2D II Assignment 2: Point of View – Research (1)

Initial Ideas…

As we have seen my key interest in the area of Spirituality from my past projects, I do feel like keeping up with that topic for this assignment as well.

Spirituality on its own has many facets to it. Scholars and philosophers engage in endless studies on the complexity of spirituality and religion. Thus, I feel like there is so much more that I can explore by further delving into this topic that interests me the most.

The first word I chose to brainstorm 18 possible ideas was:

GOD

Artist Reference
Giuseppe Arcimboldo

Giuseppe_Arcimboldo

The main object of modern art critics interpretation are “curious” paintings of Arcimboldo. According to V. Krigeskort, these works are absolutely unique. Attempts of interpretation begin with judgment of a cultural background and philosophy of the artist, however a consensus in this respect is not developed. B. Geyger who for the first time raised these questions relied mainly on judgments of contemporaries — Lomazzo, Komanini and Moridzhia who used the terms scherzi, grilli and capricci (respectively, “jokes”, “whims”, “caprices”). Actually, Geyger’s monograph is entitled: “Comic pictures of Giuseppe Arcimboldo”. B. Geyger considered works of the artist as inversion, when the ugliness seems in beauty, or on the contrary as the disgrace exceeds the beauty, entertaining the regal customer. The similar point of view was stated by R. Barthes, but he reduced works of the artist to the theory of language, believing that fundamentals of art philosophy of Arcimboldo is linguistic, because without creating new signs, he confused them, mixed, combined, that is played a role of the innovator of language.

Arcimboldo speaks double language, at the same time obvious and obfuscatory; he creates “mumbling” and “gibberish”, but these inventions remain quite rational. Generally, the only whim (bizarrerie) which isn’t afforded by Arcimboldo — he doesn’t create language absolutely unclear … his art not madly.(Source: Wikipedia)

2D II Assignment 1: Typographic Portrait-Final Compositions (3)

The final compositions for this project are finally here! 🙂

After considering the final compositions from the various sketches I did, execution was the next step. There were quite a few mediums which I had used for this assignment, such as colour pencil, stained glass paint, polymer clay, acrylic paint and so on. As always, I am highly concerned about the final outcome in terms of aesthetics and it must also serve the purpose of having a meaning.

My name is (VIMAL), and I am a Dravidian(South Indian).

12729383_10153878049163449_4522042649297533027_n (2)

In this composition I have used Tamil fonts which is my mother tongue and Tamil is of course a South Indian language originating from Tamil Nadu, India. My ancestors are from there and as such my roots are from the Dravidians. The motifs and figures in this composition are inspired by the Dravidian temple architecture styles.  This can be observed in the use of the intricate designs and vibrant colours.

My name is (VIMAL), and I am a Spiritualist.

12729185_10153878049478449_7789215157186732936_n

In this compostion, my name is written in sanskrit. I chose sanskrit to write my name as I felt that sanskrit being a language used in Hindu and some Buddhist scriptures, represents my spirituality. Furthermore, I was inspired by the rose window of ancient churches which gives a feel of spirituality to the churches. The effect is felt when the sun’s rays pass through the stained glass panels. So both of these eastern n western elements are combined to create this composition. I feel that in such an interesting mix, it speaks well of my spirituality which consists of various philosophical studies from both eastern religions and abrahamic religions.

My name is (VIMAL), and I am pure.

12729350_10153878049338449_306567075984461730_n

My name means ‘PURE’ in sanskrit. The idea of purity is represented by the pure water droplets that roll on the waterproof surface of the lotus pads. There is however, a lotus seed pod used to contain one of the alphabet of my name. The lotus seed pod is disturbing for someone who is trypophobic to see. The fact that none of us are truly pure or perfect, is represented in this composition, with the slight indication of the impurity(feeling of disgust) through the lotus seed pod.

My name is (VIMAL), and I am expressive.

12745823_10153878049268449_6303161933728679824_n The usage of mudras(hand gestures) is common in Hindu and Buddhist art. These hand gestures are used to express an emotion, idea or even objects at times. Such form of expression is used to create typography here in this compostion and also indicate my expressive nature as a person. This particular piece was treated with a few layers of paints to give a gold leaf patina effect, that will be reminiscent of ancient bronze sculptures and panels.

2D II Assignment 1: Typographic Portrait-Spirituality.. Its Back! (2)

The Finalising of the 4 typographic portraits:

After trying out different styles of typographic representations of my name according to the contexts that best fit me, I have selected the following four to expand on as the final composition:

The walk of spirituality…

In this project I did not intentionally push the direction towards spiritual art. However, just as how Spirituality and my interest in Faith and Religion in Art makes up a big part of me, this project naturally took it path in that direction. As such, I did not restrict that natural flow. An artist may delve on his area of interest, and at the same time develop it in various ways to express creativity. This project is doing exactly that for me.

I was looking at various typographic art for this assignments, and as much as there were those who inspired me, in this project, my thirst to make extremely unique pieces of typographic art has brought me further away from referencing other artists. Typographic styles are in abundance all over the net and my key intention is to keep my idea as fresh and new as possible.

Some of my other earlier ideas:
