For project one because it’s of A5 format to express the individual settings, i’ll be focusing on the details.
Bringing forward what i experimented in semester one, i’ll will be improvising them to a more expressive
piece.

DADA movements (typography)
DADAists frequently mix fonts employing unorthodox punctuation, printing both horizontally and vertically
on a single sheet, and sprinkling texts with random chosen printers’ symbol.
“Each page must explode, either by deep and weight seriousness—the whirlwind, the vertigo, the new, the eternal
—by the crushing jokes, by the enthusiasm for the principles, or by the manner of being printed.”
Hannah Hoch
DADA Montage
Photomontage and mass media provided endless fodder for the dadaists scathing critiques, and the
disjunctive cuts if photomontage effectively captured the fissures and shocks of modernity.
I think using photomontage not only entice the viewers to look at the final outcome but also the process
and thoughts of how each different piece of the elements are being brought together. Whats make this
interesting is also the usage of different materials, shape and sizes. With the mix of proportion of visuals
or typography, it bolds and clearly shows the DADA movement in it.
Russian Constructivists
Alexander Rodchenko and Varvara Stepanova’s famous books. Poster promotes a stark grammar of
simple geometry and flat colour to promote a campaign for worker education.
Constructivism originates in Russia. Russians artists took Cubism to express through the free art, design
and architecture from dependence on traditional forms of representation. This is also a new visual
grammar to allow a combination of primitive shapes to serve as building blocks for the artistic and
architectural worlds.
Personally, i think it is quite similar in terms of the colour scheme and boldness in the chinese cultural
revolution.
civil war
The cultural revolution is a series of campaigns intended to transform China into a truly revolutionary
country. Red Guards destroy anything that is branded ‘old’ and eliminate people considered “rightists”.
Artist statement:
“My latest works further explore the intricate and delicate forms of an imaginary ecosystem, twisting and floating
together in an alluring environment. I attempt to create an ethereal place which is hypnotically familiar and yet
hauntingly exotic, adding tiny little details in a sort of compulsive meditation, until a perfect balance is created.
The intricacy and high detail, along with hints of existing organic shapes lend to the intimacy and believability of
each new world. “
I think the abstract yet down to earth marine inspired environment together with the intricate detailing of
hints of organic shapes seems to bounce, float and drift within this atmosphere. This also suggest the
minuet movement in human life.
What i like about her work is probably the colours used in the composition. She explores with a wildly
flourishing imaginary ecosystem, with stylised flowers which explodes at every corner. The dominant
colour is electric blue while the orange as a opposite colour clashes which appears to be more intense

Sugar was dissolved in heated water to create a sugar syrup, which was then poured onto a sheet of
glass. As the syrup was cooling and setting, black food dye was ‘tattooed’ below the surface with the tip of
a cocktail stick.
The lyrics used are from ‘Pyramid Song’ by Radiohead.
Type was cut from printer paper and mounted onto jet black Canford paper. Glow sticks were activated,
then cut with scissors. The liquid was then flicked onto both papers, which each reacted differently to the
liquid. The White paper glowed, while the black paper absorbed the light. The results were then
photographed.
Lyrics are from “This Night Has Opened My Eyes” by The Smiths.
Black material was stretched over a hand made wooden frame. A stencil was made and
household bleach was applied with a toothpick to reveal the red colour.
Fairy lights were put inside the frame, then black acrylic paint was applied to the material to
block out some of the light.
The lyrics used are from “I See A Darkness” by Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy.
A sheet of glass was raised above printed song lyrics. Cooking oil was dripped onto the glass
to magnify certain areas and a light source was moved to different positions.
Lyrics used are from: My Delirium by Ladyhawke, Ingenue by Atoms for Peace and If I was
Your Girlfriend by Prince.

What i like about her is that she uses settings and of course the creativity in her to create this typography.

What i like about her is that her works are really experimental and also gives a wow factor!
Artist statement:
My work is extremely process driven. There are elements based on probability
and chance, as well as ones that incorporate exceedingly planned out details.
Often I use dice as a way of determining which colors to use, while other times I
will draw a thousand tiny bricks by hand. Combining these methods creates an
organic rhythm that could not exist if I were making all of the choices solely on
my own accord.
