3D Project 3: Morphogenic Madness

A couple of weeks back, we were tasked with making a sculpture resembling the geometric structure of a material as seen under the microscope.

I collected a couple of items I thought could serve as a unit: cupcake tins, spin crackers, other wheel-like shapes. But the pineapple slices looked most like the unit and I could get them in bulk. I dried out canned slices in the oven at low heat for seven hours or so per tray. In class, I covered a balloon in newspaper with the intention of popping it after I covered it in overlapping slices with the glue gun.

Making the study model.

I felt it wasn’t really necessary for the sculpture to be hollow (there would still be the newspaper ball, after all) and that I’d be able to make it more spherical with an actual styrofoam sphere. So for my final model, I made this:
