4D PROJECT 2 – SOUND & IMAGE

For this project I get to work with Hwee Ann & Clarita and they are like the nicest people to work with. I am glad to have the opportunity to work with them.
Project 2 consist of a class assignment (Image sequencing) then followed by a individual assignment (Sound editing).

CLASS ASSIGNMENT 2

My team started off with brainstorming ideas and throwing out randoms story line. Honestly, we came up with so many ideas its really wasn’t easy to choose. However, we ended up choosing to do on the topic of Eating disorder (which is a part 2 to my sem 1 project )
We applied what we learn from project 1 – character building (A girl with eating disorder vs A girl without )

The film talks about how people lives under the same roof but totally unaware of each other well being. They could be best friend and talks through phone and check on each other social media. You thought you know what’s going on in their life but clearly you don’t. Another message is about how girls are overly obsess with how they look, we are being raised in a society that portraits women to look or feel a certain way. Every article tell us that you need to have long legs, small waist, big chest to be beautiful. Although this might be as cliche as it could be but why isit still happening? / sorry, the issue is rapidly increasing as more women are chasing to be perfect but perfection is just an illusion.

A girl with eating disorder
Sarah is a girl with very low self esteem and really self-conscious of how she looked. She live a double life, the world including her room mate was deceived by her social media persona. People around her thought she was living a “healthy lifestyle” running everyday, eating salad/fruits. But little do you know that she is actually suffering from anorexia.
Character building  – Sarah filled her room with pictures of her idols (skinny & beautiful). she is always alone and since she hate social interaction she stay in her room most of the time. In order to avoid bumping into people, Sarah only goes out early in the morning and very late at night. She is always checking on herself, be it selfie camera, mirror or weighing machine.
A girl without eating disorder
Hui Xin is Sarah’s room mate and unlike Sarah she doesn’t care about her weight she eats and snacks on food as day goes by. She interact with the outside world a lot more as compared to Sarah. Hui Xin is basically a foodie she love food and her favorite shows is competitive eating videos.
Character building – Hui Xin table’s is full of food and snacks, she love human interaction hence she is always out and about and hardly in her room.

SOUND EDITING

Sound editing is really hard and here are some of the reference I found online

Hwee Ann send me this , thanks girl !

Even hugh Jackmen does it kiss

Its really hard to think of a sound that could make the entire story stand out more then ever.
We tried to record most of the dialogue on site so that it is easier to sync later.

Sound effect – All non-living things make sound

Some of the sound that I have record are the sound of a unlock iphone, morning alarm, camera shutter, phone ringing, doors, keys, switch, weighing machine, cabinet, apple bites, vomiting, potato chip

Sounds connects ideas

1. Chipping back ground sound – morning
The film started in the morning hence I woke up bright and early to get the sound of bird chipping and lucky me! My neighbor at the second floor own a number of birds. Tadaaa god bless me 🙂 . Inorder not to over powered the entire film I Write the sound in the flow that its not to abrupt also remember to lower the volume down.

2. Fast foot steps & breathing sound – Jogging / exhausted
The foot steps is recorded on the tracks, keeping in mind that different flooring give off different sound. Having the foots step on loop and fast forwards makes the sound seem like she is runing on the tracks. The breathing sounds also contribute to the fact that she is really exhausted.

3. Clock ticking – counting/ frustration
I added a ticking sound at the background whenever she get frustrated about how she look or when he is not confident. I feel that ticking sound reminds her that she have to keep track of her self. And its time to do her work out and the ticking get faster when she is losing herself. And the ticking sound only stop when she starts to workout.  The clicking sound is make by hitting two fork against each other.

4. Ambiance sound
I personally felt that ambiance sound is really important, without it the video sounds really fake. For the library, the sound was recorded in the library for a few minute then I went home to edit it. I didn’t include any sound effect or music along with it as I felt that Hui Xin is a really peaceful person. And I tried to portrait that by not adding anything to complicate it. If not I would have added her voice over thought on the video.

5. Victoria secret video
I played the video while recording the sound coming from the laptop, I wanted the sound to have echo and sound grainy if not I would have downloaded the music online. I also changed the EQ via premium pro for this audio.

6. Heart beat – basketball

Towards the end of the video, Sarah is feeling really dizzy and exhausted. I wanted to portrait that using sound, firstly her heart would be beating so loudly she could probably hear it. I recorded it by hitting my hands against my brother basketball. Then again added effect to the sound via premium pro.

6. Metal sound – feeling dizzy
Secondly, to enchance the mode in the end of the film.  I decided to use a metal soup and by rubbing it against a metal pot it give out that sound (I really dk how to describe it). After that I went to premium pro and use EQ  to edit the properties.

For the final touch, I added the same music I used for the first thin – think film so that there’s a continuous element to my series. Yay thats about it, the final video is down below! please watch and hear out for all the sound that I have mentioned above !
