EGO Documentation 3/Final

My Final works + presentation

For my final 12 composition, I decided to do 6 ‘traditional’ art and 6 digital art so as to take the best of both world ( traditional work takes LOTS of time and need high focus so as not to make mistake and digital work require me to spend more money due to printing, therefore for practical reasons, I would only need to print 6 of them and thus saving quite some money.)

I want to surprise the class and also build up their anticipation by leading them through each equation which gives them a surprise at the end of each equation while having my 11 picture serve as build up to the last one – Me in 5 years (my keystone of the project)

but to do this, I faced a few problem

1 – the moment I hang my work up, it will be exposed

“I can use some Decoy to cover it”

2 – it must be something that is not suspicious so no one will think that there is anything underneath before i tear the Decoy.

“I need to print/draw additional artwork so as to show that “I did some work there so don’t suspect me!!””

3 – The Decoy must not drop down before I tear and must not pull my art work down when I tear it.

“Using double side tape + powder to reduce the stickiness – not too much, not too little…….. kind of hard… i’ll try”

and… TADAAAA!!

THE TRUSTWORTHY ME! NOTHING TO BE DOUBT, MY DECOY IS PERFECT, LOOK AT MY FACE AND YOU KNOW IT! ITS PERFECT!

“HHA HAHH HAHAHHH AHAH AH” IS TOTALLY NOT SUSPICIOUS AT ALL! ITS HUMOROUS!!

Drawing + water colour, Final

Honesty

“I wanted the gold axe… But I am scared” – Zi Feng

Hong sheng is my mascot for honesty, because he looks fierce and suit this idea well, consequence of lying? look at thatttttt~~~

don’t, just don’t. Its all for own good!

Triatic colour, face centralize and at the third to direct attention to the face, then to the axe due to the shininess.

2015-11-12 23.00.23

Optimistic

“You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control the way you think about all the events. You always have a choice. You can choose to face them with a positive mental attitude.” – Roy Bennett

Miaranne – the always smiling girl – atleast in my impression? yeah,

Being optimistic is better than being rich, this is why she is above the gold.

Analogous color, centralized with leading lines surrounding her face, straight forward.

2015-11-12 23.01.27

Humorous

“A picture speaks a thousand words, a joker speaks more.” – Zi Feng

Zhou yang,

Roughly centralized, triangular composition, no background to deliver the clearest and fastest impact when I tear the decoy off.

2015-11-12 23.02.23

Adventurous

“The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams.” – Oprah Winfrey

Ibrahim is very adventurous I think, and i am glad i chose him because his project is all about adventure!!! lucky me.

Triatic colour scheme, rule of third and cartoony way of drawing to deliver the whimsical feel.

2015-11-12 23.00.42

Procrastination

“I am doing at my own pace.” – Isaac Chu

Isaac, drawing himself half way, due to procrastination, well.. he is doing it at his own pace.

Split complimentary, centralize, off balance colour which shift the weight to the left to instill insecurity and imbalance in procrastination (the word, not Isaac)

2015-11-12 23.01.49

Dream Chaser

“Dont wait for things to happen. Make them happen.” – Roy Bennett

Jeremy, the Mauritian. Hunting lion in Africa.. Mauritius is beside Africa and hence this joke(not insult, definitely not) which we talked about it during narrative class, well…. the hunt lion part is by me to follow his joke and yaaaaaaaaaaa… it happens.

analogous colour scheme,  diagonal to make it dynamic, facing down slope instead of up slope to increase the implied speed.

Digital works, final.

More Knowledge

“You want weapons? We’re in a library. Books are the best weapon in the world. This room’s the greatest arsenal we could have. Arm Yourself!” – Russell T. Davies

Madeline is the representation of knowledge, studying in a library which associated with more knowledge,

poly-chromatic colour scheme as background to show that knowledge is vast and there are many subjects which one could learn, knowing only some (books on the table are only teal and pink) which majority of those are which we do not know (colourful books in the background)

Almost rule of third, one on Madeline’s face and another on the books on the table. Relatively warm tone for more human touch as knowledge by itself feels cold unless human touch is added.

