4D Foundation – Scale and Framing : Exercise 1

CLARA!!!!

Partner/Model : Clara

Objective:

Being Natural, hanging out with a friend and being silly together.

Inspiration:

Clara’s expressions are the most naturally distinct when put in an unpredictable situation or predicament.

Chosen 3 photographs:

1. Anxiousness

Description/Process:

We went to the handicap elevator as Clara was afraid of it and is anxious for what was to come.

2. Nervousness

Description/Process:

After she pressed the button and the lift jerked to a halt, she made a excited but nervous looking face.

3. Surprise

Description/Process:

Thinking of what would surprise her. I decided to use the pond outside as a catalyst to create this shot. I made her squat close to the water and as she was focusing on the lens, I quickly splash some water in her direction. Surprising her while I quickly press the shutters.

Study:

Scale: Which shot can have the most impact and focus on the models expression

Framing / cropping : Bluring the background helps to let the viewer focus on the subject up close. The lighting also helps play a part in highlighting the details and where the eye should focus on first. Cropping out the rest of the body, forces the viewer to look at the face instead of elsewhere, as that is where most of the action is happening.

Things to do in order to create such shots:

  • Creating Fear will create excitement and expectations.
  • Surprise / unexpected / ridiculous scenario
  • Being Silly (e.g. Making really close up shots, lazily rolling down stairs or just hanging off the back of the stairs)
