Modular design

Modular design is basically a design method that make use of many small parts called modules, to form a larger structure. The word ‘modular’ comes from the term ‘molecules’.

The great thing about this type of design is that all those little parts can be removed and replaced, and these little parts are functional by their own.

In Architecture:

Capsule Tower

This is a capsule tower in Japan by Kisho Kurosawa. It is made of little capsules; each of them containing just enough room for a bed for people to rest.

Glass Cylinder House

This is a glass cylinder house made of cylinder-shaped glass modules. It is designed by  Cyril Lancelin, and it is meant to be an all-terrian type of housing.

In Product design:

Transforming chair

This chair uses cushions as modules, with a fixed base below. It is really cool as it can be arranged to suit the users’ liking.

Even these pencils I had when I was a kid are modular designs!

I am not sure if this is considered as modular or not, but it looks pretty cool so I will show it here:

Creating a Mood Box (Individual)

Part 1

Team up with your group to play repetitive sounds using the instruments provided.

Record the sounds and edit them via looping only a certain segment for consistency:

A:

B:

Part 2

Choose a sound: I chose A.

Next, break down the sound:

Legend:

Red- Dominant ( Zig-zag blocks)

Yellow- subdominant ( wooden claves)

Green- subordinate ( resonating tone bars)

Part 3

Make some notes for inspiration:

Next, create a sound mood box based on the sound and your notes.
