My Final project is a trilogy of my own Chinese style comics called “屠龙传 Dragon Slayer”. My inspiration derives from classic Hong Kong comics “老夫子 Old Master Q” which bought me into having the interest to draw. I have decided to draw a short comic that is very common in the old Hong Kong magazines that my Uncle collect from the 1980s. Being a fan of the comics due to it’s fantansy and mythology beliefs and the actions filled theme. I have decided to create my own style.

These are the processes as I explored on the different body anatomy and structure of the warriors, on their postures and actions.

Under the advice of Mr Woon Lam, he mentioned that I should copied images from the comics – “风云” Fung Wan, a Hong Kong Wuxia man hwa comics that revolves with the theme of action, mythology and fantasy since I am going to portray a warrior who is also a swordsman hence his posture, composure and way of holding a sword is very important.

Next, the animal, horse. A swordsman is incomplete in a chinese comic without his companion, which is the horse. Similarly, these are the sketches of the horse’s anatomy, postures and relationship with human that I drew and also copied from the comics to understand how it can work in my comics.

Next, the mythological creature, dragon.

Perspectives and format of the drawing to show how the dragon descend down from the sky. Originally I have wanted to show the dragon to be at the front and the horseman with his back but I have decided to change the perspective to show the dragon as it creates more dynamic to show how the dragon actually descend down from the sky to meet the horseman on the ground. The dragon is travelling down to have a combat with the horseman who is reaching up towards the sky for the dragon. It tells a story of how both parties are actually going into the familiar terrains and combat boundary of their opponents. It will be interesting to see how reaching out of their comfort zones will create a different perspectives.

Practice with charcoal drawing.

Rough sketches to depict the direction that I want to portray, dragon looking down at the horseman with the horse standing on it’s hind legs getting ready to combat.

Me trying to use different tonal shading to depict the different scenario to show the mood, the images from top left corner to bottom left corner in a clock wise rotating direction. (Dark, Sun set, Cloudy with sun from the back of the horseman and Cloudy with sun from the back of the dragon)

the images from top left corner to bottom left corner in a clock wise rotating direction. (Raining, Cloudy with sun rays shining down from the opening of the cloud, Night time with full moon from the back of the horseman and Cloudy with sun ray shining at an angle onto the horseman and dragon)

Testing with the different perspectives and designs of the mountains. A tone study of the pencil shading is also done to reflect how much strength must i apply.

Final composition of how I would like to draw my drawing.

Final two sketches experimenting with the strokes of the pencil,  the stroke for the picture is done with the edge of the tip with the movement similar to shading, the texture is more smooth and less sharp.

The stroke for thispicture is done with the tip of the pencil, it is harder and sharper.
