Assignment 1: Lego Manual

Forming the piece

These were among the looks that I played with for my Lego pieces. I am a fan of using primary colours in my work and knew I was going in that direction. Of the pieces, specifically what caught my attention was the ‘top half body piece’. So I built my model around that piece, but I did not want it to look like your typical robot. I also found the bottom leg piece and laughed for about a minute after placing the legs at the bottom of the piece so I left it there.

Drawing & Sketching

These are my final sketches, with me knowing I was not the best at drawing circles or round shapes so I tried to minimise my mistakes by drawing one of each ’rounded’ item so I could just duplicate in Photoshop. After minor touching up, the final pieces look like this:

Design of Manual

I did some researches as to how designers did their layout for lego manuals and noticed that it was laid out quite straightforward and numbered simply like this.

  1. Raw Drawings/Photoshop drawings
    – A fair set of raw drawings. The arch however could have been improved. The touched-up photoshoped drawings were cleaned up well.
    Manual/Presentation
    – A very clear and simple step-by-step instruction. Well done.
