Ego – Final

Me, Stressed about school work + Being outdoors = Fun day out kayaking

Being easily anxious and worried, I often stress out due to my school’s workload and trying to balance a work-life balance. Other than being in school, I love being outdoors, especially near the sea. Thus, I always try to make time for kayaking as it is one of my hobbies and just by watching the waves and kayaking at sea really helps to de-stress me a lot!

Me, A creative individual + Studying at NTU ADM = New ideas and inspirations

Since young, I was interested in drawing and crafting. I grew up to enjoy the creative process of making art and studying at NTU ADM was a great chance and opportunity for me to explore new art mediums thus the creation of new ideas and inspirations!

Me, Being broke + A trip to Artfriend to buy school supplies = Eating instant noodles for weeks

Being a full time student, I barely have the time to work on the side thus me being broke on a regular basis. Having to buy art supplies from Artfriend often costs a lot and I would have to resort to eating noodles.

Me, Feeling depressed + Being around my family = Motivation and Strength

Sometimes, when the stress of school becomes too much for me to bear, I would feel depressed but being around my family when I come home from school really helps with cheering me up and thus giving me the motivation and strength to push on for my work.

I’ve enjoyed the process of creating this piece of work as it allowed to explore the use of color schemes and the ability for me to express myself through each of the panels!

Ego – Process

I listed down the 4 equations for my panels before starting on this project. In order to come up with the equations, I thought about the things that meant the most to me in life. This is the list that I came up with:

  • Me, Stressed about school work + Being outdoors = Fun day out kayaking
  • Me, A creative individual + Studying at NTU ADM = New ideas and inspirations
  • Me, Being broke + A trip to Artfriend to buy school supplies = Eating instant noodles for weeks
  • Me, Feeling depressed + Being around my family = Motivation and Strength

Next, I sketched out my ideas to get a rough idea on how the final layout of the panel will be like. After that I did the line art for each of the panels, added shade and color to panels based on the split complementary color scheme.

After the feedback that was given during the consultations, I made some changes like changing the colors and the blending of the line art into the image for the final panels. The initial sketches for the “Stressed Me” panel was me carrying a rock but after receiving feedback, it was more suitable to replace the rock with books and paintbrushes/paint cans as it portrays my school stress more clearly.

Ego – Research

I did some research on color schemes as this project required the use of color harmonies.

In color theory, a color scheme is the choice of colors used in design for a range of media. They are often used to create style and appeal.

There are 8 types of basic color schemes:

  1. Complementary: Complementary or opposite colors from the color wheel
  2. Split Complementary: Three colors—the main color and colors from either side of its complement
  3. Triad: Three colors from equidistant points on the color wheel
  4. Monochromatic: Different shades and depths of a single color
  5. Analogous: The main color and the colors from either side of it on the color wheel
  6. Neutral: Uses a color that has been reduced by adding black
  7. Achromatic: No color—just blacks, whites and grays
  8. Secondary: Green, purple and orange used together

Examples:

  • Red, Yellow-Green and Blue-Green
  • Yellow, Blue-Violet and Red-Violet
  • Green, Red-Violet and Red-Orange

I chose the use of the split complementary color scheme for my panels as it provides the visual interest of a complementary color scheme and allows the use of more colors.

The images above are my references for the color scheme that has been implemented for my panels.

Forest Gump Final

These are the Final 4 Visuals that I have selected for my submission:

First: “I see dead people” – The Sixth Sense

Based off the context of the scene from the sixth sense, I wanted to portray the death that the character sees constantly but at the same time, I wanted to portray the character’s ability to see the supernatural by placing a third eye on the skull instead of placing the grim reaper’s image in the sockets of the skulls. I also changed it to 6 skulls instead of the previous 5 as this movie is all about the “Sixth Sense”

Second: “There’s no place like home”- The Wizard of Oz

Basing it off the context of the story where Dorothy thinks of her uncle and aunt back home at the farm and her yearning to go back home. Thus I placed a farmhouse and tractor on a heart to represent what it truly meant when she said that there’s no place like home.

Third: “There’s no such thing as love. It’s a fantasy.”- 500 Days of Summer

This phrase was mentioned as the main female character felt like that love was never something that is real thus a fantasy. I decided to portray it as something surreal and the two people in the centre, one a sun and the other a moon shows two different people falling in love but everything is nothing but a fantasy.

Fourth: “You had me at hello” – Jerry Maguire

The visuals for this was based off the emotions between the two characters of which before they had the conversation, the man had already captured the woman’s heart thus the phrase you had me at hello. I used a fishing rod, which managed to fish the heart (represents the woman’s heart).

