Syllabus

Description

Photography is a means of creating or capturing an image. The camera is a tool for artists just like a paintbrush or a chisel. In this class you will sharpen your way of seeing and challenge your creative process to make images that reflect your own personal worldview and aesthetic. An emphasis will be placed on helping you to use and deepen your creative vision as well as to understand both the visual and written language of creative photography and contemporary art. We will work with a standard 35mm camera and black and white materials.

Requirements

Expect to shoot 15-20 rolls

Expect to produce 15 images for a final portfolio with an artist’s statement

Required text: London and Stone A Short Course in Photography on reserve

For Inspiration and to make a Presentation:
Visit the library regularly to find a new photographer each time as a source inspiration. Make a Xerox of one of their images, in your journal analyze their way of seeing, and write a paragraph why this photographer is important.

There will be a minimum of 10 different artists and paragraphs , 5 pre- mid term and 5 pre-final.

In addition, choose one of these artists for a short (10 minute)presentation in relation to your final portfolio project. Use visual examples of one photographer who works mainly in black and white of your choice and his or her specific concepts in class. Hopefully you will choose a photographer who is a source of inspiration for your final project.

Building and Lab Hours:

-You can expect to spend  AT LEAST 3 blocks of time in the lab and one half day making photographs  or 10 hours in addition to 3 hours of class time.

You can expect to spend at least $300 on film and paper.

General Hints:

The first half of Photo 1 is very technical because you’re learning new techniques such as camera handling (f/stops, shutter speeds, focusing), processing (negative developing), and printing (enlarger use and chemical processing). By the second half of the semester you’ll be applying what you’ve learned in the first half to manifesting works of art from images that have the power to transform us. In order to learn these skills, you have a right to make mistakes, Without them, you’ll never completely learn the technical processes, so expect them and take them in stride.

Attendance is expected at every class unless noted; assignments must engage the course organization and be completed on time. Art (assignment) Critiques are taken very seriously and are the heart of art training. An assignment not ready for its scheduled class Critique will result in an F unless prearranged with the professor as will an absence on that day.

Absent students should contact other class members for a review of what was missed. In Photo 1, it is critical to keep abreast of the first month of technical demonstrations or you will fall way behind. I cannot repeat a missed class for you in person or by email. A class e-list will be provided asap for you to contact other class members to meet you during their lab times to review.

Darkroom Etiquette

Art viewing and making is a collective activity. Help each other. There’s so much to learn and to keep track of with photography, you will succeed in this class far more creatively if you help your classmates as well. Keep the lab clean.

We will have a private meeting during Mid Terms to discuss your overall performance and grades. There will be a Mid term technical exam. No work will be accepted after the final portfolio review of November  9th and/or 16th.

Grading Policy

As this is an art class, the most elusive variable-creativity-will determine your grade. Only approximately 30% of you will get an A. If you do everything required of this class you will make a C. If you do the above and then begin to develop a creative point of view, if you develop a thread from one image to the next, then you will make a B. If you do the above and begin to function as an artist for this class by: figuring out the questions you want to ask with your photographs, by setting goals that go beyond assignments, and by looking into the medium of photography and the field of contemporary art to explore others art and to let it challenge you, then, you will make an A!!!

50%    Final Portfolio including Artist Statement and other written   assignments

20%    Midterm Portfolio including exam

30%    Class Participation
