Mother’s love is great. From pregnancy to the giving birth to raising child, it is not a simple task at all.

The blue blanket gives off a feel of serenity and security as the child lies on his mother’s chest.

Nightscape

#1 Painting

This painting consists of a mixture of warm and cool colours but with more cooler tones.

The blue tones at the sides and diverging into brighter green and yellow occupying most part of the painting, which provides a sense of serenity.

The light source in the middle emphasizes itself with its brightness, magnifying its rays to its surroundings. It would seems that the source of light has lightened up the entire space similarly to the sun is our Earth’s natural light source.

I did another study with architecture in contrast to the first study of nature.

As it was taken in the night, the buildings are just seen as black. However, there are cool and warm  lights seen from the window, creating an obvious contrast rather than a gradient of colour change.

The colours created eye direction. Having the yellows in the middle catches the attention of viewer and the eyes are directed to the tree for the minimal yellow and brighter green. Then to the blues and mixes of whites at the bottom and to the grey windows on the left and gradually to the sky which is of a dark warm colour.

I made use of the pins to emphasise on the trees and the light shining out of the tree.

And also the clouds to create a 3D effect as we may not be able to capture a scenery as what we see with our naked eyes,

During the Japanese Occupation, the locals were caught and tortured in ways we could imagine. This painting had created the eye direction with the men caught as they bends towards the left. The soldier raising his weapons and the blood streaks on the man made us squirm at the thought of being forced and attacked. Looking on the right side of the painting, the old man and the man in glasses which signifies a scholar were held captive as well. Using grey for the sky, it depicts the dark times back then.

Yes this painting had shown us the torturing days during the Occupation.

Singapore had went through a lot of changes. From the Japanese Occupation to the development of Singapore. When Singapore was developing to an urban city, the  kampung and farms were slowly claimed back by the government for buildings.

This painting had shown how agriculture was the livelihood in the past. The man pointing to the back created the eye direction to the back where shadows of high buildings and the tractors are. Coming back to the boy, it is intuitively thought that the boy will be living in a city with those high buildings, not needing to farm, living a better quality of life.

The strokes used on the lino cuts had defined rustic of the place. The trees are thin and do not have any leaves.

The directions of those lines of the sky created tension, depicting a tough time to develop a place with all those woods without any machines to ease the labor work.

The strokes in the lower half of the frame created eye directions.

The artist also created eye direction in a clockwise direction with the darker shades.
