar however instead of telling a story. They only used slight movement to enhance the depth of the composition. Making it more immersive.

Garden of Words ( Movement reference )

Lastly, I decided to refer to something more similar to my concept which is an environment. Like the movement of water or the slight movement of something in the background.

Project 3: Found Narrative – Unretrievable

30 Sec Video

1 Min Video

1)Artist Statement/Concept

I wanted to create a take on a surreal and abstract way of expressing death and how it is irreversible.

The story starts out with a man trying to retrieve his dead lover, by listening to a legend that you can do so by going in the deep.

However during his journey to find his dead lover, he encounters sharks and revengeful dead souls.

In the end, he finally found his lover, but when he tries to take her back with him.

He was woken up by being left alone stranded in the middle of the ocean.

I placed this clip in to show the surrealism in this universe.

This scene is to show that he is imagining his dead lover and he did not actually meet her yet.

When he wants to go back with her, reality shows that it was not possible and her is still alone.

2)Technical Decisions

Transitioning and cuts:

I tried to match the danger and sound with 2 elements. The dead skeletons and the shark. Both having their mouths wide open.

While I had short cutscenes like a blink of an eye with a drop of a water. To express being awaken.

Audio – some decisions I made during the audio is how to stack the layers and make it more convincing.

Especially my voice, I tried to echo it to make it seem distant like a memory.

3)Before/After

Since I am talking about death I made the scene feel more cold and unwelcoming by tinting the clip blue.

For this scene, I had to adjust the water’s colour in order for it to flow together for the next clips to match.

4) References

  • Woodkid – I Love You MvIn the video, there would be a voice narrating the event that is taking place in the video. Speaking about their own monologue out loud and expressing their feelings through the script.

5)Voice Over Transcript

Some told me that by going below

I would be able to retrieve the dead

I have to go despite the odds

6)Descriptive Text Premise

A man stands at the edge of the shores and was washed away by the waves.
He begins to sink into the ocean slowly with his eyes closed, a lady was seen kissing him on the cheek. He was then seen alone curled up in a ball when his eyes open and there was a sound of a drop of water. A shark also opened its eyes, and the man could be seen running away from it on sandy rocky coral beds. The man than met the blonde woman again and they both circled each other. Till they were seen bubbling up to the surface. The man gasped out of the water and was again seen alone in the middle of the ocean.
