FYP – Sem 2 – Week 7

How is Application different from Carousell?

Concept
Why Sharing?
Borrowing from neighbors was once a commonplace practice, part of the web of relations we once had with those who lived within close range.

Sharing is being break down into 2 section – Food and Tools.
Why Food? Food is a more universal items among human.  Food is more than a substance, it can be use to represent community.
Why Tools? Most items we own are used less than once a month. So why buy when we can Share?

Upon registration, Users will be added into his/ her block community.

Share Credit – Replace money with share credit.
How it work?  For every items listed successfully shared with others, owner receive 1 share credit whereby it can be used to request for other items shared by other owner. So, this encourage and motivate people to share their items as they need the share credit to request for items.

For a successful help on block ‘notice board’, neighbour get 2 share credit.  ( Is more time consuming )

Every Sign up starts with 5 share credit.

Motivate to share and meet neighbours because it not only help save money, but also help to build the bond between neighbours (main reason).

Additional to Foods and Tools, Users can share their service on their block ‘notice board’
Neighbours that are of the same block will receive notification of request and people might reply with help or suggestion on people that could help.

Character Introduction for Sharing Video

KamShare acts as a stepping stone to get users to interact with their neighbors, get to know each other more and improve the trust between neighbors.

Block 175A is a new HDB built in the 2017s. Sophia, Noah, Adeline and James just moved into their house for a few months and have not interact with any neighbors because they are always busy with work and almost everyone in the block choose to keep their door closed.

Sophia lived with her husband, and they don’t cook often.

However, today, Sophia decided to cook and she need 2 tomato. When she visit the grocery store, she realized that they only sell tomato in a bag of 6. So, she have no choice but to get the bag of tomato even though she only need 2.

Noah lived with his wife but they are always busy at work and have no time for grocery shopping so they tend to buy their grocery online.

Today, Noah only want to get 4 tomato.

With Kamshare, Sophia can put the extra tomato that she bought up for sharing at a small amount of price and noah can then purchase and collect it on his way back home from work.

This sharing, allow sophia and noah to know of each other as neighbors and give them time for a small chat.

Adeline is a stay home mom who loved to cook but she always tends to cook too much and result in a waste of food.

James is living alone and have been eating out.

With KamShare, Adeline can Share her home cook food and James can request and collect it after work. Adeline and James then have a chance to communicate over meal or when they meet for sharing.

Interaction Between Neighbours

Mobile Application

Interact online (Virtual) – Meet offline (Physical)Search by location, Block on map. Prioritise proximity over categorization

Price are set relatively low because users that use the application to share, are users that are willing to share and build connection with neighbours , not to earn money.

Profile include trade, skills (Reference to kampong people normally are aware of each other trade and will approach them when needed)
Notice board allow users to post request and share news to everyone.

Comment By friends after testing out of application
Instead of dropping off @void deck  why not place at Doorstep. Kampong also did it that way.
Interaction between people is lower when there is an drop off option. so why not remove it? No drop off means people need to meet.
Motivation to share is when they download the application, they are willing to know their neighbours hence they will share. ( i won’t download apps that i don’t use right)
Interesting idea, willing to try
How to pay money? Cash? Card? Credit?
Is great because at least i get to know who are my neighbours although i might not know them well.

Event Launch (campaign)
– To aid neighbours to download and use the app
– Introduce the chief head of the block
Booth, Banner @void deck

2 Feb Comment
Sharing is a good idea but there is still a lack of communication between neighbour when neighbours use the apps and hook.
Relook into how to increase the interaction between neighbours?
People selling instead of using hook?
Presentation skills need to improve. Presentation is misleading people that i am designing hook when hook is just a additional items.
Why not just leave shared item outside house when unable to meet?
How can the neighbour meet more directly?

Ideas for Final presentation
Present background research of concept – Animated video, Website
Present Concept using apps – Adobe XD
Show video of users using apps and interaction – Video recording

A Campaign design to distribute Bag with hook to neighbourhood.

Video can be back up with some evidence of real event
Generate more concept of how the apps work. Make it simpler and easier to use.

FYP – Semester Break 1

Concept Development: Instead of building a kiosk, going for a softer approach. Building hock for people to leave their sharing items at instead of creating a kiosk so to encourage them to meet but under unforeseen situation, they can still leave their sharing item at the hock.

Hock is design to be alike kampong houses.

Phone Apps is also used to allow users to share at their own conveience.
They can share Meals, Ingredient, Fruits and any other items.

(APPS IMAGE)

To start promoting the Apps and sharing, i also want to created a campaign to allow people to know of this Sharing. Campaign include, Poster, Mailer and a recyclable bag(can be use for K.share).

Matching Dreamers: Neighbourly

We don't talk to our neighbours anymore like we used to do. So this lady came up with an idea to get us interacting again.

Posted by Mothership.sg on Friday, 8 December 2017

Comment
Show how a bag is hock onto the hock
Hock is an simple idea, why make it complicated by having such abstract design.
More way to hock and who is it for.
Motivation for people to share, how to convince  people to share? Who is uncharge of this sharing.

Consider what the residents needs and what they want.
How is it implement?
Having apps, storyboard, video might help to present idea concept better.

Fyp – Sem 1 – Week 13 – Presentation 2

Comment From Presentation
Concept 1
Explode how to make a softer look. (maybe a small locker/ hock)
Kiosk might not need a display screen, as user can just use their phone.

Concept is to design to allow people to interact, but designing an apps might revert people from interacting as people might tend to use the apps and collect from kiosk hence not meeting neighbours.
Is there another way to allow people to meet? Help collect package?

Concept 2
Can show Everything store in shelf vs everything out of shelf.

Concept 3
Not really related to concept
Noise creation
A monthly event so might not be the a solution

FYP – Sem 1 – Week 12

Concept 2 – Development

Based on retirement kampong = Design Space for people to interact.
Kampong spirit – Sharing, Know your neighbours, Trust

Problem:
New HDB areas has almost no void deck (replace with shared pavilion)
Void deck used for parking bicycle, Childcare center, Elderly center.
When one person are seated at the chair at void deck, although other seat are empty, other people tend to not seat together.

Objective:

  • Allow residences to gather and organize event to bring community together (learn from neighbors skills)
  • Use void deck as an interaction space
  • People visit to study alone
  • Meet friend for chat
  • Family Bonding
  • Daily newspaper
  • Social with people

Inspire by The Shelf by Orla Reynolds

My concept shelf can store 2 Bench, 4 Table and 6 Chairs.

Shelf is designed with food and drinks vending machines, Games and books corner, and a rotatable notices board that allow residents to post or write any events or help they need.

Furniture are kept in the shelf when not in use to free out space in the void deck for other use.

Table are also designed in such whereby when someone is studying and do not wish to be disturb, they can retrieve a study sign and insert it onto the table and when others see that, they won’t disturb them. If they welcome people to social with them, they can put up the social sign which welcome people to communicate with them. In this way, people can visit the place for self study without people disturbing or for social.

Concept 3

Giving Old object a second Life

Using the void deck space, Volunteer bring along the tools and encourage residences instead of throwing away the item, they can give the object a second life together.

Problem: A lot of waste are created. But items might just be of small defect and they change the items because they don’t have a proper tools to fixed it and sometimes getting the tools is more expensive than buying a new items.

How does it work: People bring the old object that they want to give it a new life and together with a group of volunteer, they will convert them into item with good uses or fix it.

With this workshop, residences get to know their neighbours, they get to share items, tools and hence build up trust in each others.

Void decks remain a vital slice of HDB life
Designed to be “large flexible community spaces”
But even as void decks became an integral part of public housing, the evolving design of HDB blocks has threatened their traditional existence. While older, slab blocks meant more space on the ground floor, newer and taller blocks now spell shrunken void decks.

The Housing Board told The Straits Times that the shift in block design caters to “residents’ preference for greater privacy”, and that precinct pavilions were introduced to supplement void decks.

Wong Cheet Kiat, 83 said” having a void deck also means having friends”.

Filling a void deck with neighbourliness
In Parliament last month, Jurong GRC MP Tan Wu Meng urged the Government to study if newer estates will have enough common spaces for “unstructured, informal interaction”. This, he said, can “make the difference between a place of transit and a place of friendship and fellowship”.

Ms Wee, 69, said: “Some people take practically everything, they carry loads away. But no one can stop them… You can’t tell if they are needy.”

Mr Baey is optimistic. Noting that a structured programme, such as one involving coupons, might deter people from helping themselves to the food, he added: “This project was developed with the belief that there are many kind-hearted people around… We can live with the several black sheep.”

FYP – Sem 1 – Week 11

Conclusion from Hall testing

1 week – 2 People sharing but no people buying.
Comment from those who share: Good idea to share, they like it.

Concept 1
Apps & Kiosk design
User share via apps & place item @ kiosk to deal/ place food @kiosk to share

Concept 2
Void deck space
User can convert furniture into multi use

Reason to go?
Reason to stay?
Safe & comfortable?
Welcoming & accessible?

Toys, board game can be donated by residences.

Comment After Consultation
Issue of hall, might also happen in HDB. How do they get the knowledge to share?
Eg.Yishun people sharing food nowadays, but how do people know about it.
Can consider doing a community alike programs like – Repair kopitiam, Basecamp cafe.
The use of void deck as a space for online programs might be possible too.
Concept 2 must be more elaborate. is it community base? Overall layout use 2D
Provide more than 3 design concept.

Book : Design, when everyone design.