1 knowledge e

More Kindness

“Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” – Mark Twain

Munn is very kind as she is in the Cat Management Network and I seen her working for the benefit of cats (getting approval from the office to stick posters in school which educate people about feeding the cats in school)

centralized and triangular composition, leading lines and symmetrical background to bring focus on Munn’s face.

cats are now well rendered because the main focus in the picture is Munn feeding the cats, not the cat itself.

also in this composition, using of warm colour as kindness is always warm.

Save the world

” To get through the hardest journey we need to take only one step at a time, but we must keep on stepping.” – Chinese proverb

Anam as Amazing Anam, the nick name from our class

Triangular composition paired with the rule of third direct all to the face and the world is placed in the background to both save the WORLD and to counterbalance the visual weight as the majority of visual weight is towards the left. yellow is a representation of light and hope therefore it is the majority colour in this picture.

3 save the worlde

Making friends

“Friends come in all shape and sizes.” – Zi Feng

Me in how to train your dragon, substitute me for hiccup and the fish into apple to represent simpler things

Analogous colour of yellow orange and red, having the misty effect in the background as inspired by the “Annunciation” by Leonardo da Vinci to create depth and making it more fantasy like.

two set of leading lines, one on the ground which direct to toothless the dragon in the picture and another implied lines created by the visual site of toothless and me towards the apple which represent the willingness to give to make friends. it doesnt have to be a great gift, a simple, basic apple will be good enough as it is the thoughts that count. again, warm tone as making friend supposed to be a warm process.

4 making friends e

Having fun

“If you are not having fun, You’re doing something wrong.” – Groucho Marx

Me riding a turtle and having fun on an unorthodox adventure.

triatic colour scheme of red blue and yellow along with thick outline to create a cartoony, light hearted picture which is happy and fun.

I am happy in the picture, saw something amazing and pointed to it, leading the turtle to look at it which represented that I hope I could share my happiness with others and wanted those around me to see the happiness that I saw.

5 having fun5e

Me in 5 years

“I want to be the same me in 5 years.” – Zi Feng

The whole class is arranged in a repetitive method which the repeated pattern are all different, this create a picture which one could spend sometime on it, carefully looking at it and also to search for themselves in the picture. everybody is smiling in happiness because I hoped that everyone will be happy in 5 years time, as for me, I want to be the same me.

6 years5e

At the end of this project/module, I learnt that there are many things we could have done with the same project. Interpretation is all that matters and I discarded my progress and started all over again in all projects of 2D, sometime it is essential not to have too much attachment to our own work and progress in order to get some improvements. Also, I learnt that in art, the language will be the same… like for history of art, it is not only ‘history’ of art, I applied so many things I learnt in the history lesson in 2D and I also applied what i learnt in 4D and FD into my 2D projects, when I think about it, its kind of fun to link all of them up and use the theory altogether to create a “simple composition”!!!

EGO Documentation 2

New direction for this project, I need to re think all my ideas again.

Starting from how to depict my ideas using my classmate, i gave myself direction to choose from, maybe i can choose from generic ideas like for example metaphoric, a heart of gold i could use someone and lots of gold? brave as lion with someone and an lion in it?

Thinking about this, there is an inside joke between Jeremy and me, because he is a Mauritian which is beside Africa, I would disturb him by telling him to go hunt lion in Africa.. maybe i could use this idea.

2015-11-03 21.18.09

A list of ways to do my work in.. i could do one medium for each box, making 12 medium in total, maybe?

or i could choose 2 mediums and do a 6 – 6 so that it would have a general theme to it hence clearer message since it is the classmate in the picture i want to emphasis, not my art.

2015-11-03 21.18.13

brainstorming of ideas i could use for my final, those boxed out is what i chose and V1 and V2 meant version 1 and version 2 which i think it would be a better idea.2015-11-03 21.18.212015-11-03 21.18.25

In conclusion, my 4 equation are –

Honesty + Optimistic = Humorous (me)

Hong sheng in “the honest woodsman” + Marianne in her cheerful smile = Zhouyang as himself (will be funny as it is)

Adventurous – Procrastinating = Dream chaser (better me)

Ibrahim in Adventure Time – Isaac doing things halfway = Jeremy chasing lion with a spear in Africa

More knowledge x More kindness = Save the world (ideal me)

Madeline studying x Munn feeding cat = Amazing Anam

Making friends + Having fun = Happy me (me in 5 years)

Me trying to make weird friends + Me doing abnormal fun things = whole class smiling cheerfully.

5 years1

It is kind of hard to rearrange everything to make it organised having me in the middle with 22 people in our class, so I added Shirley to make it 23 and I could make it into 22 + 1 = 11+1+11 and therefore arrange it nicely.

Next post will be my final works.

Ego Project, 4 Equation about Me, Improved me, Ideal me and Me in 5 years

the first thing i thought of for this project is to have my target audience to resonate with what I want to express,

and it is OK for others to not feel what i want to express or even totally don’t understand my work because that is not important, my priority will be my target audience.

2015-11-03 21.17.44

I divided myself into category so that i can pick and match any two to form any equation,

Example 1 – Humorous + Forgiving = Friendly

Example 2 – Pride – arrogant = confident

Example 3 – Unpredictable x opportunistic = bright future

i think this it a good way to start my project as it gives me lots of possibility while still being me.

2015-11-03 21.17.582015-11-03 21.17.50

2015-11-03 21.18.02

The better me, Ideal me and me in 5 years are all made up from the pieces in the “ME” equation.

Since this is a project about colour, i will start by linking a word that I want to use to a colour scheme for the feel that the colour has.

colour scheme

Arrogant/Confident in illustrator.

my initial idea was to vector the shapes and cut out different colour of paper to make it into pop up graphic.

like confidence and arrogance will be using the same picture, having confidence stacked up(additional/convex)  while arrogant being cut away(left over)(subtraction/concave)

because i think confidence and arrogance is basically very similar but one is positive and one is negative.

confident

After showing Shirley my work, she mentioned why use human when there ate more interesting way to depict confidence/arrogance and hence i redo it into a lion

lion are proud.

Confident process

Learn more skills

for this while equation, I wanted to use game as i think that many classmates could resonate with my work as we play some game of some sort during our life,

i also wanted to use pixel art as it seems promising due to the rich colour scheme and not a main stream medium so I wanted to try something different.

this is not a screen shot from the famous online game Maple Story.

it is a template from maple story and edited it. any maple player will know it is impossible to get this  skills in the game(heavily edited).

the stolen skills = skill I will learn

the Equipped skills = skills i learnt.

Skill

below are some pixel art i got from the web and intend to use it to construct my composition.

34x34icons180709362213DS - Fire Emblem Awakening - Skill IconsDS - RPG Tsukuru DS RPG Maker DS - Skill Icons

I wanted to use pixel art as a set of composition because i think it is really different and it works since my idea is More skills + kindness which both could be represent in pixel art.

Kindness

For this, i want to make my own avatar in the game to represent me doing some kind things

me 1

This is just for fun.

Honesty and Humorous

2015-11-03 21.18.47for the honesty, i decided to use a childhood story of mine to depict honesty, but with a twist.

the story is the honesty woodman, as of wikipedia

“The woodcutter who accidentally dropped his axe into a river and, because this was his only means of livelihood, sat down and wept. Taking pity on him, the god Hermes (also known as Mercury) dived into the water and returned with a golden axe. “Was this what you had lost?”, Hermes asked, but the woodcutter said it was not, and returned the same answer when a silver axe was brought to the surface. Only when his own tool is produced does he claim it. Impressed by his honesty, the god allows him to keep all three.”

but in my version, i decided to use the chinese god of fortune, holding axe in both hand and looking fierce while wearing what the god of fortune is not usually seen wearing while using a muscular arm used with the axe to create a gangster feel, like this, no one will dare to lie to him is what i want to show.

