4D: Project 1A

Hello Internet innocent

The class’s very first project of the Semester was to explore on techniques to create a message from our images which are, Add, Subtract, Substitute and to Superimpose. So here they are…

1 Addition - A5Add

For the first piece, I wanted to create a conversation about today’s excitement and appeal for Pokemon Go. I wanted to create an image that wasn’t necessarily biased to any sides but to depict that Pokemon Go is treated like a usual daily situation and the way these people are fascinated about the game.

I leave it to everyone’s opinions about whether the game is a danger to society or just a game.

2 Subtraction - A5Subtract

This was meant to depict the magazine or fashion industry’s unrealistic expectation of women’s beauty. I was inspired from the many documentaries of that even the girl on the cover doesn’t look like herself.

So, I wanted to advocate the drastic cuts is done for magazine covers just for the sake of society’s depiction of perfection or beauty when really, even the model doesn’t look like that.

3 Substitution - A5

Substitute

Another piece set to depict fashion magazine industry, especially on vogue, whereby I asked myself a question one time, “Where are the inspirational and powerful woman I need to see on covers?

Women on covers not only who are actors, reality TV stars, entrepreneurs, models or singers but also authentic, confident, independent, and inspirational individuals. And such icons that came to mind was Frida Kahlo -whom in this piece had replaced the talk in the model industry, Gigi Hadid.

4 Superimpose - A5

Superimpose

This was meant to superimpose the way culture and society’s perception has been changed over the centuries. The way that pop culture has transcended the message that God isn’t white skin which raises the question of how does God really look like?

Also, this image was meant to entertain as I wanted to put together what is relatable and funny. The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo was used as a meme recently in Tumblr, and Morgan Freeman was recently brought up on Tumblr text posts, therefore this image hahahaha

Thoughts on this project?

Well, I really enjoyed the freedom of speech I was able to make in these images and the ability that I could photo manipulate the original image’s purpose to another and start it into stir another conversation. In this way, I found a new love in using photos to recreate a message towards a certain audience that deals with today’s society.

The only challenge I faced was trying to find the right image that could show what I wanted in mind accurately, however, sometimes a better image would pop up somewhere and I would improvise from there.

What I’ve gained from this project? I’d say it would be appreciating the creativity and the seeing the perspectives of my classmates’ on how they went along with this project. I learnt more about how they collaged manually, the way the altered the images and their perspective about their message behind the image making me more open minded cool
