Abstract

Ensemble no.1 is an interpretation of pop music production where repetitiveness and catchy doo-whop beats are characteristic of chart topping tunes. These songs are all created through different processes that can be challenging for both the musicians and producers involved, but also can result in similar sounding melodies that can sound rather simple.

These creative processes are thus reimagined in the form of a Rube Goldberg machine, which is a machine purposely designed to perform a simple task in an indirect and overcomplicated fashion. The parts of the machine are inspired by motifs that have appeared across pop culture such as swimming pools, candy, alcohol, tropical fruits, pizza and ice cream. These represent the feel-good, optimistic and party energy of the genre.
