Write-up:

I wanted my final piece to be simple yet meaningful. I hesitated about touching the topic of “finals” as many students may have the same idea for their composition as it is what pretty much everyone is thinking of. There was one time my friends and I were joking around about what if we can just “eat” (literally) what we needed to study and absorb all the knowledge in due time with minimal effort? This was pretty much the whole concept of my drawing. I drew myself cooking “First Semester” for breakfast so I can “eat” it. I chose breakfast as it is the most important meal of the day (LOL). I chose to represent the first semester to be an egg as most of us know that the egg is famous for being a breakfast food item. I initially thought of drawing pancakes but it will be too difficult for the observer to see what I was cooking. I thought of drawing it in bird’s-eye-view but it looked very boring. I drew it while rising the horizon line and looking at it diagonally. This way, I am able to draw the shadows as well and show what I have learnt throughout this semester in DA1000.

One of the few things that remind me of home is a bed. That is why I drew my hall bed. It’s not the same as my bed at home but it reminds me of it. For me, when I’m at home, it is where I can let loose, forget everything and just relax.

For the past two to three years, I have been living with my older brother and younger sister. Before, my whole family, including my parents and youngest sister, was in Singapore. This is the first time that my family isn’t together and the only thing that can keep us in contact with each other is through the internet. And so I drew my Wi-Fi router as my own representation of the internet. “Home is where the Wi-Fi is at.”

The two drawings are no where linked to each other. No sketches and final piece. I just drew two separate object which represents home to me. Didn’t really know what Prof Kelly wants prior to this homework. Now I know. Well, now we all know.

Write-up:

I wanted to draw the Singapore river because for me, it is a key element in the development of Singapore. It was a channel used by merchants from different places from Asia and around the world and it has changed ever since. I wanted to show that in my drawing without my drawing being too crowded. I first drew a sketch of a place somewhere near the Singapore river but I felt that there was something missing. I walked around and found a sculpture of five young boys playing around and diving into the river. I thought that it was a perfect addition to my drawing. Not only was the river used by merchants long ago, it was also used by locals like these children to enjoy and have fun. I felt that it is an important part of the river’s history.