For Humorous, instead of showing some funny scene which stands for humorous,

I DECIDED TO MAKE MY TARGET AUDIENCE TO SERIOUSLY LAUGH OUT LOUD DURING MY PRESENTATION, I WANT TO GET THE REACTION FROM MY AUDIENCE.

SOOOOOOOOO.. I decided to draw Zhouyang from our class because he is naturally funny even if he did not try to be funny.

the picture of zhouyang will be one of the highlight in all my 12 composition i think, and because of this, I am inspired to scrap my current progress for a more meaningful project,

I will draw my classmates to represent some quality as it will have the most impact to the class, making them to resonate with my work,

I DON’T WANT TO JUST PRESENT MY WORK FOR GRADE!!!  I WANT MY CLASS TO FEEL, TO FEEL HAPPY, TO LAUGH LOUDLY, TO UNDERSTAND THAT BEING HAPPY IS IMPORTANT, TO FEEL THAT FRIENDS ARE IMPORTANT.

And thus, I scraped all my work up to this point except for the 2 sketch above and rework everything for the greater good.

to be continued………

Understanding Color – Youtube video

~I only summarized what was mentioned in the video and do not own anything here~

~All images here are screenshots of the video~

14

Saturation

  • Don’t overdo it – lots of bright saturated color looks incredibly fake and leave no time for the eye to rest, hence irritating when view for sometime.

1

  • Guide viewers by using bright saturated color sparingly  a line of bright red along the back guide the direction of camels

2

  • Use it to tell a story – animated flim used alot of bright saturated color for a sense of animation

3

  • Affects mood – brightness and saturation  = happy, dull and desaturated = sadness

4

  • Draws attention to something – highly saturated point is used for viewer to anchor

5

Color Harmony

Monochromatic

  • only one colour
  • Best for single subject
  • atmospheric

6

Analogous

  • easy on the eye
  • peaceful, comfortable mood
  • seen alot in nature

7

Triadic

  • best for cartoon/ surreal
  • hard to pull off

8

Complementary

  • very popular
  • naturally pleasing on eye
  • use one color predominantly – the weaker colour

9

Split complementary

  • More creative freedom
  • Feels lively/ joyous

1011

Tetratic (Double Complementary)

  • best used for foreground/background – a set at foreground/ a set at background
  • hard to pull off
  • never 25% for each

2D project 2 – FINAL

Selected work for Final Submission

After doing so many versions of the compositions, I realized that there is no end to editing a picture to make it better because there are always things to change, to add or even new and better ideas. So in the given time, this is the best 4 I could produce. in terms of composition or the story behind it.

Humpty Dumpty sat on the wallHD sat on the wall 2smallThe foreground of Humpty Dumpty is dark to contrast the light background and make it stands out from the composition. Because Humpty is sitting on the wall, it is stationary while the lady in the picture is being repeated diagonally to instill movements and direction which counteract the stillness of the image. The series of lady is also being tone to the similar tone to Humpty to balance the visual weight in the picture.

Humpty Dumpty had a great fallHD had a great fall (2e1 SmallHumpty Dumpty had a great fall, Fall as in Autumn. In this composition, the brightness of Humpty is adjusted to a lighter tone to contrast the dark background, Humpty is also being placed in the middle of the composition while having a circle of fallen leaves which help viewers to focus in the middle of this composition as there are very little detail by the side of the picture. there are also outer glow in both Humpty and the lady to bring both of them appear to pop out from the background.

All the King’s horses and all the king’s men.PrintSymmetry is used to give the feeling of stability as “all the king’s horses and all the king’s men” is supposed to give a vibe of pride, order, security and strength, all of this is best shown with the stability which symmetry gives. Proportion of the soldier is being adjusted to make the composition more interesting even though there are only two element in it which is the soldier and the horse, by the using different size soldiers to fill up the picture, it is giving a sense of fulfillment, both side of the repeated soldier is also darken to make the most symbolic piece in the middle to stand out.

She gave them some broth without any breadgave some broth without bread 4Again, The subject is being placed right in the middle as i think this is the clearer way to bring focus to the message that i want to bring across. in here, the bread is a missing piece in a pan filled with vegetable, this symbolized that there is a lack of bread. repetitive patterns of pots and pans is used as background and greyed out to reduce the contrast of the pan to the backgound, making the bread to stand out even more as it is the only with white base.

2D project 2 – Rhymes.

At first, i thought that i will only need to do the Humpty Dumpty rhyme. So my first reaction is to check out what the rhyme is….

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the king’s horses and all the king’s men
Couldn’t put Humpty together again

so first thought is important and so i am going to elaborate it.

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,

Humpty Dumpty is supposed to be an egg, so he sat on the wall.. but what is an egg doing on the wall? is he a young egg? teenage egg? adult egg or old egg?

Humpty dumpty could be an egg, or could be not an egg..

  • 1 – if he is not an egg, then what is he? – old man? – some naughty boy who likes to climb walls?
  • 2 – actually i think it would be better because humpty dumpty is depicted as an egg in our culture, so by using some “common sense” to make my message clearer.. atleast viewer wont go “where is your humpty dumpty in the picture”
  • 3 – so if humpty dumpty is an egg, what is he like? i personally like to depict him as an old man. because the older they are, the more story could be told.
  • 4 – an old egg. what kind of egg is he? i would like to have some sense of humor in the personality which are easily shown through a single picture, maybe a lecherous old egg? maybe something from 50 shade of grey? it will bring contrast to the story as it supposedly was an childhood rhyme, but bringing some adult thing into it makes it interesting.
  • 5- so what is Humpty Dumpty doing on the wall? reading a book? escaping from something? peeping? yeah peeping might be a good one.

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

so the common sense of this sentence is that humpty dumpty fell down from the wall. i think it is boring so instead of using the “fall” as in “falling down”… how about the “fall” as in “autumn”? just changing the different meaning of the same word will change the whole sentence.

Humpty Dumpty had a great Autumn.

  • how? how is great great? Great as in Awesome…. so how do i depict awesome? thinking of the back ground story of humpty dumpty – old lecherous egg, what will be awesome to him? the answer is clear.
  • something to do with maybe drugs? woman? 50 shade of grey(this project is in black and white so i think this will be quite nice)

All the king’s horses and all the king’s men.

  • Repetitive nature due to the King’s horses and King’s men
  • symmetry could be bought out using the repetitive pattern of the horses and men
  • high contrast will be a good way to show the difference between the subject and background.

This is when I knew that we are not bounded by only one rhyme, we could do all the rhymes and choose which is the best 4 among it.

so I approached this project differently, to see which sentence of the rhymes could be interesting and i could visualize the outcome of the sentence.. so out of the 12, I chose the following.

The cow jumped over the moon.

There was an old woman who lived in a shoe.

She had so many children, she didn’t know what to do;

She gave them some broth without any bread;

Then whipped them all soundly and put them to bed.

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

All the king’s horses and all the king’s men

I decided to work on photoshop and illustrator to see what i could do with them and edit it along the way

The cow jumped over the moon Version 1

the cows jump over the moon 2Emphasis on the cow and the moon, with little detail other than the cow, the moon and some stars. high contrast of white with black to make the moon and cow stand out. straight forward idea with element of the picture centralized and in the box (no element is being cropped off)

The cow jumped over the moon Version 2

the cows jump over the moonThe main cow is being tilted to give a movement to it, again, no element is being cropped off from the picture and every thing is constrained by the box, however the cow is being duplicated to substitute the stars to make the composition more interesting.

