4D: Project 4 – Research

a) identify the subject, form, context and content of each artwork

Luminale 2012 Frankfurt – Osmo by Loop.pH

1a) Light and enclose space installation

Summary:

“Osmo was first inflated below the A13 flyover for Light Night Canning Town in London curated by The Brick Box for the 2014 theme of ‘The Fire and the Stars’, centred on the ancient tradition amongst many communities of gazing into flames and up at the stars, whilst telling stories and freeing our creativity.

Visitors were invited to step into a monumental silver sphere with a projected universe held within its interior made from reflective silver mylar – a NASA space material.

For many inhabitants living in dense urban areas, the chance to gaze upon the night sky is near impossible with tall buildings and light pollution obscuring the view. The design team used a map of the constellations to chart nearly 3000 stars and planets to re-create the cosmos.”

Forest of lights by Sou Fujimoto

2a) Light reflections and sounds installation

Sou Fujimoto unveils “forest of light” installation for COS

b) compare and contrast the artworks and discuss the differences and the similarities in the use of time in each artwork

Differences:

Osmo Forest of Light
 Enclosed area  Not enclosed
No sound  Sound affects the movement
the installation moves naturally  Intentional movements
Viewers can sit and watch  Viewers have to walk around

Similarities:

Osmo Forest of Light
Both use light
Not much movement is needed to interact
Calming and not intense

How will this affect the time?

The slow process changes of the light make the audience observe it and this takes time.

Because it is not intense, viewers have time to reflect and think of what the artist wants to convey.

Thus the audience can slowly appreciate the installation.