Forest Gump Process

Throughout the process, I went through 2 reviews and brainstorming of visuals for multiple quotes and different versions for one of the quotes to see which works best.

First Review:

The meaning was too literal for the first two (Mean girls and Dracula). As for the Lion King, the idea could be expanded beyond its literal meaning. For the 500 Days of Summer, after the consultation, the feedback given was that since I decided to focus on the aspect of fantasy, the visuals should look more surreal and at the same time, the birds in the current pieces looks too realistic for something that is supposed to be surreal.

Second Review:

I worked on more pieces and followed up on the pieces done for 500 Days of summer and the Lion King.

I pushed the idea further for the Lion King by basing it off the context of that scene where Mufasa (Simba’s Dad) was pushed off the edge by Scar (Simba’s Evil Uncle) into the herd of stampeding wildebeest below causing Mufasa’s death. As for the visuals on 500 Days of Summmer, I made it more surreal through the addition of flowers to signify love and the fishes with eyes as their bodies to show fantasy. I also decided to give two other quotes a try, one from the Sixth Sense and the other from Dirty Dancing.

Based off the context of the scene from the sixth sense, I wanted to portray the death that the character sees constantly but at the same time, I wanted to portray the character’s ability to see the supernatural by placing a third eye on the skull instead of placing the grim reaper’s image in the sockets of the skulls.

As for the Dirty Dancing visuals, it was a literal play on the words.

I continued working on the process and decided to scrap the idea for the Lion King and Dirty dancing. So I started working on another two and finalized my 4 designs with 1 chosen as the Final piece

Forest Gump Research

Before I started on the brainstorming for the 4 visual pieces that I had to come up with, I first started off by researching on various movie quotes.

These are the quotes that caught my interest:

  1. Long live the king. – The Lion King
  2. Oh yes, the past can hurt. But, you can either run from it or, learn from it. – The Lion King
  3. Bond. James Bond – Dr. No (1962)
  4. We all go a little mad sometimes – NORMAN BATES (Anthony Perkins) in Psycho (1960)
  5. “When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.”
    – MAXWELL SCOTT (Carleton Young) in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)
  6. “Jerry, d’you know the human head weighs eight pounds?”
    – RAY (Jonathan Lipnicki) in Jerry Maguire (1996)

  11. I have crossed oceans of time to find you. – Dracula
  12. There’s a 30% chance that it’s already raining. – Mean Girls
  13. You had me at hello – Jerry Maguire
  14. I see dead people – The Sixth Sense
  15. There’s no place like home – The Wizard of Oz

Project 1: My Line is Emo (Final Outcome)

Love: the union of 2 souls in a turbulent surrounding + different tones and spots representing memories

Joy: represents confetti during parties, light marks

Surprise: from light to dark to show how instantaneous the emotion of surprise is

Anger: Sharp edges and quick marks to represent how anger can cause pain

Sadness-Depression: broken pieces, feeling “broken” – I scraped the surface of the paper with a penknife to show the hidden pain

Fear-Anxiety: Irregular patterns to show the lack of focus and being “out of place”, giving a sense of anxiety to the viewer

Project 1: My Line is Emo (Process- Part 2)

I started working towards my final 6 art pieces, of which i experimented with even more mediums and art making tools as shown on the pictures above.

As following, the mark making tools that I used were hamster food, a plastic wrapper and small stones.

I also experimented using blue-tack and a small vase to make the marks as blue tack allows me to create more accurate and intricate marks.

After experimenting with various mark making tools and the attaching an emotion to each of these 36 pieces, I brought it for consultation during tutorial.

After the consultation, I realized that some of my work do indeed have repetitive patterns thus making the work look rigid and not so appealing. Thus, with the comments that the lecturer mentioned during consultation, I made changes and re-did some of the art pieces so as to improve further from my current work!

Project 1: My Line is Emo (Process- Part 1)

For part 1 of this project, I first started with the experimentation of different mark making tools. I brought various items like, various types of sponges, brushes, velcros, markers, pens, spray bottles to try mark making.

I experimented with cross hatching, splatters, shapes and patterns using the mark making tools that i have brought. Of which, I learnt that sometimes some mark making tools would really surprise me with the types of marks that it can create. An example would be the U-shaped coconut fiber brush which gave the marks a fur like look.

I was also given a chance to experiment with lino thus I started to carve out patterns on the lino print to create these marks.  It took me some time before I got used to cutting the lino using the cutting tools but it was a great experienced and really enjoyed being able to experiment mark making using lino!

Mark Making Research

One artist that whose work that I came across while researching was “Cy Twombly”.

His works invokes thoughts and interpretations behind the strokes used while creating the marks. This would be one artist that I will gain inspiration from for my future works.
