Foundation 4D: Project 1a

Hello!

In our very first Foundation 4D class of this semester, we learnt that things are encoded in images for us, the viewers, to decode. So for our first project, we had to create images using the methods of addition, subtraction, substitution and superimposition, and hide our own little messages in them. Below are the four images that I created.

1st piece: Addition

Times Square

“Photos are the only way,

To hold on to what you knew,

Because the moments they show never change,

When the people in them do.”

~e.h.

2nd piece: Subtraction

Sadface

This is an image of a girl, who lost her parents, reminiscing about the happy times she had with her parents. I hope that, upon looking at this, we will remember to cherish the people we have in our life, because we never know when we may lose them.

3rd piece: Substitution

Drink Drive (3)

I substituted the car with a coffin so that the message would be clear: Don’t drink and drive. You may drive yourself to your death.

4th piece: Superimposition

Waterpoint Girl (1)

You know how life gives you too much to handle sometimes and you feel like you’re suffocating and drowning on the inside? This image is a manifestation of that. And hopefully also a reminder that although others may look fine on the outside, they may not always be on the inside.

Final Thoughts

It was initially difficult thinking of a message that I wanted to spread and coming up with ideas on how to manipulate the images to portray the messages clearly, but once I did, it was pretty fun bringing the ideas to life. Photoshop baffled me, since I rarely use it, and I found myself staring blankly at all the tools available -just completely and utterly lost- from time to time. It was, without a doubt, a wonderful learning experience, though, and I’m glad I tried. (Although the watermarks from the stock images do make me a tad bit sad. Haha.)
