XU TAI YU IS A DREAMBOAT.I draw inspiration from all things ASIAN.
Naturally, I have to tribute my very first layout to the movie, Our Times （我的少女时代）and its iconic quote from the main character, 徐太宇，“麻酱面，麻酱和面要分开”。In translation, he always asks the female character to buy him Sesame Noodles and he has a quirk to eat them separately, so the female character needs to request for the noodles and the sesame sauce to be served separately by the canteen aunty.

(Mahjong Tiles because Sesame Sauce 麻酱 and Mahjong 麻将, are synonyms) While cropping these two elements into the main dish,I’ve managed to execute this layout. THIS ALSO LEADS US TO OUR ACTUAL SCREEN PRINTING PROCESS.

After adding a layer of blue emulsion, I proceed to cure my screen for 16s instead of 18s (as advised by my lecturer, the more intricate the details, the shorter the curing time to capture them more clearly).

After that, we straight up used this powerful jet to “clean” the blue emulsion off. THE REST IS EPIC FUN.

I’m sure those of you familiar with the Killing of Harambe, the Gorilla, will get my layout immediately. Just some context, he was a 17-year-old Western lowland silverback gorilla who was shot and killed at the Cincinnati Zoo after a child fell into his enclosure in late May 2016.

The incident was recorded by a bystander and uploaded to YouTube, where the video went viral and received global publicity. Many called for justice for Harambe, whom in the video, has shown to have brought the child to safety rather than endangering it.

This incident, because of this conflicting moral stance, I felt that it wouldn’t be more apt to be represented with my FAVOURITE FRANCHISE, STAR TREK’S ICONIC QUOTE BY COMMANDER SPOCK.

HERE’S MY INTERPRETATION:With the use of “Great Wave of Kanagawa”, I articulated how Harambe was sacrifice but a group of protestors supporting his killings. A darker tone was overlayed on the dark side, but a sliver lining effect on Harambe showing that he’s in a better place.

One of my favourite movie, OF ALL TIME, has got to be The Help. Till this day, I marvelled at how this film and novel managed to address the Civil Rights movement in such a relatable and heart-wrenching way, without being too overwhelming.

This quote, “You is kind. You is smart. You is important.” has the ability to MAKE ME UGLY CRY. They start and finish with this quote and I URGE YOU to go and watch it. PLEASE WATCH IT.

Making this quote, indeed, was the toughest challenge yet amongst the other four.

I started with something along my comfort zone, true enough, all center aligned with super literal elements.

Eyes = Smart
Kind = Hand caring gesture
Important = Exclamation Mark.

You can see that it’s lacking texture and sort of empty.
So I reach into Ms Shirley’s feedback and thought about what each element meant to me.

Kindness – Anyone recently kind to me? Not really, my mom, but that’s not pushing the boundaries
Smart – I’ve really been following the debate (although not exactly relevant to a Singaporean) lately, Hillary is really an epic role model to all the young girls out there.

Beyond that, I’ve also watched so many past interviewed she had. The harshest critique of Hillary is how cold she is and yet, online, you can readily find interviews of her sweet anecdotes between her relationship with Bill Clinton.

SO I BEGIN TO LOOK TOWARDS THAT DIRECTION

LITERALLY EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS IMAGE IS SO RIGHT. QUESTIONING WITH THAT NERDY SPECS. like “ARE YOU KIDDING ME RIGHT NOW?!” So much sass.

So with the intention to have a dig at TRUMP and his ridiculous hair, I PRESENT MY 2ND LAYOUT.
