Tonal Design Painting

Day mood – Serene

1 – 30%; 6 – 60%; 9 – 10%

The day is set in the condition of mid afternoon at approximately 1 to 2pm where the sun is high up shining down onto the street.  The sides of the buildings are not as well lit as they are not in contact with the sunlight directly hence they are in darker gradient tone.

The effect of this artpiece initially makes me feel that it is actually raining, and the mood is set to be sad, and I want to make it show that it is actually the effect of the the cloud that is slowly covering the sun ray onto the street and people are still continuing their activity peacefully as the rain has not yet fall, it is just the dark clouds slowly approaching

The harder texture on the building and roof is to signify the idea the sun rays hitting onto the surface with the reflections.

Night mood – Chilly

3 – 35%; 7 – 50%; 9 – 15%

The day is set in the condition of a cold dark night without streetlight, the light provided are from the households and vehicles hence it explains on the lower half of the buildings being in a lighter tone as compare to the top where the light does not reach on.

The harder texture on the background of the sky is to exaggerate the fog in the chilly weather.

By using different gradient and tone, this image seems to set a feeling that it is a very lonely night from my initial view, from the effect that the fog show that it is a dark, chilly and lonely night in a city that does not have street lights, each household have different lights hence resulting in different tone of lightness.

This is a very unique exercise as I can manipulate the colour of black and white to create different tones to reflect the visibility and atmosphere of the day.
