DoW IOT: Smart Mirrors

A device that I have always been intrigued by is a Smart Mirror. For a previous module I took, Programming for Interaction, I looked more into making my very own smart mirror using IOT. It was something that looks sleek, subtle and high-tech.

About Smart Mirrors

A smart mirror is built by using a two-way mirror placed on top of an electronic display that can be coded to suit your needs and show the information that you require. Depending on how you code it, either from an open source site or including your own APIs, it can display content ranging from the basics like time, weather and traffic updates, to more personalised stuff like tweets from your favourite accounts etc.

Pros

  • easily customisable, you may even connect it to control lights or audio in your bedroom
  • one stop quick updates that you need for the day
  • serves as both a mirror or a screen

Cons

  • most smart mirrors are bulky and heavy due to their monitor and the need for electricity, they are not very portable
  • this limits their use to about once or twice a day (or whenever you look at the mirror), and it does not allow for the user to access it at any other times of the day
