Identity 1 – Space Prom

Space Prom

This 4-page photo spread celebrates the outfits of a space-themed prom. The spread consists of two outfits I’ve put together to create a futuristic take on fancy (featuring the talented Lisa of course). I was really inspired by futuristic themed photoshoots, and since I had a couple of metallic blue dresses lying around at home, I thought it would be cool if I added my own little twist to the traditional fancy prom aesthetic with a futuristic element.

Baron Adolph de Meyer

de Meyer was well known for specialising in pictorialism during his golden years in photography. I was most drawn to how well he brought out the aesthetics through his photographs. While the poses remain simple, the set design and costumes were extravagant and well thought out.

Cecil Beaton

Unlike de Meyer, the models in Beaton’s photographs were posed in more elaborate poses that brought out the aesthetics of the photographs better. Beaton was very well known for merging theatre with photography and giving his photographs a cinematic touch. He also focused a lot on the mise-en-scene of the photographs, and I admire how well thought the costumes and set designs are as well.

Erwin Blumenfeld

Blumenfeld was most well known for his avant-garde style of photography, but what I was most drawn to was how he “edited” his photograph works. He liked to mix fine arts with photography, hence resulting in his photos looking like “graphic composites”. I was definitely inspired by how he manipulated his images and how he made use of colour in his compositions.