The cow jumped over the moon Version 3the cows jump over the moon 3Different approach, the main focus will be the cow where the head is in the middle of the picture, the moon is slightly cropped to shift the overall visual weight of the picture towards the middle. I like this composition however i could only choose four and this is my fifth.

There was an old woman who lived in a shoe.

Old woman lived in a shoeMy first thought about this sentence was ” what was there other than an old woman? did she have a partner? perhaps an old man?”

the contrast of an old grumpy woman and a smiley old man could have a background story as usually shoes comes in a pair, and the personality of the old woman and the old man is a big contrast but placed side by side, in the same shoe. personally i think this is interesting.

She had so many children, she didn’t know what to do.she had so many children she dont know what to doThe background of the picture is repeated pattern of a boy and a girl which colours are inverted, while the foreground of this picture shows a woman with a face without expression, centralized in the picture for a stable feel.

She gave them some broth without any bread V1

Print

Repeated patterns of pots, bowls and some pans as background to bring out the implied lines of bread which symbolized that there are no bread present. the breads are also placed repetitively and in the center with different orientation for a slightly interesting composition, however in this, the bread is not clear.

She gave them some broth without any bread V2

gave some broth without bread 2

To bring make the bread clearer, round circles are formed around the bread which i think the bread in this is too obvious and there is no implied lines anymore.. and after the consultation, maybe one bread at the center is better than 4 bread.

She gave them some broth without any bread V3

gave some broth without bread 3By retaining the four circles, the background was cleared but filled into the circles, the bread is still in the black circle because i like the contrast, however the blank bread is filled with the background but with lesser contrast.

She gave them some broth without any bread V4

gave some broth without bread 4The background tone was darken to bring the focus to the bread.

She gave them some broth without any bread V5- Final

gave some broth without bread 4Instead of an empty black circle to contrast the bread, a photo of a pan with vegetables are use for a human touch to make the picture warmer than just vector, this very well contrast with the vector background and i think this is much better than before. I like this composition and this will be chosen.

Then whipped them all soundly and put them to bed.

she whipped them soundlyRepeated patterns of beds are used while in the foreground, there is an action and diagonal lines used to make the composition more dynamic.

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall V1

HD sat on the wall

Humpty Dumpty in the picture is still and the woman in the picture is moving in direction towards the center and to the corner, repeated use of the woman is to balance out the weight of Humpty Dumpty as he is being cropped by the box and feels heavier, if only one woman was used, the picture will look heavier on the left.

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall V2

HD sat on the wall 2smallHD in the previous composition is not dark enough and blend into the background, therefore contrast is increased to make HD pop out. I like this composition and therefore chose it as one of my final.

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall V1

HD had a great fallHD is placed in the center of the composition and the circle was placed to help viewers to focus in the middle because the leaves is pulling attention from HD. there is also a contrast between the background of leaves and HD as there is a dark outline around HD.

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall V2HD had a great fall (2)Again, Hd is placed in the middle, a silhouette of a girl with a whip is added into the picture, i liked this more as the face of the HD is more comical and there is a lecherous face there, however the contrast of HD and the background is too low.

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall V3

HD had a great fall (2inverted the background colour to black to make the contrast of HD bigger and more focused. outer glow is also used to ensure that both HD and the silhouette stands out. there is still room for further improvements.

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall v4

HD had a great fall (2e2

the addition tree is removed for a clearer picture, the mass of leaves is shrink to leave more empty space and therefore better focus, however the contrast of HD face is too low and there is a lost of detail.

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall V5

HD had a great fall (2e1 Small

changed HD position from sitting to standing, increased the detail on the face which further shows that he had a GREAT FALL. I like this composition and this will be chosen.

