Micro-Project 1: Creating the Third Space

IMAGES
I set out on the task to discover a space of special significance while keeping in mind that I wanted to capture spaces/objects that challenge the conventional definitions of (physical) space.

Beginning with a more “conventional” space, I decided to capture this image as I felt that the sitting area was a communal space, built for interaction. As humans, we do not navigate the world alone and therefore, sharing space is inevitable. I’d like to think of this communal space as a place for positive exchange of ideas and experiences and therein lies its significance.
Building off on the previous image on “communal space”, this image is then a representation to me of “personal space”. The “objects” I chose to photograph are two hands, in close proximity, yet individual and apart.
This reflects my experience thus far in school, where I’ve encountered so many individualistic, creative people that I have had the privilege to call my friends. However, despite enjoying their company, there are some days that I prefer to have some personal space and keep a distance.

Perhaps an extension of “personal space”, this image of a notebook depicts a “safe space” for me to input any ideas and thoughts. As it is an object I can choose to share with others, or keep for myself, the space is then free from unsolicited judgement.

Maybe this isn’t the best image to represent my thoughts at that point in time, but I wanted to capture an image of a body as I think of the human body as a physical space in which we (our minds, souls, spirits, consciousnesses) inhabit.
Perhaps then there could be another image that depicts the bodily space in relation to the wider, larger, physical architectural or natural space.

With this image, I decided to look into a more literal and literary space. The gaps between words that we call “space”. In this space lies an infinite amount of possibilities – between one word and the next – and it has the power to change an entire sentence, the entire narrative. Space to me then is equal to power and possibilities.

Below are more ideas I had that I decided to portray in videos instead as I was using the Story function on Instagram.

This video is a continuation of the idea that space holds endless possibilities, I decided to video the seconds ticking by on my watch, stopping right before the expected change in the minutes. This video to me shows us on then cusp of a new beginning, a new minute, a new time that holds so much potential.

This is also extremely similar to the last image. However, I decided to do a voice recording as I wanted to explore conversational spaces, or gaps in conversation.
I feel that in the time between a question and its answer lies a myriad of possibilities: the answerer can choose to lie or to be honest, to what extend of either lying or being truthful, the intentions behind a lie perhaps, and the time it takes for the answer to be spoken also speaks a lot about the answerer and their emotional state. Therefore, so many secrets are tucked away in this conversational gap and therefore the outcomes and possibilities are infinite.

This video is a screen recording of me trying to find a route from ADM to my home via google maps. There’s a number of “spaces” in this video. Firstly, ADM as a space in relation to my home, another space. Secondly, the space between here and there. And finally, Google maps as a virtual space that retains information, that maps the physical spaces, that collects and generates data.

#1010ADM

I think the inherent value of a virtual shared space like the #1010ADM hashtag is that it is literally limitless in terms of 1. who can contribute, 2. what they choose to contribute (whether or not it is irrelevant) 3. the quantity in which can be shared. This virtual space is then far bigger in scale than any physical space.

Additionally, the immediacy in which we can arrive in this space is also so key in its appeal that we need not have to travel far to reach our destination – it could very literally be in our back pockets.
Therefore, it is relevant to the concept of DIWO as it is a virtual communal space where ideas can be exchanged in an instant, and conversations are extremely visible for all to view and to engage in (in the comments) and through the rigorous use of the hashtag, a wealth of data can be collected and broadcasted to anyone with the tools to do so.

In terms of how the virtual space may change, there are numerous ways in which that could happen. Perhaps one way is that the platform (Instagram) may shut down or be discontinued, leaving the bank of information to cease to exist if there is no one to archive it. Or maybe the hashtag could be banned or censored by the platform. Or perhaps the hashtag could be hijacked and flooded with irrelevant content that derails its original use. Or perhaps the change is that I could turn from a commonly used hashtag into a stagnant pool of old, obsolete posts.
