3D Project 2: Dangling on a Thread

I found making a thread sculpture challenging. Getting the needle to punch through the plastic card was painful on the fingers, as was untangling threads and tying tiny knots and maintaining tension. Having little dexterity and experience with sewing, I wanted to do something simple. Planes.

Here are the study models. I made others, but they became piles of loose string shortly after creation.

This was my first foray. While I liked the light purple thread on black card, the parallel edges of the paper weren’t dynamic. I also don’t know why I chose to use two sheets.

What the final should have looked like, had I followed through. The overlapping planes conflicted with each other and the threads weren’t quite dense or taut enough, but I liked the form.

This is what the final looks like. It’s not complete; I’d have added another plane at the back.

…I tried pretty hard, but ended up disappointed.

On further reflection, I should have had a more solid (and interesting) idea for a central form. I was focusing far too much on achieving a high density, but forsook pitch in doing so. I also realised, belatedly, that a natural density would have arisen if I’d just increased the spaces between holes on one side and decreased the spaces on the the other.

Frustration aside, I think I might enjoy trying this out again in future. Armed with a clearer plan and a handful of thimbles, of course.