All the king’s horses and all the king’s men V1

all the KM and KH 2symmetry, repetitively pattern with different sized of kingsmen, the biggest one in the middle and the 2 giant horse capture the attention of viewer, there are also empty spaces to enhance the contrast of subject and the background, however there is little human touch and the composition seems cold.

All the king’s horses and all the king’s men V2

all the KM and KH 3

the background is changed to a castle, however i feel this is a weaker idea than the previous.

All the king’s horses and all the king’s men V3

all the KM and KHDifferent approach, symmetry, repetitive pattern, harmony is also used. however there is also little human touch as it is all vector.

All the king’s horses and all the king’s men V4Print

lower the contrast the kingsmen on the side to bring further focus to the main subject. I really like this composition and this will be chosen.

Principles of design

Unity/Harmony

When all elements are in agreement, a design is considered unified. No individual part is viewed as more important than the whole design.

  • Perspective: sense of distance between elements.
  • Similarity: ability to seem repeatable with other elements.
  • Continuation: the sense of having a line or pattern extend.
  • Repetition: elements being copied or mimicked numerous times.
  • Rhythm: is achieved when recurring position, size, color, and use of a graphic element has a focal point interruption.
  • Altering the basic theme achieves unity and helps keep interest.unityd99797ed2b52c3cee5e891d6cc17e2ce

Balance

It is a state of equalized tension and equilibrium, which may not always be calm.

  • Symmetry
  • Asymmetrical balance produces an informal balance that is attention attracting and dynamic.
  • Radial balance is arranged around a central element. The elements placed in a radial balance seem to ‘radiate’ out from a central point in a circular fashion.
  • Overall is a mosaic form of balance which normally arises from too many elements being put on a page. Due to the lack of hierarchy and contrast, this form of balance can look noisy but sometimes quiet.BALANCESymmetrical example in real life:
  • cap1

The left and right of the architecture is mirrored with the central plane which made the building symmetrical.

  • Asymmetrical example in art:
  • g hockney acrylic

Hierarchy

contains elements that lead the reader through each element in order of its significance.

Images should be expressed starting from most important to the least important.

Example of hierarchy in art:

Duccio_maesta1021

The Proportion and placing enthroned Madonna and Child make it the most important subject, followed by those wearing red, and lastly to those in the background.

Example of hierarchy in typography:vh_3

The most importation information to be read first with the biggest font, and at the top,

Secondly most in sequence information second and medium font and lastly the information that should be read last having the smallest font and placing at the bottom.

Scale/proportion

relative size of elements against each other can attract attention to a focal point.

When elements are designed larger than life, scale is being used to show drama.

SCALE PRO

Example of scale in photography:

h_scale-0-1280-0-1024

The scale of the finger is way larger than the figurine, its is automatically processed by the brain that it is a small figurine instead of it is a giant hand.

Examples of Proportion in Sculpture:

_63152331_06-quenum-en-jouant-le-gros

The proportion of the arm is way larger than it should be for that small head, it attract attention due to the abnormality of the disproportion.

Dominance/emphasis

created by contrasting size, positioning, color, style, or shape.

The focal point should dominate the design with scale and contrast without sacrificing the unity of the whole.

Examples of dominance/emphasis in Photography:

dominance

A single bright blue raspberry stands out from a crowd of red raspberry, it draws attention to the blue raspberry making the other red raspberry to become the background.

Similarity and contrast

Planning a consistent and similar design is an important aspect of a designer’s work to make their focal point visible

Too much similarity is boring but without similarity important elements will not exist and an image without contrast is uneventful so the key is to find the balance between similarity and contrast.

contrast

Example of Similarity in graphic design:

gestalt-pattern-image

The pattern is repeated, however the colour of a single stickman is different with other to show contrast.

Example of Contrast in Painting:

contrast1

The flower is being emphasis by having a contrast with the black background which makes it stand out.
