Tittle: Wings of Hope

Knowing that Ng Teng Feng hospital is design to give patient the benefit (perk) of having outdoor view of nature, so I want to keep that aspect hence I decided to create artwork that doesn’t block the entire window. So working towards the aspect of nature, I will use flowers & cloud & environment. Knowing the environment of hospital, as people walk pass the bridge, whether or not if they are patient, everyone has their own problem and trouble. So I want to create this artwork to cheer them, give them hope hence I decided to use Dove bird, a representation of hope. I also choose the flowers that all represent hope. They are blue cornflower, cherry blossom, cornflower, Iris, Red chrysanthemums and Snowdrops.

My idea is to create a dove using flowers, alike to the adults coloring book because, it is therapeutic to people whom view it. My idea is to do a decal leaving the wash background translucent with only the dove and heart opaque. Knowing that the background is slightly noisy, I use bold outline to bring out my graphic. The cloud wash also helps reduce the noise. The rational to leave the decal transparent and translucent because when the dove fly and flap its wing, hearts are falling to symbolize that the dove is sending hope to people.

As this work will be place on the window panel, when people travel on the travelator, they get to see that the bird flying and blessing the world with hope. As people move, they will get to see different background too.

Comment:

Graphic is too static. No movement feel.

Maybe can alternate the graphic from with alternate window of each side.

Do not use the word therapeutic colors- what that is therapeutic to me might not be therapeutic to others.

Dove and flower is good but swash and heart are stealing the graphic and causing it to be too static. Hearts can come in later, not in all series. swash should vary and give a sense of movement since the bird is flying.

Hearts maybe can be replace? Flower pedal might be better. Or Maybe can intro at perk only. Not all panel.

Can have wash with big to small, converging to bring attention to the Dove.

Project 1 – Color Exploration

After the first presentation on my ideas, I continue working on the aspect of HOPE.

Representation of Hope: Candles light, Dove, Growing trees, Butterfly

Flowers that symbolize hope:

Red chrysanthemums

Iris

Blue cornflower

Fruiting Blossom

Snowdrops

So I extract the outline of the flowers and use this flower to form dove. My idea is to have a sequence of dove from standing to flying. So when people move on the travelator, they will be able to look at the movement of dove as they move on the travelator.

The colors I use are all cheerful, bright colors.

Purple/ Violet = energy, strength of red with the spirituality and integrity of blue.

Red = warm and positive color, energizing, strong-willed and give confidence

Blue = depth and stability, calming effect

Yellow = uplifting and illuminating, offering hope, happiness, cheerfulness and fun.

Pink = compassion, nurturing, love, feminine and romantic, affectionate and intimate, thoughtful and caring.

Green = life, renewal, nature, and renews and restores energy

Name of tittle?

Form of dove need to be more clear.

Background might be too noisy, unable to see the dove.

Fewer color, thicker outline , less detail, reduce the complexity of body

Unable to recognize standing dove. Flying is better, can begin with flying dove.

Site Observation:

The window of glass panel that we will be working on have bars going horizontally across, allowing some sunlight in.
Viewers standing at the right will tend to stay on the travelator for 60 min. (Further from artwork) On left, they will walk at fast speed (nearer to artwork) those standing on the travelator will get block when viewing the artwork as people walk pass at fast speed. Travelator total travel timing would be 60 minutes, giving each window panel about 2-5seconds of glancing time.
Exterior: Shopping mall, Roads on both side.
Direction A: Toward tower A, Visiting Clinic patient, Getting refreshment, Shoppers to J-walk, IMM, Institution student.
Direction B: Toward tower B & C, Emergency department, Visitor of patient in ward, Discharge patient to collect medicines, Shoppers to Big box, JEM, MRT.
My view on this Linkway is that it allows people to walk from mall to mall or hospital building to building. The space is simple and dull. Although we get to see some view outside, it is still partially blocked by the bar. Or even as you are standing on the left of the escalator, people are walking pass at a fast speed that block the view of outside. So i would like my design to be able to convey the message over to the viewer in a few seconds.
Boring, tend to walk pass it in fast speed. Connect them from malls to malls. A path they will take as it is fully aircon.

MindMap

Base on my observation, I done up mindmap. First I start from the 5 sense. How I can relate therapeutic to our 5 sense then I continue on what ideas I have for the hospital then I decide on the visual I can use. So those is circles are points that I would like to focus on.

I decided to focus on the greenary garden because Ng teng Feng Hospital’s was build and design with aspect that they want to let people have a view with greenery outside, more natural lighting. So my idea is all surfacing around nature.

Ideas Sketches

Inspire from the nature and stone art, my first idea is to complement the exterior view outside the window. So leaving the background blank, (Negative space) a tree is on the foreground(Positive space). The tree “leaves” are made out of pebbles stone that are painted and design differently to represent different individuals.

For my second idea, i decided to use the very popular trending coloring pages nowadays and I draw a garden view to complement with the exterior view outside the window. The space will be fully painted. The Quotes/ word will be left blank as negative space. As viewer travel on the travelator, the negative space change as their view change and they will get to see the quotes/ words.

My third idea is also using the natural as background, Words/ quotes can be seen made out of flower. The solid colors of the flower will stand out from the view outside the window. I was also thinking of having this words/ quotes in a series so as people travel pass, they get to view a series of artwork.

Comments after presentation

For Idea 2 – Having the Positive & Negative space might not work as there are possibility that the negative space that will be fill by the view outside of window will be too complicated.
Words may be too literal, can think of alternative.
Using the approach of “Hope”, use representation, element, visualization.
What can represent hope? Birds? How can i combine bird with flower pattern?
