Assignment 1: Reality vs Illusion

Reality vs illusion

Reality vs illusion

the illusion here is about a old lady who is young at heart sees that she is still a young lady in the mirror. However, in reality, she looks old with wrinkles and aged spots.

The illusion is in vibrant colors done with some water colors, while the reality is in black and white in pencil shading to show the distinct difference. Colors means its beautify and good to be young.

Final Piece and development

For my final piece, I has chosen Li Ang as my partner. After interacting with Li Ang, as a new friend mine, I have found out that he has a wide range of interest and a little confuse about what he really likes and what his passion in his life. However, one thing that he is sure is that he likes freedom (the feeling of being free). Hence, I had decided to do his portrait with an element of freedom inside.

Experiment 1

I started off with the idea of splash paint, because i think that splash paint can express freedom. So I started experimenting the splash paint. First, I outline the face using light pencil markings and later try to bring out Li Ang’s facial features through splashing water paint on paper. After some experimenting, I found it hard to control the splash paint to get what I want. Also, the fact that the portrait itself look awkward and weird when I tried to make it a realistic one. Then, I moved on to find other options.

Experiment 2

Later on, I tried to do the portrait in a abstract manner with one-line drawing using marker. Also, I tried it with splash paint to bring out the freedom. But, the end product appear to be funny, instead of freedom.

Experiment 3

Finally, I found the best way to represent freedom in my final piece, which is the scribble drawing. I used markers to scribble on paper freely and slowly tracing out the features of Li Ang’s face. Then I tried the different compositions by splashing some  light colors as the background to fill up the empty spaces. However the outcome effect is not what I want. file-14-11-16-12-31-16-am

My Final piece

As I continue trying out different compositions, I finally settled down with the above composition. I scribbled the whole A2 paper fully using marker of different thickness in trying to bring out the facial features. The reason for filling the whole paper with scribble is to show “freedom all over” with no limit. Then I used different skin colors water paint to bring out the face and the toning. The reason I chose this happy laughing face is to show that Li Ang is happy that he has freedom. Lastly, this scribble way of drawing also represents my impression towards Li Ang – confused by his while range hobby, not knowing what he really likes.

First piece: Rhythm of Dance by Ho Ho Ying (1959)

Emphasis can be seen in this art piece, there is only dancers and nothing else in the center of this art piece shows great emphasis on the dancer, and the simplicity of this piece.

Movement are also shown as the figure of the dancers in the center are more discrete and larger, and the dancers at the sides are more faded and smaller in size. This presents foreground and background which allows my eyes to move from the center to the two sides, producing a line sights.

Repetition. The abundant of dancers and overlapping of different gestures shows repetition in the art piece, as it makes the painting more active.

It is also balanced as dancers are in a triangular form in the center of the piece.

Contrasting colors are used to bring out the dancers from the background, where dancers are bright, mainly in white, and the back ground are dull, mainly in black. It also has some warm colors, which shows the enthusiasm and passion of the dancers. The glimpse of yellow is like the spot light shining onto the dancers while they are performing, giving more excitement to the piece.

Therefore, I feel the passion and enthusiasm towards dance. The dancers are different in their gestures, yet uniform in their goals. from the piece. Perhaps, the artist was trying to express the greatness about dance and how spotlighted dancers were in his time.

Second piece: Here They Come! By Koeh Sia Yong (1965)

I can see balance as the painting is eventful in every corner. The emphasis is on the front where two men are about to move their stall while seeing the police(maybe) coming. It also allows the movement of eyes from the foreground to the background buy decreasing the size of the object as it goes backwards.  This panting also shows a variety of event happening by showing different gestures of the people. The artist also uses warm color to bring out the close relationship between these people in the painting.

I feel that the painting is eventful, as many things are happening in both foreground and background. It has warmth because even though the people in the paining looks frightened and running away, but they are not alone. The artist might want to show the unit-ability of life when he painted this as people does not have a protected environment to start their business and earn a living.

Comparing the 2 piece

First piece is abstract and the second piece is real.

How the 2 paintings are expressed differently?

In the First piece, dancers are expressed in aggressive strokes of brushes making a dancing gesture, without the details of the dancers such as facial expression and clothing. While, in the second piece, the characters are expressed in realistic and detailed drawing, allowing the viewers to feel the characters through their expression and gestures.

Both paintings use the same medium, oil paint, but the style of painting are totally different as the first uses aggressive paint stokes and the second uses paint to bring out really humans and objects.

file-20-9-16-3-23-38-pmMy drawing is the third one. I uses a lot of bright colors to emphasis on the caterpillar being stepped by the heels.
