In-Class Exercise: Soundwalking

For this activity, Praveen and I set out with no clear idea on the kinds of sounds we wanted to capture. I think we were just mostly drawn to sounds that were distinct and unique in their sound quality.

However, after gathering all the sounds and compiling them, I realised that the sounds we captured were mostly synthetic/man-made. The sounds we recorded were mostly of things related to technology, such as the handicap lift, the vending machine and the electric fan.

In some cases, sounds overlapped, such as in sound clip 5, in the foreground you can hear the thud of a canned drink being dispensed, in the mid ground the sound of coins dispensing and the ‘ding’ of a lift arriving are quite apparent, and in the back ground there is an ambient whirring that really stood out to me.

This reminded me of a video I watched on the disappearance of silence in the world as Praveen and I really struggled to capture clear distinct sounds without any interference in the background from other things that were happening.

Something I would wish to explore next as opposed to the sounds of technology would be sounds from the natural environment! I think it’s quite crucial to capture these precious sounds before they are completely covered by our fast-moving world.
