ASSIGNMENT 4- RESEARCH

And so, it is assignment 4. The last assignment for this module. I was dreading and yet also looking forward to this one; I know that after effects is really hard, but at the same time I am a bit excited for this assignment as I get to do some actual animation (FINALLY).

So, before assignment 3 even ended, I have already decided to do a drawn animation for this project.

And so here are some of the links I found while researching for this project:

So basically, I have no experience with after effects at all and I have no idea what you can do with it. So I first find videos made using after effects.

20 Amazing Motion Graphic Music Videos

I found this site while searching for inspirations. Below are some of the videos I saw from this site that I really like:

This video shows animated motion graphics, which is nice. I like how they transform objects from the previous scene to  something different, creating a very nice transition. Although I feel that they can do the transition a bit better but I really like this idea.

I like how this one use images and make them very abstract looking, otherworldly. I think this technique can be incorporated with animation to make it even more fantasy-like.

I really don’t know if this is done using after effects or not. If it is then it is really cool as its video is more of a narrative? It isn’t very abstract, and realistic in a way.

This one is really cool also. I like how it incorporate animation with still images/video and they use burn marks to make the animation blend with the images/video.

Techniques that I found out after effects can do

INFINITE ZOOM

– using scale, subtracting clips, using opacity

And here is a video on some of the infinite zooms done on motion graphics:

LIQUID MOTION

Here is the tutorial on how to to it. I am still so amazed by how people can use liquid motion on really intricate illustrations. I am mind blown.

Smoothing Keyframes

I found this while I was editing my video. It is quite cool but also really complicated?

Smoothing Keyframes in After Effects

OTHER EFFECTS I FOUND OUT:

  • scatter
  • snowfall
  • blur
  • particle world- which can enable you to make really pretty lights. like fireflies.
  • turbulent displace
  • keylight, or keying effect
  • using the 3D camera tracker to but the text in film and what not
  • roughen edges

Well, there are just so many effects.

And another video on trends:

I really wonder how do they do those seamless transitions. Did they use the 3D camera? After effects is so cool but also so terrifying.

And also here are some random motion graphic videos that I found. I really love the aesthetic and the transitions of these videos.

And this one is really cool:

And I really like this sketchy animated background effect, even though it is so common from all the videos I watched so far while researching for this assignment.

Well, I am glad that Erwin tells me not to use all these really over the top stuff and just focus on the story. Maybe I will just play around with them during the holidays. When I feel like doing so. Hah.

INSPIRATIONS ON STYLE/ COLOUR SCHEMES

Because I suck at colours, I tried to find out how people uses colours in flat colour illustrations.

She is amazing, making all those flat colours pop. It is not really my taste, but I like how she uses colours to create contrast and what not. I like how she uses just a few colours and yet make it look so colourful.

Now this one is really good too, using a few colours and yet it is so colourful.

The World Of Illustrious Illustrations To Keep You Occupied

And this website shows many illustrations using just a few colours. Which is nice.

Illustrator Spotlight: Daisuke Nimura

And for this one, I really like how she only colour some parts of her drawings and leave the rest white.

Artist :: Chuck Groenink

I like how she use only a bit of shading to harmonise the whole illustration. And she uses different shades of blue to make her work look interesting.

I think what I got from this research is that it is not necessary to use colours that are directly opposite one and other. Like Erwin said, it is all about the in between colours. So, I guess I will be using greys in my colour palette to harmonise all of them together?
